Teaching Philosophy 34:3, September 2011 241 The Transition from Studying Philosophy to Doing Philosophy JOHN RUDISILL The College of Wooster Abstract: In this paper I articulate a minimal conception of the idea of doing philosophy that informs a curriculum and pedagogy for producing students who are capable of engaging in philosophical activity and not just competent with a specific domain of knowledge. The paper then relates, by way of back- ground, the departmental assessment practices that have played a vital role in the development of my department’s current curriculum and in particular in the design of a junior-year seminar in philosophical research required of all majors. After a brief survey of the learning theory literature that has informed its design, I share the content of this junior-year seminar. In the paper’s conclusion I provide some initial data that indicates our approach to curriculum and pedagogy has had a positive impact on student achievement with respect to reaching the learning goals associated with “doing” as opposed to “merely studying” philosophy. 1. Introduction Capstone projects are common among liberal arts colleges and fre- quently carry an expectation that the final product demonstrates the student’s achievement of becoming a budding biologist, historian, sociologist, philosopher and so on. Even without a formal capstone requirement, I would hope that my philosophy students could—as they finish their undergraduate studies—demonstrate such an achievement. This is because the full set of benefits made available by an education in philosophy includes but extends well beyond knowledge of the history of philosophy and mastery of a philosophical lexicon. -

By this framing, the continuing popularity of stories about paranormal phenomena and supernatural entities – on mainstream television, or in print genres such as urban fantasy and paranormal romance – may seem to be a regressive reaction against the authority of and experience of living in technoscientific modernity. Nevertheless, the boundaries of science fiction, as with any genre, are relational rather than fixed, and critical engagements with Western/Northern technoscientific knowledge and practice and modern human identity and being may be found not just in science fiction “proper,” or in the scholarly field of science and technology studies, but also in the related genres of fantasy and paranormal romance. -

Until this dec- Tade, New Criticism dominated literary theory and criticism, with its insistence that “the” one correct interpretation of a text could be discovered if critical readers follow the prescribed methodology asserted by the New Critics. Positing an autonomous text, New Critics paid little attention to a text’s historical context or to the feelings, beliefs, and ideas of a text’s read- ers. For New Critics, a text’s meaning is inextricably bound to ambiguity, irony, and paradox found within the structure of the text itself. By analyzing the text alone, New Critics believe that an astute critic can identify a text’s central paradox and explain how the text ultimately resolves that paradox while also supporting the text’s overarching theme. Into this seemingly self-assured system of hermeneutics marches philos- opher and literary critic Jacques Derrida along with similar-thinking scholar- critics in the late 1960s. Unlike the New Critics, Derrida, the chief spokesperson for deconstruction, disputes a text’s objective existence. Denying that a text is an autotelic artifact, he challenges the accepted definitions and assump- tions of both the reading and the writing processes. In addition, he insists on questioning what parts not only the text but also the reader and the author play in the interpretive process. -

New York Journal of Sociology, 2008, Vol. 1, pp. 187-206 NY JS POSTMODERNIST GIBBERISH: DERRIDA DUMBFOUNDS THE POSITIVISTS Ben Agger University of Texas Arlington Jacques Derrida (1978), the enfant terrible of Continental philosophy who passed away recently, made many mad: analytical philosophers, positivists in the sciences and social sciences, the right, stupid people generally. That Derrida was brilliant is somewhat beside the point. What is on point is the way he read—texts and indeed the whole western philosophical tradition— aggressively, so much so that we could conclude that Derrida meant that reading is a form of writing. That is one of the main things I take away from his oeuvre. Another is that every text is ‘undecidable,’ that is, it cannot perfectly clarify and ex- haust its topic. This is because every definition needs to be defined, ad infi- nitum. There is no vantage outside of writing from which one can achieve that Archimedean insight about the truth or essence of the world. This rebut- tal of absolutism is extremely maddening to those who pretend apodictic knowledge, especially the gang we sometimes call positivists. To be sure, positivism died within physics by 1905, with Einstein’s first papers on the special theory of relativity. Newton was overthrown, except in the largely American social sciences, where it still prevails, even though there are challengers nibbling at the edges of the mainstream social-science disciplines. Newton only survives in sociology, political science, economics and parts of psychology. It is in these disciplines that Derrida is especially scandalous, although rear-guard actions are also being fought in English by those who dislike ‘the- ory’ and want the great books instead. -

Providing a glimpse into these frontiers, this paper re-introduces the body into theorisations of consumer-technology interaction and reviews interdisciplinary discourses shaping views of the body and technology. The key theoretical discourses of body-machine liminality, control and freedom, embodied interaction, and identity are discussed. These discourses expand conceptualisations of technology beyond a limiting focus on functional benefits, offering new frames and foundations for investigating consumer experience and marketing communications of technology-based offerings. Article Recognition Discourse and Systemic Gender Injustice: An Essay in Honour of Mary-Anne Elizabeth Plaatjies-Van Huffel Robert Vosloo https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7144-9644 Stellenbosch University [email protected] Abstract Against the backdrop of the South African Reformed ecclesiologist Mary-Anne Elizabeth Plaatjies-Van Huffel’s reflections on gender insensitivity in church and society, this article engages with the notion of recognition, a concept that has found strong currency in many contemporary discourses. The first part of the article mentions the promise of recognition as a moral, political, and also theological category. In addition, it also interrogates the term in conversation with theorists who raise some critical concerns regarding accounts of recognition that are not adequately justice-sensitive. The second part of the article enters more directly into conversation with some of the writings of Plaatjies-Van Huffel, highlighting in the process her emphasis that the recognition of women should not be dislocated from a plea for a change in the dynamics of patriarchal power and structural gender injustice.
