I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets. -
Ejection Patterns
Ejections Through the Years and the Impact of Expanded Replay Ejections are a fascinating part of baseball and some have led to memorable confrontations, several of which are readily accessible in various electronic archives. Perhaps surprisingly, reliable information on ejections has been available only sporadically and there are many conflicting numbers in both print and on-line for even the most basic data such as the number of times a given player, manager or umpire was involved. The first comprehensive compilation of ejection data was carried out over many years by the late Doug Pappas, a tireless researcher in many areas of baseball, including economic analyses of the game. He not only amassed the details of over 11,000 ejections, he also lobbied intensely to have ejection information become a standard part of the daily box scores. He was successful in that effort and we have him to thank for something we now take for granted. After Doug’s passing, his ejection files made their way to Retrosheet where they were maintained and updated by the late David Vincent who expanded the database to over 15,000 events. In 2015, David used the expanded data in the Retrosheet files as the basis for an article which provided some fine background on the history of ejections along with many interesting anecdotes about especially unusual occurrences ((https://www.retrosheet.org/Research/VincentD/EjectionsHistory.pdf). Among other things, David noted that ejections only began in 1889 after a rule change giving umpires the authority to remove players, managers, and coaches as necessary. Prior to that time, offensive actions could only be punished by monetary fines. -

Neal lll | Star Tribune | September 22, 2016 When a team is having a season like the Twins are, someone has to be held accountable. The Twins are closing in on 100 losses for only the second time in franchise history and have a chance to tie or pass the 102-loss 1982 team. Attendance is not expected to top 2 million for the first time in Target Field history. While the club announced that manager Paul Molitor will return for 2017, the same has not been said for any of the coaches. With all the coaches’ contracts set to expire Oct. 31, the expectation is that changes are coming. What’s not clear is who will make the changes. -

Super-Senior Players Still Got Game?
Super-senior players still got game? Part 1, The National League Squad January 1, 2013 By George Vrechek Collectors have a natural penchant for organizing their collections. As youngsters we may have sorted our cards by number or favorite players. The kids on my block in the 50s played baseball dice games with their cards. Snake eyes, or a one and a one, was a homerun whether Ted Williams was batting or Ted Abernathy. Organizing the teams While the game didn’t make any statistical sense, it did make sense to us to have your “singles” organized by team, all ready to go for the dice games. The teams were kept current by checking the daily sports section for player transactions. If Enos Slaughter got traded to the Yankees, his card was promptly removed from the St. Louis Cardinals’ stack and moved to the Yanks. Sometimes we created cards for rookies not yet appearing on their own card or put the right uniforms on traded players by doctoring a duplicate of a similar-looking player. Minor leaguers, retirees, and deceased If a player went back to the minors, he went into a stack at the back of my card box. If I knew he had retired, he went into another stack. There weren’t too many deceased player cards, but they may have had their own section as well. Had I continued organizing and updating my cards from the 50s, I would now have no one with any team (unless you count those employed as goodwill ambassadors or spring training coaches).
