A Psychological Approach to Musical Form: The Habituation–Fluency Theory of Repetition David Huron With the possible exception of dance and meditation, there appears to be nothing else in common human experience that is comparable to music in its repetitiveness (Kivy 1993; Ockelford 2005; Margulis 2013). Narrative arti- facts like movies, novels, cartoon strips, stories, and speeches have much less internal repetition. Even poetry is less repetitive than music. Occasionally, architecture can approach music in repeating some elements, but only some- times. There appears to be no visual analog to the sort of trance–inducing music that can engage listeners for hours. Although dance and meditation may be more repetitive than music, dance is rarely performed in the absence of music, and meditation tellingly relies on imagining a repeated sound or mantra (Huron 2006: 267). Repetition can be observed in music from all over the world (Nettl 2005). In much music, a simple “strophic” pattern is evident in which a single phrase or passage is repeated over and over. When sung, it is common for successive repetitions to employ different words, as in the case of strophic verses. However, it is also common to hear the same words used with each repetition. In the Western art–music tradition, internal patterns of repetition are commonly discussed under the rubric of form. Writing in The Oxford Companion to Music, Percy Scholes characterized musical form as “a series of strategies designed to find a successful mean between the opposite extremes of unrelieved repetition and unrelieved alteration” (1977: 289). Scholes’s characterization notwithstanding, musical form entails much more than simply the pattern of repetition. -

The Internet's Premier Classical Music Source BOOK REVIEW The Psychology of Music Diana Deutsch, editor Academic Press, Third Edition, 2013, pp xvii + 765 ISBN-10: 012381460X ISBN-13: 978-0123814609 The psychology of music was first explored in detail in modern times in a book of that name by Carl E. Seashore… Psychology Of Music was published in 1919. Dover's paperback edition of almost 450 pages (ISBN- 10: 0486218511; ISBN-13: 978-0486218519) is still in print from half a century later (1967) and remains a good starting point for those wishing to understand the relationship between our minds and music, chiefly as a series of physical processes. From the last quarter of the twentieth century onwards much research and many theories have changed the models we have of the mind when listening to or playing music. Changes in music itself, of course, have dictated that the nature of human interaction with it has grown. Unsurprisingly, books covering the subject have proliferated too. These range from examinations of how memory affects our experience of music through various forms of mental disabilities, therapies and deviations from "standard" auditory reception, to attempts to explain music appreciation psychologically. Donald Hodges' and David Conrad Sebald's Music in the Human Experience: An Introduction to Music Psychology (ISBN-10: 0415881862; ISBN-13: 978- 0415881869) makes a good introduction to the subject; while Aniruddh Patel's Music, Language, and the Brain (ISBN-10: 0199755302; ISBN-13: 978-0199755301) is a good (and now classic/reference) overview. Oliver Sacks' Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain (ISBN-10: 1400033535; ISBN-13: 978-1400033539) examines specific areas from a clinical perspective. -

Tennant 4 Music and Cognition: Fall 2011 Sabbatical Report Music is an integral part of the human experience, yet it largely omitted from introductory psychology texts (Sloboda & Juslin, 2010). It is not, however, omitted from students' lives. Music accompanies them as they socialize, shop, work, exercise, and worship. Music directs their thoughts and emotions in the films they see and the songs that they hear. How does this occur and what gives music such power? This sabbatical project was designed to better understand the underlying mechanisms of experiencing music and thus apply psychology to one of the passions of students’ lives. -

Shahin Copyrighted by Jianming Shen 2014 Abstract Listeners can perceive interrupted speech as continuous, provided that the gap is masked by another extraneous sound such as white noise or a cough. This phenomenon, known as the continuity illusion or phonemic restoration, is an adaptive function of our auditory system that facilitates speech comprehension in adverse acoustic situations. In this study, we examined the hypothesis that the effect of music training, as manifested in one’s enhanced ability to anticipate envelope variation and thus perceive continuity in degraded music, can transfer to phonemic restoration. We posited that this cross-domain extension is largely due to the overlapping neural networks associated with rhythm processing in the lower-level central auditory system. Musicians and non-musicians listened to physically interrupted short music tunes and English words which contained a segment that was replaced by white noise, and judged whether they heard the stimuli as interrupted or continuous through the noise. Their perceptual threshold of continuity— here defined as the interruption duration at which they perceived the sound as continuous by a 50% chance—for each session was measured and calculated based on an adaptive procedure. Results revealed that musicians tolerated longer interruptions than non-musicians during the speech session, but not during the music session. -

Besides that it is being used in games, movies, shops, restaurants and casinos, many people still consider music listening as a pleasant activity. I am no exception to that. I can hardly imagine a moment during a regular day that I am on my own without listening to music. Everywhere I go, I bring my old-school mp3-player with me. Music enables me to cheer me up or to drag me through difficult moments. Not in the last place it was music that helped me finishing this master thesis. Although I do not master any musical instrument myself, I do consider music to play a major role in my life. This is the reason that I decided to combine my interest for music with my study, Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (PSTS). -

Music and the Transhuman Ear: Ultrasonics, Material Bodies, and the Limits of Sensation “We favor morphological freedom – the right to modify and enhance one’s body, cognition and emotions.” (Transhumanist declaration, 2012)1 “I am apt to think, if we knew what it was to be an angel for one hour, we should return to this world, though it were to sit on the brightest throne in it, with vastly more loathing and reluctance than we would now descend into a loathsome dungeon or sepulchre.” (George Berkeley, 1732)2 PART I The materialist turn When Voyager probes 1 and 2 left the earth’s orbit in 1977, the committee tasked with assembling cultural artifacts followed scientist Lewis Thomas’ advice to include recordings of J. S. Bach among the many musical samples. This, it seems, was the best way to open a conversation with an unknown non-human interlocutor, wherein exchanges may be spaced hundreds of years apart. Many styles and genres were committed to the golden discs, but Thomas worried that by broadcasting Bach, the human race might be guilty of bragging to aliens: “we would be bragging, of course,” he admitted in 1972, “but it is surely excusable to put the best possible face on at the beginning of such an acquaintance.”3 His statement makes telling assumptions. To take one example, the three-voice C-major fugue Glenn Gould recorded (WTC, Book II) matches humans’ ability at auditory streaming, which, as David Huron has shown, tends to max out at around three streams, after which “confusions [over contrapuntal lines] become commonplace.”4 It would seem that part of the effect of Bach’s 1 Various, “Transhumanist Declaration,” The Transhumanist Reader, ed. -
Current Directions in Ecomusicology
Current Directions in Ecomusicology This volume is the first sustained examination of the complex perspectives that comprise ecomusicology—the study of the intersections of music/sound, culture/society, and nature/environment. Twenty-two authors provide a range of theoretical, methodological, and empirical chapters representing disciplines such as anthropology, biology, ecology, environmental studies, ethnomusicology, history, literature, musicology, performance studies, and psychology. They bring their specialized training to bear on interdisciplin- ary topics, both individually and in collaboration. Emerging from the whole is a view of ecomusicology as a field, a place where many disciplines come together. The topics addressed in this volume—contemporary composers and traditional musics, acoustic ecology and politicized soundscapes, mate- rial sustainability and environmental crisis, familiar and unfamiliar sounds, local places and global warming, birds and mice, hearing and listening, bio- music and soundscape ecology, and more—engage with conversations in the various realms of music study as well as in environmental studies and cultural studies. As with any healthy ecosystem, the field of ecomusicol- ogy is dynamic, but this edited collection provides a snapshot of it in a formative period. Each chapter is short, designed to be accessible to the non- specialist, and includes extensive bibliographies; some chapters also provide further materials on a companion website. An introduction and interspersed editorial summaries help guide readers through four current directions— ecological, fieldwork, critical, and textual—in the field of ecomusicology. Aaron S.
