The transformation of the traditional detective story into a modern crime novel Pro Gradu –tutkielma Englannin kieli Toukokuu 2008 96 sivua + 2 liitettä Rikoskirjallisuus tuntuu viettävän uutta kultakauttaan. Niin myytyjen kuin lainattujenkin kirjojen määrästä huomattava osuus on rikoskirjallisuutta, tuttavallisemmin sanottuna dekkareita. Uudet dekkarit sekä dekkarikirjailijat saavat myös hyvin tilaa lehtien kirjallisuuspalstoilla. Uusia tulokkaita tähän genreen on alkanut löytyä yllättävistäkin maista, Afrikkaa myöten. Aiemmin roskakirjallisuutenakin pidetty rikoskirjallisuus on muuttunut hyväksyttäväksi harrastusmuodoksi: enää ei tarvitse häpeillen tunnustaa ahmivansa dekkareita työmatkoilla ja kesälomilla. Rikoskirjallisuus on otettu myös yliopistojen lukusuunnitelmiin muiden kirjallisuuden lajien rinnalle. Suomessa suosiosta kertoo myös perustetut dekkariseura ja –kirjasto ja aiheeseen liittyvät tapahtumat, kuten Dekkaripäivät. Yksi syy suureen suosioon lienee myös kirjojen pohjalta tehdyissä laadukkaissa tv-sarjoissa. Niin sanottuna rikoskirjallisuuden kulta-aikana pidetään maailmansotien välistä aikaa, karkeasti ottaen 1920–30 –lukuja. Tuon ajan dekkareita luetaan yhä innokkaasti, mutta sen jälkeiset vuodet ovat tuoneet rikoskirjallisuuteen myös uusia piirteitä. Onkin mielenkiintoista tarkastella, onko kyse enää ollenkaan samasta asiasta, kun vertaillaan kulta-ajan dekkareita ja nykyaikaisia psykologisia rikosromaaneja. Julian Symons on laatinut kirjassaan Bloody Murder (1985) listan niistä ominaisuuksista, joiden avulla vertailua voidaan tehdä. Tässä tutkielmassa käyn aluksi läpi miten rikoskirjallisuutta on yritetty hahmottaa ja luokitella ja mitkä ovat sen rakenne ja erityispiirteet. Sen jälkeen käsittelen rikoskirjallisuutta vastaan esitettyä kritiikkiä sekä puoltavia kannanottoja. Sitten hahmotan rikoskirjallisuuden alkutaivalta, näkemyksestä riippuen se alkaa joko raamatullisista kertomuksista tai sitten eurooppalaisen poliisitoiminnan perustamisen ajoilta. Seuraavana tarkastelen lähemmin Symonsin luokittelua ja analysoin sen pohjalta kaksi kirjaa: Agatha Christien The Mysterious Affair at Styles joka on kirjoitettu vuonna 1920 sekä Ruth Rendellin The Lake of Darkness vuodelta 1980.     “I am just a Policeman”: The Case of Carlo Lucarelli’s and Maurizio de Giovanni’s Historical Crime Novels Set During Fascism Barbara Pezzotti Summary: This article analyzes two successful Italian novels set during the Ventennio and the Second World War, namely Carlo Lucarelli’s Carta bianca (1990) and Maurizio De Giovanni’s Per mano mia (2011). It shows how Lucarelli confronts the troubling adherence to Fascism through a novel in which investigations are continually hampered by overpowering political forces. By contrast, in spite of expressing an anti-Fascist view, De Giovanni’s novel ends up providing a sanitized version of the Ventennio that allows the protagonist to fulfil his role as a policeman without outward contradictions. By mixing crime fiction and history, Lucarelli intervenes in the revisionist debate of the 1980s and 1990s by attacking the new mythology of the innocent Fascist. Twenty years later, following years of Berlusconi’s propaganda, De Giovanni waters down the hybridization of crime fiction and history with the insertion of romance and the supernatural in order to provide entertaining stories and attract a large audience. In the final analysis, from being functional to political and social criticism in Lucarelli’s series, the fruitful hybridization of crime fiction and history has turned into a mirror of the political and historical de-awareness of Italian society of the 2000s in De Giovanni’s series. This article analyzes two successful Italian novels set during the Fascist period or Ventennio (1922–1943) and the Second World War, namely Carlo Lucarelli’s Carta bianca (1990; translated as Carte Blanche in 2006), featuring Inspector De Luca as the main protagonist, and Maurizio De Giovanni’s Per mano mia (2011; By My Hand, 2014), with Inspector Ricciardi as the police detective.

In this particular collection, the stories are linked together by the characters, centered on two astute detectives and a collection of their family and friends. Quicksolve is a respected detective who methodically puts the clues together and arrives at the answer, and Detective Elliot Savant is a more eccentric fellow who seems to have his mind on everything at once, but uses his attention Crime Scene Whodunits detail to solve crimes. Some of the stories also revolve around Crime Scene Whodunits, Dr. Quicksolve's son. With these capable sleuths leading the way, the reader can solve mysteries like who is stalking Lucy Looker, who threatened the convenience store clerk with a knife and then ran away, and whether the horse really stampeded a famous singer to death or it was murder. Each of the twenty-two compact mysteries are three to four pages long, accompanied with illustrations. I enjoyed perusing these mysteries. Some of them are very simple for folk who read and watch mysteries, and some are more difficult to solve. A few of them were built around inferences that I didn't think the story justified, but most of the solutions made sense. The writing level of the book is suitable for younger readers, but some of the content is not, with murders and stabbings and people beat to death - I'm not sure the author had a solid fix on his intended audience.

    101 Defining Detective Fiction in Interwar Britain Victoria Stewart University of Leicester In an autobiographical anecdote, the British novelist Jeanette Winterson describes how she was awakened to literature after being sent to the public library to collect some books for her adoptive mother, who, apart from religious tracts, read only detective fiction: [O]n the list was Murder in the Cathedral by T. S. Eliot. [Mrs Winterson] thought it was a bloody saga of homicidal monks. I opened it–it looked a bit short for a mystery story–and sometimes library books had pages missing. I hadn’t heard of T. S. Eliot. I opened it, and . read . and I started to cry. Readers looked up reproachfully, and the Librarian reprimanded me, because in those days you weren’t even allowed to sneeze in a library, and so I took the book outside and read it all the way through, sitting on the steps in the usual northern gale. The unfamiliar and beautiful play made things bearable that day. This story is framed as, in part, a paean to Britain’s continually under-threat public library services, a reminder that they are not just the providers of a “weekly haul” of detective stories for readers like Mrs Winterson (Winterson), but can also introduce a literature-deprived youngster like Jeanette to high culture. In this story, the joke is on Mrs Winterson for her mistake; her desire for escapism inadvertently provides a different sort of escape for her daughter. What has to be omitted in this tale of the opening up of the world of “proper” literature to the young Winterson is the extent to which Eliot himself, especially during the 1920s, engaged with the kind of writing that Mrs Winterson enjoys: the title of Murder in the Cathedral is a not unknowing reference to similarly-named 102 THE SPACE BETWEEN detective novels of the period (Chinitz, T.
