The following year he returned at the wheel of a Maserati and finished the season in second place. Fangio always made it his policy to garner the loyalty of the team mechanics. He told them that they would receive ten percent of any winnings. During practice for the Italian Grand Prix he complained of a severe vibration but come race day the problem had completely disappeared. The mechanics had switched cars in the middle of the night and given Fangio's vibrating car to his teammate Bonetto. In he moved to the Mercedes team and won his second World Championship. Fangio drove twelve Grands Prix for Mercedes winning eight times. This began a string of four straight titles. In he won a particularly brutal race at the Argentine Grand Prix. The three-hour race was run during a grueling heat wave. In the championship arrived at the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring where it was generally acknowledge by the Grand Prix Circus that this would be Fangio's last season. He was determined to finish on top. Fangio and Hawthorn qualified one-two and the race looked set for an epic battle. The Maserati of Fangio started the race on half tanks and it was incumbent on him to build a large enough margin that would allow him to pit yet retain his lead. This he started to do, blistering the track at a record pace but Hawthorn and Collins in the Ferraris had other ideas. On the twelfth lap Fangio dove into the pits. Even though everyone in the Maserati pits was prepared the pit stop cost Fangio the lead when both Collins and Hawthorn thundered past. Finally the work was done and Fangio re-entered the fray. All seamed loss as Fangio was now 45 seconds behind the leading duo and few thought that even the great Fangio could make up this difference. Fangio was one of the few as he began chopping off large chunks of the gap to the leaders. In the Ferrari pit panic took hold as they pleaded for their drivers to go ever faster. Fangio would later say that he drove faster than he ever wanted to drive again. The lap record came tumbling down and he would soon be lapping at a faster average speed than that with which he had qualified! Both Collins and Hawthorn continued to race at a furious pace. Peter Lewis, the famous British journalist said that "he Fangio might almost have been pullingthem backwards on the end of a rope for on the twentieth lap Fangio sliced eleven seconds off their lead. Fangio caught Collins first and passed him on the inside but the Englishman returned the favor and pushed Fangio back into third. Just the Collins was hit in the eye by a stone thrown up by the Maserati's rear wheel but was saved by his goggles. Now it was Hawthorn's turn and still Fangio came on; actually driving straight on in one corner to pass force his way past Hawthorn. He finished second to Giuseppe Farina. Fangio would qualify on pole position. Fangio flourished in Formula One racing when the world championship was in its infancy and he was a comparatively 'Old Man' - which is what his admiring rivals called the aging genius who won his last driving title in , when he was Most of his challengers were young enough to be his sons, and nearly all of them came from privileged backgrounds far removed from Fangio's humble origins in a remote corner of Argentina, in the dusty frontier town of Balcarce. His father and mother, hard-working immigrants from the Abruzzi region of Italy to whom Fangio was deeply devoted, raised their six children three boys and three girls to believe in God and the dignity of labour. Fangio credited his parents with instilling in him the virtues of honesty and integrity, self-discipline, respect for others and the sense of responsibility that characterized his approach to life. Eleven years after his birth on June 24, , Fangio started working as a mechanic and then spent nearly four decades in that trade, while also racing primitive self-prepared cars in incredibly arduous South American long distance races that made Formula One events seem like child's play. By his superhuman efforts in these marathons of madness held over thousands of miles for weeks at a time Fangio overcame astonishing hardships and astronomical odds to score many victories. When he went racing in Europe, at 38, he brought with him an unrivalled repertoire of mechanical understanding, competitive experience and clever racecraft. Formula One competition in much more sophisticated cars also enabled Fangio to hone his driving skills to the highest degree. A pioneering exponent of the four-wheel drift, he was wonderfully entertaining to watch, negotiating corners in fearsomely spectacular, yet completely controlled tyre-smoking powerslides that thrilled onlookers. Beyond his brilliant car control, Fangio's sheer brute strength and astonishing stamina enabled him to excel in an era that required heavy, hard-to- handle cars to be hauled around rough-hewn tracks for the three hour-plus endurance tests that were then the Grand Prix norm. After Hawthorn was 2nd to Harry Schell in a Vanwall in practice, Francis improved the 250F by dropping the axle ratio and taking a leaf out of the rear spring (DASO 147). Hawthorn then won the race from Schell. This was just after Hawthorn had left Vandervell’s team, dissatisfied with their reliability, and returned to Ferrari for the classic GPs. The port fuel injection engine of the 1955 Vanwall. The Bosch pump was driven from the front of the inlet camshaft and the fuel flow was controlled mechanically. The airflow was controlled by otherwise- empty Amal carburetter bodies close to the ports. This system can be contrasted with the unsuccessful SU system on Moss’ Maserati at Easter Goodwood. 1956 Practice for Easter Goodwood The new BRM P25 (IL4 2½ litre naturally- aspirated). This was its 3rd event after a non- start at Aintree and a DNF at Oulton Park in 1955. Hawthorn drove it but after transmission failure in the race which resulted in the car overturning was lucky to escape serious injury.     CORRENTI DELLA STORIA ALBERTO ASCARI (1918–1955) Last month’s essay (February, 2017), dealt with the life and work of Enzo Ferrari, who was both a race-car driver and owner/builder of high performance automobiles. He also founded and ran the racing team of Scude- ria Ferrari. This month’s essay is about one of that team’s most successful and famous drivers, Alberto Ascari. He became a very close friend of Ferrari, so much so that after his tragic death in a racing accident, Ferrari was terribly distraught and decided from then on to avoid making close personal friendships with his drivers. Alberto was the son of one of Italy’s great pre-war drivers, Antonio Ascari. He went on to become one of Formula One racing’s most dominant and best-loved champions. He was known for his careful precision and finely-judged accuracy that made him one of the safest drivers in a very dangerous era of auto racing. He was also notoriously superstitious and took great pains to avoid tempting fate. But his unexplained fatal accident—at exactly the same age as his father’s (36), on the same day of the month (the 26th) and in eerily similar circumstances—remains one of Formula One racing’s great unsolved mysteries (see below). During his short nine-year racing career, Alberto Ascari won 47 international races in 56 starts. His two Formula One World Championships attest to his ranking as one of the greatest drivers in European history. Alberto was born in Milan, Italy on July 13, 1918.

    Hello FCA Southwest Region Members, I am honored to serve as your President at this exciting time in our club’s history. The Ferrari Club of America celebrating our 50th Anniversary, Ferrari Passione, and our Region hosting the International FCA Event in Palm Springs October 1 0–14, 2012. I am a proud, original owner, of a red, 1998 355GTS. I enjoy tracking, rallying, and showing my car. I’ve participated in four International FCA Events including Monterey ’04, Indy ’05, Watkins Glen ’07 and Road America ’09. My car has won three Platinum Awards and one Gold Award as well as three Coppa Bella Machinas. The International FCA Events are a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow Ferrari enthusiasts from all over the world. You also get a chance to work on your car and get it ready to be shown in the Concours if you choose. If you have never shown your car it is a delightful learning experience. We plan on having a seminar in the near future to educate our members on what the judges are looking October –December 2011 for and how points are deducted. You would be surprised at how you get to know your car when you pay attention to details. Also, if you have never driven your car on the track, there is a whole new world to explore. There will be track instructors to help the beginners and seasoned drivers hoping to President ’s learn “the line” at a new track. The Rally is another way to enjoy your beautiful machine with your partner.
