The World Assembly theme was supported by plenary sessions and research-based paper presentations focusing on four topics:(1) redefining inservice and preservice teacher education for a technologically-linked interdependent world;(2) promoting professional qualities of teachers and teacher educators to improve existing knowledge of the personal, organizational, and social factors which influence the career-long learning and development of teachers and teacher educators;(3) improving the quality of teacher education through curriculum development to remodel curricula and prepare teachers and teacher educators for the 21st century with an openness to diversity and the multimedia superhighway; and (4) redefining excellence in education by fostering partnerships between teachers/higher education and business/industry in a global marketplace and involving business/industry and teacher/higher education in collaborative activities for mutual benefit. The report's seven sections include research and analysis by education leaders worldwide; a compilation of keynote and concurrent session papers delivered by Omani education leaders and scholars; academic papers presented during concurrent sessions by international educators; and the World Assembly communique and recommendations. These women create independent spaces, cultural initiatives, public performances and original artworks that allow the reframing of gender roles in neoliberal patriarchal societies today. Beyond labeling the emergence of a new female activism, or femtivism, as feminist or revolutionary, I suggest reading it as the reconfiguration of a new wave of feminisms in Jordan, which engages with the visual arts, the contemporary cultural scene of Amman, the geography of the city and the political commitment, often in informal domains rather than in institutionalized contexts. The analysis of artistic itineraries, performed spaces, collective practices, urban cartographies, personal stories, individual or common artworks form this feminist ethnographical research in which the researcher has engaged, drawing on a postcolonial, postexotic, transnational, intersectional approach.     View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Middlesex University Research Repository Border Crossing Felicity Allen This paper describes a programme I have led on behalf of Tate Britain over the last five years, and sets out some initial thoughts about the impact on it of a range of different, sometimes conflicting, influences and pressures. The programme is Nahnou-Together, which translates from the Arabic as ‘we together’ and, in this context, implies mutual learning. It is a partnership between Tate Britain, the British Council, the Adham Ismail Centre of Plastic Arts in Damascus and Darat-al-Funun, and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Art in Amman, with support from the Jordan Ministry of Education. Although Nahnou-Together was not envisaged as a research project, I want to view it as such, with the benefit of hindsight with which artists regularly describe the unexpected dimensions that shape an initial idea into a larger work of art or exhibition.1 I want to suggest that my management of the programme and production of a display at Tate Britain in 2008 was informed by, and in some ways mirrored, experience from my twenty-five-year career as an artist before I took the role of Head of Learning at Tate Britain in 2003. In this sense, as a manager in a museum, my development of the programme has frequently been as if I were an artist exploring the notion of ‘practice as research’ rather than the more conventional ‘project management’ introduced into the public sector over the equivalent twenty-five-year period as part of New Public Management (commonly known as ‘new managerialism’).2 However, I have viewed it as 1 A recent example: the Lebanese artist Laima Joreige at a public seminar at Tate Britain, March 2009, stated that she did not realise when she started something six years ago it would turn into a major project.

When Islam appeared in the area which these two civilizations were found, it definitely inherited the traditions and gets benefit from these distinctive and flourished civilizations, coexisted and mixed with it. When Umayyad state was developed on 40 AH and Damascus became the capital; people started to get interest on the life of cities, and that clearly seen in the building of sporadic mansions in different cities of the Levant, and they initially bring the most skilled constructors for building there mansions, which characterized by accurate and perfect construction with creativity in the decoration. This qualitative jump – in the life of caliphs – was not arbitrarily, but it occurred due to the economic and political situation of the state in that period.

    Contemporary Algeria: Baya 2/23/21, 1137 AM Baya Baya Mahieddine: An Arab Woman Artist by Sana` Makhoul In 1947, Picasso took the sixteen year old Baya by the hand to his country home at Vallauris to watch her knead the clay and bring to life child-like shapes and figures. (1) Picasso, who stated that he spent his entire life learning how to paint like a child, was fascinated by the art and spontaneity of the Algerian woman artist, Baya Mahieddine. However, later on, in 1954, Algerian women became his exotic subjects in his series, Women of Algiers. I chose to undertake my research on Baya Mahieddine, an Arab woman artist of the twentieth century, for several reasons. Baya was born at Bordj el-Kiffan in Algeria in 1931, to a poor family, and she never attended school. Canonized and conventional professional art making required some formal training. Similarly, class was a vital factor: professional art making was an accepted accomplishment for women from privileged upper-class families, but rarely for those from poorer families, who found it necessary to pursue more financially profitable professions. Poor women were and are making art, but not in the sense of being professional art makers; it is more often part of their daily life tradition and a tool to earn money for survival, and their work is usually considered craft rather than art by institutionalized definitions. Baya, a poor servant and self-taught artist, produced a body of work that can be understood both from the perspective of class and her lack of formal education.

Bloom share the Norma Jean Calderwood University Professorship of Islamic and Asian Art at Boston College and the Hamad bin Khalifa Endowed Chair of Islamic Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. A wife-and- husband team of scholars, they are the authors, singly and together, of more than a dozen award-winning books and several hundred articles on all aspects of Islamic art. Keywords Islamic art; Islamic architecture AUTHOR PREFACE In the fall of 2001, after the horrific events of 9/11, Perry Chapman, the editor of The Art Bulletin, approached us about writing an article on Islamic art for the Bulletin’s series, The State of the Field. We initially refused because we did not want to antagonize our colleagues, particular in a small field where everyone knows everyone else, but she was very persuasive, arguing that art historians were increasingly interested in Islamic art and needed a judicious guide to negotiate the rapidly-expanding literature about it. As we had written several surveys and edited the section on the subject for The Dictionary of Art, she thought we had a broad perspective that would be appropriate for the intended readers, principally those outside the field. Our first draft was somewhat more light- hearted, but we were instructed that we needed to be more critical and that humour was not ‘done’ in The Art Bulletin.
