EL ÁMBITO TERRITORIAL Este Capítulo del PLATERME considera todas las facetas características del territorio insular mediante una revisión del medio físico y de las infraestructuras existentes orientada exclusivamente a los objetivos de redacción e implementación del Plan, que tiene por objeto evaluar los elementos territoriales que pueden originar alteraciones de la normalidad, identificando todos los riesgos derivados de estas que pueden dar origen a situaciones de emergencia. DESCRIPCIÓN DEL MEDIO FÍSICO 2.1. SITUACIÓN Y SUPERFICIE La isla de Menorca es la más oriental y septentrional de las Islas Baleares. Es la segunda en extensión y tercera en población del archipiélago mediterráneo. Está situada en el centro del Mediterráneo occidental entre los paralelos 40º 5’ 17’’ y 39º 47’ 6’’N y los meridianos 3º 46’ 14’’ y 4º 18’ 21’’E, a mitad de distancia entre la Península Ibérica y las islas de Córcega y Cerdeña, y equidistante de Francia y Argelia. La superficie total de la Isla es de 694,22 km2 (Varía según la fuente) con un perímetro de costas de 216 km. Menorca se encuentra separada de su isla hermana más próxima, Mallorca, por el Canal de Menorca cuya profundidad mínima es de 80 m. Tiene una forma alargada del SE al NO, con una longitud de 53 Km (del cabo Bajolí en la costa de Poniente al cabo de la Mola en la costa de Levante), y una anchura de 22 Km (entre la Punta Na Guillemasa en la Mola de Fornells, en la costa norte, y las Playas de Son Bou en el litoral Sur), siendo la anchura media de 13 km. La distancia mínima entre la costa norte y sur es de 8,3 Km. y se da en algunos puntos del extremo oriental de la misma. El territorio menorquín está dividido en ocho municipios que de levante a poniente son: Mahón, Es Castell, San Luís, Alayor, Es Mercadal, Es Migjorn, Ferrerias y Ciudadela Capítulo 2: Ámbito territorial Proyecto BP/PC-045/16 Página 5 Febrero 2017 PLAN TERRITORIAL DE PROTECCIÓN CIVIL DE LA ISLA DE MENORCA (PLATERME) Cap. 2- Ámbito territorial Febrero 2017 La riqueza natural de la Isla ha hecho que en el año 1993 sea declarada por la UNESCO ’Reserva Mundial de la Biosfera’, aproximadamente un 40% de su territorio está protegido por la Ley de Espacios Naturales de Especial Interés. 2.1.1. CARACTERÍSTICAS GEOLÓGICAS Esta descripción omite, en lo posible, la terminología científica, para orientarse a la naturaleza del terreno en relación con la ocurrencia de riesgos y como condicionante de los movimientos y actividades de los servicios de emergencia, en situación de normalidad o en combinación con fenómenos meteorológicos. Las rocas más antiguas que afloran en Menorca están formadas por materiales devónicos y carboníferos (rocas de aspecto pizarroso y areniscas cuarzosas). Estos materiales forman el basamento de los sedimentos depositados posteriormente. También están formadas por materiales detríticos (restos de otras rocas transportados por los glaciares: la arcilla es una roca detrítica de grano muy fino) que reposan sobre ellos. En esta época es cuando se depositan las areniscas rojas y las arcillas que han sido interpretadas como sedimentos fluviales. Con el paso del tiempo son las calizas y las dolomías (rocas sedimentarias de origen químico compuestas básicamente de dolomita, cuya composición química es carbonato de calcio y magnesio), (ver imágenes siguientes) junto con los sedimentos de arcillas y margas las que forman los siguientes niveles, continuando con la sedimentación de materiales calcáreos.
