Manly for Manly Community Program

The 2014/2015 season was no doubt one of the Waratahs most successful. The “Manly for Manly” program for this season also followed suit, allowing the MWDCC family to contribute to various community groups, charities and junior cricket throughout the beaches.

With the success of “Manly for Manly” in its first season it was imperative the Waratahs looked to improve and build on a program that has become a large part of the clubs culture. The introduction of new charity partners including the Red Cross, Happy Days and Beyond Blue whilst strengthening our existing relationships with the McGrath Foundation, Movember and Stewart House paved the way for the program to grow even further.

The playing group kicked off the year with the inclusion of the “Bleed Blue” blood donations program. In partnership with the Red Cross, players donated blood at the Dee Why Surf Life Saving club. The club also registered itself as a “Club Red Member” with the Red Cross. Players, officials, family and friends could donated blood through different stages of the year and have it contributed to the clubs total donations.

Beyond Blue also provided support and education to the playing group throughout the season, whilst also promoting awareness on the issue of men’s health, mental health and depression t the wider community.

The Waratah playing group continued to give back to the next generation of Manly stars. With individuals taking the time out to get back to the grass roots of Northern Beaches Cricket. Players visited and carried out numerous coaching clinics throughout the season with the associated junior cricket associations.

The Waratahs also hosted its own coaching clinic at Grahams Reserve before the Christmas break catering to approximately 60 junior boys and girls running numerous bowling, batting and fielding drills. Hopefully our junior cricketers gained some extra knowledge and a few new role models to look up to.

We also continued our visits to Stewart House this season where 2-3 players would spend the afternoon with groups of underprivileged children. Playing various games and activities on Dee Why beach. Taking the time out to put a smile on a few small faces is something that helps us all.

Our players view it as themselves, who gain the most out of the “Manly for Manly’ program. We have learnt that giving back is one of the great joys in life and cannot wait to continue our efforts next season.

Past vs Present Pink Stumps Day – The Fiona Lyon Cup

This year we once again pitched our past team vs the rock stars of the present to battle it out for the Fiona Lyon cup.

Fiona Lyon was our club treasurer and canteen manager who tragically passed away 2 years ago after a long battle with breast cancer. She was the heart of Manly Oval for so many years and her passing was an absolute tragedy. But it’s also a reminder that we should always keep our health as our priority, and make sure you get regular check-ups.

The Fiona Lyon Cup continued its trend of changing hands each season with the Adam Gummer led Present side reclaiming the cup from the Past team. It was a nail biting affair with the Past team needing 4 off the last ball to tie the match a reclaim the cup. With President Andrew Fraser on strike and facing fast bowler James Munting, a french cut was headed to the boundary until ‘keeper Rowan Hamman dived full stretch to his left to prevent a boundary.

Highlights of the day were Shawn Bradstreet’s brilliant batting, old spinners Mark Taylor and Chris Hynes showing they can still give the ball some good revolutions, Simon Lyon’s swing bowling, and Jarrod Rawlings match winning innings.

Of course the day was played in good spirit and doubled as our pink stumps day for the Jane McGrath Foundation. Katie Tucker, wife of ex-first grade fast bowler Geoff, had organised a ladies luncheon to help raise money for the McGrath Foundation. And what an event it was. Over 50 ladies turned up to an event that included guest speaker Rhiannon Rees, plenty of bubbles and some amazing food and some live entertainment.

This is the first time I have written anything about Sam Gainsford myself. Hey, just won my first comp in 28 years so The selection panel were very unsure what to do thought, why not? Campbelltown this year that I have seen. He has a huge amount of ability and great leadership qualities. Will Outred He is a guy that if next year can put some scores Will performed well all year and was an asset to have together back to back could move up the grades in the team. He got given an opportunity to play 3s quickly. and I am sure that he will have that opportunity again through next season. Will very rarely bowled a bad Lance Stewart spell and was also really good at times with the Bat. A Lance was one of the main people I went to for cricketer that has a lot of ability and should be looking support as captain. He is someone that I felt I could to push for higher grades next season. depend on as captain to offer advice when needed and for that I am thankful. With a successful start to next season there is no reason why Sam can’t make his way to 2s Ed Burgess again. Ed deserved to play in 3s for the final series. He is an extremely talented cricketer that I think everyone will Ben Falconer admit is too good for 4th grade. A guy that was great Ben started the year in 4s however he did play a lot to have in the team and instrumental to get us to the of 3rd grade. Ben’s bowling has come a long way over position of minor premiers. I look forward to seeing the past 2 seasons and it is great to see him Ed play much higher grades in the years to come. continuing to improve. He is a good club man to have in our team and you know when you throw him the Zac Trewartha ball you are going to get 100%. His bowling was Zac had a fantastic year with the bat and a good year always very consistent. with the ball. Zac played the majority of the year in 4th grade but it was fantastic to see him go up to 3s Josh Wigney off the back of some really good performances. The It was fantastic to see the improvement in Josh’s ability that Zac has to hit the ball as clean as he does bowling over the season. He very much ended the is something that will see him progress through the season a much improved and consistent bowler. He grades and if he can work hard on his patience at the had some great performances through the season crease he will no doubt bat in the top 6 for a long time and his improvement in bowling with the new ball to come.
