CHAPTER 2 BERLIN DURING THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC The period of the Weimar Republic is divided into three periods, 1918 to 1923, 1924 to 1929, and 1930 to 1933, but we usually associate Weimar culture with the middle period when the post WWI revolutionary chaos had settled down and before the Nazis made their aggressive claim for power. This second period of the Weimar Republic after 1924 is considered Berlin’s most prosperous period, and is often referred to as the “Golden Twenties”. They were exciting and extremely vibrant years in the history of Berlin, as a sophisticated and innovative culture developed including architecture and design, literature, film, painting, music, criticism, philosophy, psychology, and fashion. For a short time Berlin seemed to be the center of European creativity where cinema was making huge technical and artistic strides. Like a firework display, Berlin was burning off all its energy in those five short years. A literary walk through Berlin during the Weimar period begins at the Kurfürstendamm, Berlin’s new part that came into its prime during the Weimar period. Large new movie theaters were built across from the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church, the Capitol und Ufa-Palast, and many new cafés made the Kurfürstendamm into Berlin’s avant-garde boulevard. Max Reinhardt’s theater became a major attraction along with bars, nightclubs, wine restaurants, Russian tearooms and dance halls, providing a hangout for Weimar’s young writers. But Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm is mostly famous for its revered literary cafés, Kranzler, Schwanecke and the most renowned, the Romanische Café in the impressive looking Romanische Haus across from the Memorial church. -

Abstract Beginning his early literary career as an author who nurtured his fiction with personal facts and experiences, many of Christopher Isherwood’s novels focus on constructing an identity and discovering himself not only as an adult but also as an author. He is one of those unique authors whose gradual transformation from late adolescence to young and middle adulthood can be clearly observed since he portrays different stages of his life in fiction. His critically acclaimed novel A Single Man, which reflects “the afternoon of his life;” is a poetic portrayal of Isherwood’s confrontation with ageing and death anxiety. Written during the early 1960s, stormy relationship with his partner Don Bachardy, the fight against cancer of two of his close friends’ (Charles Laughton and Aldous Huxley) and his own health problems surely contributed the formation of A Single Man. The purpose of this study is to unveil how Isherwood’s midlife crisis nurtured his creativity in producing this work of fiction. From a theoretical point of view, this paper, draws from literary gerontology and ‘the Lifecourse Perspective’ which is a theoretical framework in social gerontology. -

VI. Plädoyers und Urteil – die finale Verwirrung 1. Zeitspiel – aus den Tiefen der Ebene zum Ende Für die Berichterstattung über den Demjanjuk-Prozess hatte ich mich im Spätsommer 2009 freiwillig gemeldet, obwohl es für einen fest angestellten Redakteur der ARD eher ungewöhnlich ist, langfristig Reporteraufgaben zu übernehmen. Mir schien das Verfahren zeithistorisch interessant, auch wenn niemand wusste, wie lange es sich hinziehen würde. Allerdings gab es später auch Tage, an denen ich die Freiwilligkeit bereute. Vor allem wäh- rend der Beweisaufnahme, als scheinbar nichts vorwärts ging im Gerichtssaal. Andererseits war das Geschehen auch faszinierend: Das stete Kräftemessen zwischen Anklage, Richterbank und Verteidigung, die Prozessführung, die juristische Anwendung der Täterforschung zum Holocaust. Ein Neugier- Faktor mag auch das Gerichtsgebäude als solches gewesen sein. Der neue Münchner Justizpalast, eine grau-grüne Betonburg aus den 1970er Jahren, bot jeden Tag ein Kaleidoskop unserer Gesellschaft. Es genügte, sich still diejenigen anzuschauen, die morgens an der Sicherheitsschleuse standen. Wer war als Zeuge geladen, wer kam als Beschuldigter? Wenn nur ein Ende absehbar gewesen wäre! Anfangs hatte das Gericht nur bis Mai 2010 geplant. Danach begannen die Verlängerungen: Diese Verhandlungstage wurden durch Gerichtsmitteilungen bekannt gegeben: am 3. März und am 24. No- 1 vember 2010, am 3. Februar 2011 und am 18. März 2011 . Obwohl Straf- prozesse immer wieder Unwägbarkeiten mit sich bringen, war dies doch eher ungewöhnlich – und das umso mehr, als die Ungewissheit sogar bis zum letzten Prozesstag anhielt. Denn erst am Mittag des 12. Mai 2011 war allen klar, dass sie an diesem Tag auch das Urteil hören würden. Bis zuletzt hoffte ich mit anderen Zuhörern und Prozessbeteiligten, den einen historischen Augenblick zu erleben, wenn John Demjanjuk sein Schweigen brechen und berichten würde, was sich ereignet hatte nach seiner Gefangennahme durch die Wehrmacht im Frühjahr 1942. -

The Unforgiving Margin in the Fiction of Christopher Isherwood Paul Michael McNeil Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 Copyright 2011 Paul Michael McNeil All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Unforgiving Margin in the Fiction of Christopher Isherwood Paul Michael McNeil Rebellion and repudiation of the mainstream recur as motifs throughout Christopher Isherwood‟s novels and life, dating back to his early experience of the death of his father and continuing through to the end of his own life with his vituperative rant against the heterosexual majority. Threatened by the accepted, by the traditional, by the past, Isherwood and his characters escape to the margin, hoping to find there people who share alternative values and ways of living that might ultimately prove more meaningful and enlightened than those they leave behind in the mainstream. In so doing, they both discover that the margin is a complicated place that is more often menacing than redemptive. Consistently, Isherwood‟s fiction looks at margins and the impulse to flee from the mainstream in search of a marginal alternative. On the one hand, these alternative spaces are thought to be redemptive, thought to liberate and nourish. Isherwood reveals that they do neither. To explore this theme, the dissertation focuses on three novels, The Berlin Stories (The Last of Mr. Norris and Goodbye to Berlin), A Meeting by the River, and A Single Man, because ach of these novels corresponds to marginal journeys of Isherwood— namely, his sexual and creative exile in Berlin from 1929 to 1933, his embrace of Hindu philosophy, and his life as a homosexual. -

In 1939 waren zo’n 70 procent van de 9000 inwoners Joden. Van de rijke Joodse geschiedenis van de plaats getuigen tot op de dag van van- daag een schitterende synagoge uit de baroktijd en twee andere kleine gebedshuizen. Het vernietigingskamp Sobibor maakte een einde aan deze geschiedenis. De Duitse bezetter bouwde het vanaf maart 1942 twaalf kilometer zuidelijk van Włodawa in een uitge- strekt bosgebied. Closing Argument Professor Dr. Cornelius Nestler in the Criminal Proceeding against John Demjanjuk (Presented before the Munich District Court on April 13, 2011) Dear Presiding Judge, Ladies and Gentlemen Judges, Gentlemen Prosecutors, Gentlemen Defense Counsels, Gentlemen Colleagues Representing the Co- Plaintiffs, Dear Co-Plaintiffs I am presenting this closing argument as the co-plaintiffs’ moving statements are still resonating with us. I want to use this opportunity to note that this court’s presiding judge, and along with him the entire administration of the District Court, made this otherwise difficult situation easier for the co-plaintiffs to bear with their extraordinary prudence, care and friendliness. The co-plaintiffs were and continue to be very impressed. This criminal proceeding did not only grant them the opportunity, as provided by the law, to come forward as co-plaintiffs. This criminal proceeding was for them also a distinctive, a downright overwhelming experience of the respect which the German judiciary accords the Jewish victims of the Nazi rule. The co-plaintiffs want to thank you! The prosecution has set forth why, after the taking of evidence, there can be but one decision by the court – guilty. The reasoning presented by Dr. Lutz, the prosecutor, is convincing. Following the prosecution’s closing arguments, my colleagues Mssrs. Kleidermann, Langer, Laurent, Mendelsohn, and Schünemann presented important complementary questions and addressed them in detail. After such a long period of taking evidence, it is certain that every participant in the trial will be able to think of additional arguments relating to one or the other question. And one detail or the other might have to be accentuated differently; yet, where the core of the matter is concerned, the result is definite: conviction.
