Bostonians and Their Neighbors as Pack Rats Downloaded from http://meridian.allenpress.com/american-archivist/article-pdf/24/2/141/2744123/aarc_24_2_t041107403161g77.pdf by guest on 27 September 2021 By L. H. BUTTERFIELD* Massachusetts Historical Society HE two-legged pack rat has been a common species in Boston and its neighborhood since the seventeenth century. Thanks Tto his activity the archival and manuscript resources concen- trated in the Boston area, if we extend it slightly north to include Salem and slightly west to include Worcester, are so rich and diverse as to be almost beyond the dreams of avarice. Not quite, of course, because Boston institutions and the super—pack rats who direct them are still eager to add to their resources of this kind, and constantly do. The admirable and long-awaited Guide to Archives and Manu- scripts in the United States, compiled by the National Historical Publications Commission and now in press, contains entries for be- tween 50 and 60 institutions holding archival and manuscript ma- terials in the Greater Boston area, with the immense complex of the Harvard University libraries in Cambridge counting only as one.1 The merest skimming of these entries indicates that all the activities of man may be studied from abundant accumulations of written records held by these institutions, some of them vast, some small, some general in their scope, others highly specialized. Among the fields in which there are distinguished holdings—one may say that specialists will neglect them only at their peril—are, first of all, American history and American literature, most of the sciences and the history of science, law and medicine, theology and church his- tory, the fine arts, finance and industry, maritime life, education, and reform.

JOHN'S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE Hontion MACMILLAN AND CO., LIMITED NEW YORK: THE MACMILLAN COMPANY 1899 A II rights reserved INTRODUCTION DR. ANTON MENGER'S remarkable study of the cardinal Dr doctrine of revolutionary socialism, now for the first W time published in English, has long enjoyed a wide reputation on the Continent; and English students of social philosophy, whether or not they are familiar with the original, will welcome its appearance in this trans- lation. The interest and importance of the subject will not be disputed, either by the opponents or the advocates of socialism ; and those who know how exceptionally Dr. Menger is qualified for work of this kind, by his juristic eminence, and his profound know- ledge of socialistic literature, will not need to be told that it has been executed with singular vigour and ability. Hitherto, perhaps because it was not generally accessible to English readers, the book has not received in this country the notice that it has met with elsewhere. Yet there are reasons why it should be of peculiar interest to English economists. The particular method of criticism adopted by Dr.

“That unhappy War of yours”: Eight Letters from Samuel Laurence to Old Friends in New York City, 1861–1875 DAVID SOUTHERN Samuel Laurence (circa 1850) Photograph by Anthony Coningham Sterling Copyright © National Portrait Gallery, London AMUEL LAURENCE (1812–84), A PORTRAIT ARTIST WHO SPECIALIZED in literary figures both British and American, was possibly Sborn in Guildford, Surrey, beyond which, at least until recently, nothing was known of his parentage, his education, or any signal events from his formative years, except that at some point he changed the spelling of his last name from Lawrence. CSA 24 2008 6 CARLYLE STUDIES ANNUAL He first exhibited his work in London in 1834 and moved easily in circles of London literati. On 10 August 1836, at All Soul’s Church, Marylebone, he married Anastasia Gliddon, cousin and adopted sister of Katherine Gliddon and sister-in-law of Thornton Leigh Hunt. Perhaps as early as 1840 and certainly by 1844, the Laurences were participants in a “Bohemian Phalanstery” modeled upon the utopian philosophy of Charles Fourier (1772–1837), and it included Thornton and Katherine Hunt, George Henry Lewes, and Mary Ann Evans.1 James Spedding likely introduced Laurence to the Carlyles (see CL 29: 355), and at least ten letters to him from Thomas Carlyle (TC) and one from Jane Welsh Carlyle (JWC) can be found in the New York Public Library (Ray collection), the National Library of Scotland (NLS), the University of California Library, Santa Cruz (Strouse collection), and the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections at Duke University’s Perkins Library. To a letter from TC to his sister Jean Aitken, 6 July 1838, JWC added this piquant postscript: “—only think Carlyle is to have his picture taken again this time by an artist of genius—if it succeeds I mean to buy it of the man[.] It was I formerly that used to be asked to sit for pictures but every dog has its day” (CLO).

  • 'New Political History'? 368
Conclusion New Horizons for the New Political History? On 28 August 1860 the Victorian Land Convention was politically discredited after a riot occurred at Parliament House. As noted in the last chapter, the Convention had already turned its organisational energies towards creating a voice within Parliament, where Don, Crews, Gray and Hunter now formed part of the fractious 'Corner' faction led by Charles Gavan Duffy. The 1860 riot arose during another deadlock between Assembly and Council over the Nicholson ministry's Land Bill. This Act, at least in its early form, almost replicated the land selection policies drawn up by the Convention in 1857.' However, the legislation which eventually passed Council in September 1860 bore little resemblance to the original. During the riot the crowd attempted to breach the doors of Parliament house and threatened members with violence as they escaped towards the city. At about ten in the evening the Riot Act was read by the Mayor of Melbourne, after which the menacing assembly was dispersed by a series of mounted police charges. Protesters retaliated by pelting stones at police, several being seriously injured. Hundreds involved in the violence wore red- ribbons 'to denote those who were capable of ulterior movements' .2 Emergency legislation immediately was passed preventing political demonstrations near Parliament House, and during the next few days over a thousand special constables were sworn in for Melbourne's protection. 3 In some ways, it was 1848 all over again. See Serle, The golden age, pp. 296-99. For accounts of the Parliament house riot see Argus, 29 August 1860, p.
