The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves. Tagovailoa, the 2018 Maxwell Award winner, has thrown for 3,353 yards and a school record 37 touchdowns with only four inter- ceptions. Named The Sporting News and Walter Camp Player of the Year, Tagovailoa passed for 300 or more yards an Alabama- record five times in 2018 and has five games with four or more touchdown passes, which is also a school record. Wilkins became the third student-athlete ever to be named to three straight AFCA FBS Coaches’ All-America Teams, joining Houston’s Ed Oliver, who achieved the feat this year as well, and the great Herschel Walker of Georgia. From 1945 until 1967, only one team was chosen. From 1967 through 1971, two teams, University Division and College Division, were selected. In 1972, the College Division was split into College I and College II. In 1979, the University Division was split into two teams — Division I-A and Division I-AA. In 1996, the College I and College II teams were renamed Division II and Division III, respectively. In 2006, the Division I-A and Division I-AA teams were renamed Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), respectively. The AFCA started selecting an NAIA All-America Team in 2006. In 2016, the AFCA added a second team All-America. Top Team: With their record eight selections in 2018, Alabama has had the most players named to the AFCA FBS Coaches’ All- America Team. The Crimson Tide has been represented 82 times by 77 players on the AFCA team. They are followed by Oklahoma (70/61); Ohio State (67/51); Notre Dame (63/56); Michigan (61/55); USC (58/51); Nebraska (51/46); Texas (51/45); Florida State (41/37); LSU (39/35); Georgia (39/33); UCLA (36/34); Miami (Fla.) (34/33); Auburn (34/32); Penn State (34/32) and Tennessee (32/30). Top Conference: The Southeastern Conference boasts the most AFCA FBS Coaches’ All-America Team representatives among cur- rent conference members with 320. Following the SEC are the Big 12 (290), Big Ten (288), Atlantic Coast (215), Pac-12 (211), American Athletic (76), Mountain West (58), Conference USA (51), Sun Belt (40) and Mid-American (34) (Totals include school All-America selec- tions in all divisions). Alabama offensive lineman Jonah Williams, Clemson offensive lineman Mitch Hyatt, West Virginia wide receiver David Sills V and Northern Illinois defensive lineman Sutton Smith earned AFCA FBS Coaches’ All-America honors for a second consecutive season in 2018. Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky earned his second AFCA All-America honor after being named to the 2016 team. Three-Timer: Clemson’s Christian Wilkins and Houston’s Ed Oliver join Georgia’s Herschel Walker as the only three-time AFCA FBS Coaches’ All-Americans in the 74-year history of the team. Walker earned his All-America honors from 1980 to 1982, while Wilkins and Oliver earned their picks from 2016 to 2018. Four For Four: No player has earned AFCA FBS All-America honors four times, however Eastern Washington’s Cooper Kupp and Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Johnny Bailey are the only players to earn AFCA Coaches’ All-America honors in four consecutive years at any level.

After all, these two cross-division rivals don’t meet very often. It’s the two SEC division leaders facing off, with the Bulldogs facing their third Top-15 foe in a row after dominating No. 7 Auburn 27-6 at home and then humbling No. 14 Tennessee 44-21 last week in Knoxville. Fans are scratching their heads regarding Alabama’s defense after giving up a school-record 647 total yards in a 63-48 win at Ole Miss last week. The timing may be right for a Georgia offense that is only 34th nationally but still averaging 420.0 yards per game. But it’s the ‘Bama offense we’re dwelling on here and its three offensive lineman from our Watch List. This trio – center Landon Dickerson (#69, Gr., Hickory, N.C.), left guard Deonte Brown (#65, Decatur, Ala.) and left of- fensive tackle Alex Leatherwood (#70, Pensacola, Fla.) – is powering the country’s top scoring team at 51.0 points per game playing three games within the SEC, and its third-best offense cranking at 560.3 yards per game. Nobody has stopped it yet. The 723 total yards the Tide gained at Ole Miss was its second-most ever and the 63 points it scored marked the 16th consecutive game that Alabama has scored 35-or-more points, the longest streak in major-college football history.

    2018 OUTLAND TROPHY SEMIFINALISTS UNVEILED OMAHA (FWAA) – Eight semifinalists for the 2018 Outland Trophy – including two pairs of teammates – were announced Wednesday by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee and the Football Writers Association of America. The eight semifinalists are players from six schools at five different positions representing five different conferences. The field for the 2018 Outland Trophy is as follows, listed in alphabetical order: North Carolina State center Garrett Bradbury, Wisconsin guard Michael Deiter, Clemson offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt, Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver, Oklahoma guard Ben Powers, Clemson defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, Alabama offensive tackle Jonah Williams and Alabama nose guard Quinnen Williams. The eight semifinalists will be pared to three finalists next week and announced on Nov. 20. The recipient of the 73rd Outland Trophy will be announced during ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 6, live from the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner presented by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee on Jan. 9, 2019. The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves. Briscoe, a top-three finalist for the Walter Payton Award, has thrown for a SHSU single-season record 5,003 yards which leads the nation. He also leads the nation in passing yards per game (357.4) and touchdown passes (45). Taylor, a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, led the nation with 162 tackles, 13.5 stops per game and 96 assisted tackles.
