Included by Barnes and McDunnough (1918) in their Group XVII (also adopted by Forbes, 1954), which feed mainly on members of the Rosaceae; 12 other members of this group (as redefined by Kons and Borth, 2015b) also occur in North Carolina. FIELD GUIDE DESCRIPTIONS: Covell (1984) ONLINE PHOTOS: MPG, BugGuide, BAMONA, BOLD TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION, ADULTS: Barnes and MacDunnough (1918); Forbes (1954); Sargent (1976) TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION, IMMATURE STAGES: Wagner et al. (2011) ID COMMENTS: A medium-sized Underwing (smaller than other members of the Rosaceae-feeding group), with fairly plain forewings and yellow-and-black banded hindwings. In the typical form, the ground color of the forewings is a dull yellowish- green, with fairly uniform shading from the base to the outer margin. A dark brown form also exists in our area, but apart from differences in the ground color has markings similar to the typical form, not more reduced as in form titania. No basal dash is present whatsoever and the antemedian and postmedian are mainly thin black lines except where they intersect the costa; the lower portion of the postmedian, where it bends back towards the base of the wing and parallels the inner margin, is also usually darker, with an umber shade below it. Catocala alabamae is similar to C. grynea, which is usually a darker, olive green and possesses a more extensive and contrasting orange-brown shade between the horizontal portion of the postmedian and inner margin. Catocala praeclara can also have a similar greenish color, but characteristically has a well-developed basal dash and more heavily darkened antemedian and postmedian lines. DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the Coastal Plain in North Carolina FLIGHT COMMENT: Univoltine, with our records concentrated in June and early July HABITAT: Most of our records come from xeric sand rims bordering Carolina Bays; this is the same type of habitat used by Catocala grisatra and both species may be feeding on Crataegus munda in those areas. The same may be true for records in the Fall-line Sandhills but the record from Northampton County comes from rich bottomland hardwoods, where riparian hawthorns are common and support a number of Crataegus-feeding Catocalas. FOOD: Stenophagous, feeding on hawthorns (Sargent, 1976; Wagner et al., 2011). OBSERVATION_METHODS: Comes to lights, at least to some extent; probably also comes to bait, but we have no records for that method in North Carolina NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM RANKS: G4 S2S3 STATE PROTECTION: Has no legal protection, although permits are required to collect it on state parks and other public lands. COMMENTS: We have few records for this species in North Carolina, where it appears to be strongly associated with xeric sand ridges with large populations of hawthorns; some use of riparian hawthorns is also likely. More information is needed on the distribution, abundance, habitat associations, and host plant range before an accurate assessment of its conservation status can be made. Kons Jr. Last Update: June 2001 Abstract A systematic check list of 489 species of Lepidoptera collected in the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Lab is presented, including 464 species in the superfamilies Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Mimalonoidea, Bombycoidea, Sphingoidea, and Noctuoidea. Taxa recorded in Psychidae, Yponomeutidae, Sesiidae, Cossidae, Zygaenoidea, and Thyrididae are also included. Moth taxa were collected at ultraviolet lights, bait, introduced Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum), and by netting specimens. A list of taxa recorded feeding on P. notatum is presented. Introduction The University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Laboratory (NATL) contains 40 acres of natural habitats maintained for scientific research, conservation, and teaching purposes. Habitat types present include hammock, upland pine, disturbed open field, cat tail marsh, and shallow pond. An active management plan has been developed for this area, including prescribed burning to restore the upland pine community and establishment of plots to study succession (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/natl.htm). The site is a popular collecting locality for student and scientific collections. The author has done extensive collecting and field work at NATL, and two previous reports have resulted from this work, including: a biodiversity inventory of the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea) of NATL (Kons 1999), and an ecological study of Hermeuptychia hermes (F.) and Megisto cymela (Cram.) in NATL habitats (Kons 1998). Other workers have posted NATL check lists for Ichneumonidae, Sphecidae, Tettigoniidae, and Gryllidae (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/insect.htm).

You are still able to Crambid Snout Moths (Crambidae) view vast expanses of ridge and swale Achyra rantalis floodplain features, numerous bayous, Garden Webworm Moth oxbow lakes, and cypress/tupelo swamps Aethiophysa invisalis along the Trinity River. It is one of Argyria lacteella only 14 priority-one bottomland sites Milky Urola Moth identified for protection in the Texas Carectocultus perstrialis Bottomland Protection Plan. Texas is Reed-boring Crambid Moth home to an estimated 4,000 species of Chalcoela iphitalis moths. Most of the nearly 400 species of Sooty-winged Chalcoela moths listed below were photographed Chrysendeton medicinalis around the security lights at the Refuge Bold Medicine Moth Headquarters building located adjacent Colomychus talis to a bottomland hardwood forest. Many Distinguished Colomychus more moths are not even attracted to Conchylodes ovulalis lights, so additional surveys will need Zebra Conchylodes to be conducted to document those Crambus agitatellus species. These forests also support a Double-banded Grass-veneer wide diversity of mammals, reptiles, Crambus satrapellus amphibians, and fish with many feeding Crocidophora tuberculalis on moths or their larvae. In 4 Louisiana, alabamae occurs uncommonly in four parishes (Fig. 2). Sargent (1976) states alabamae is rare and sporatic in the east. Covell (1984) states number of adults alabamae is locally common in Florida, bur rare or 0 absent in much of its range. Likewise in Louisiana it Fig. 3. Adult C. alabamae captured in Louisiana. n = 71 is never taken in large numbers. The records listed here represent 35 years of continual light trapping and 20 years of bait trapping. The forewing coloration of alabamae in Louisiana is bluish-gray, unlike some Floridian specimens, which exhibit a greenish suffusion over the forewings. The single annual brood peaks at the end of May (Fig.3). C. alabamae can be captured at ultraviolet light and more often at fermenting fruit bait. I have not included the described species Catocala olivia Hy. Edw. (Fig. 6a,b) and Catocala titania Dodge (Fig. 6c,d) among the series of 71 specimens I am reporting for alabamae . C. olivia was not mentioned by Covell (1984) nor Sargent (1976), though olivia was listed and pictured (plate XXXII) as occurring in Texas by Holland (1903) and is listed for Texas by Knudson & Bordelon (1999).

    Contributions to a Biodiversity Inventory of the Late Summer Lepidoptera Species of Twin Swamps Nature Preserve in Posey County, Indiana By Hugo L. Kons Jr. & Robert J. Borth January 2012 DRAFT, For the North American Journal of Lepidoptera Biodiversity Abstract We present records for 435 species of Lepidoptera collected during mid and late August at Twin Swamps Nature Preserve in Posey County in southwestern Indiana, including 423 species of Macrolepidoptera and 29 species of Catocala (Noctuidae). Surveys were conducted with MV sheets, UV light traps, rotten banana bait, and diurnal searching. Habitat types surveyed in the preserve include hydric hardwood forest (swamp flatwoods), overcup oak slough, swamp cottonwood-bald cypress swamp, and old field with extensive sweet gum encroachment. All recorded Catocala species and twenty-five species potentially near the northern limit of their range are discussed. Acknowledgments We thank Roger Hedge and John Bacone of the Indiana DNR's Division of Nature Preserves for providing authorization for this research. Brain Abrell, Ron Crawford, and Thomas Westfall provided information on habitats and plants present in the preserve. BROU JR. 137 Jack Loyd Rd., Abita Springs, Louisiana 70420 ABSTRACT. Catocala charlottae is described from Louisiana and Florida, the type series consisting of 100 males and 64 females. The new species is differentiated from its most similar ally, C. alabamae Grote, mainly by genitalic characters. Adults and genitalia of both sexes of both species are illustrated. Additional key words: Noctuidae, Catocala charlottae, C. alabamae, taxonomy, un­ derwings. The small-bodied underwing described here, Catocala charlottae, closely resembles C. alabamae Grote both superficially and in male genitalia. Catocala charlottae has been taken at the type locality in Louisiana, and at several Florida localities. Louisiana C. alabamae are similar to those occurring through most of its known range. A lifesize color photo of the C. alabamae holotype in the British Museum (Natural History) was examined and it precisely matched Louisiana C. alabamae. Catocala charlottae Broll, new species (Figs. 1,2, 5, 6) Forewing length of males averaging 19.5 mm (18.5-21.2 mm, N = 54); of females, 20.9 mm (19.7-21.8 mm, N = 32). Forewing slate gray with distinct bold black antemedial line and anal dash. Most specimens have a bold medium brown broad line paralleling basal side of antemedial line, absent above R j • Same brown coloring evident between postmedial and subterminal line and especially noticeable as a distinct brown patch below anal dash Brown spot at middle of costal margin above vein R j • Reniform and subreniform present, sometimes diffuse and indistinct.
