We broadened the theme to encom- pass issues of globalization and the indigenization of knowledge debates and, in addition to the five original panelists who presented at that conference (Nelson, Rouse, Abaza, Al-Ali, El-Kholy), we in- vited six additional scholars (Didier, Marfleet, Asdar Ali, Häusermann Fábos, Kuppinger, Tabishat) all with theoretical interest in and research experience on issues of globalization / localization in Egypt. The title Situating Globalization: Views from Egypt was chosen pre- cisely to reflect the fact that not only did we all meet each other in Egypt but also because the many dialogues and debates we engaged in with each other catalyzed much of the original research reflected in this book. All authors have written original papers each of which explores a particular dimension of the indigenization of knowledge debate emerging from the intersection of local experience with the broader processes of globalization – one of the most timely and relevant issues that is being debated in both the North and South. The range of perspectives and original materials dealt with by each author highlights the renewed urgency of the struggle for cultural autonomy and voice within the context of the globalization process. In other words each paper explores how the various processes at both the local and global level intersect to create new discourses and debates around the “indigenization of knowledge”. This book is a contribution in that direction. However, we would not have been able to complete this project without the support and commitment of a number of individuals and institutions. These are both real and imaginary (i. e. symbolic and metaphoric), hegemonic and counter hegemonic. Among those real borders are spatial ones that determine individuals’ and commu- nities’ everyday location and place in the world – these include bor- ders / boundaries of class, gender, territory, and language(s). Each of these separations in turn has embedded in it, and rests on con- structions of ‘imaginary’ borders and boundaries – for instance the roles ascribed to women, the permissions and opportunities that stem from class and spatial / territorial location. In other words the real and imaginary do not exist as two disparate entities but are inextricably linked to each other in a dialectical move that simultaneously enables and disables movement and action. And it is this circular yet not tautological relation that defines the dilemmas and the promise of globalization. Until recently, three elements dominated thinking and writing on globalization: first, the newness of the phenomenon. Globalization was thus represented as a radical departure from the colonial and early post-colonial period. Second and in relation to the first, globalization was envisioned as a homogenizing process, one which threatened to engulf the local and overcome it. Implicit in such thinking is the notion that movement emanates from the north to the south; and furthermore, that the south is helpless in the face of the overwhelming power that still accrues and rests in the advanced capitalist world. The turning point in the view of many progressives and conservatives alike, was the decline and collapse of the Soviet Union, and the emergence of a ‘new’ world order. The struggle therefore was posited as consisting of a dialectic encounter between hegemonic forces of globalization and ‘indigenous’ forces of resistance. Current re-visioning of globalization challenges all these supposi- tions. For those of us born in the ‘South’, globalization is nothing new. It is a new form of an on-going process that took inception during the heyday of colonialism. It might serve as a descriptive term to articulate the current historical period, but it remains theoretically problematic and imprecise. While theoretically globalization is often explained in terms of time-space compression, we feel bound to reiterate, borrow- ing from Doreen Massey’s Space, Place and Gender (1994: 147), the extent to which such a conceptualization represents the coming home of capital’s outward spread on localities in the core. She states: The sense of dislocation which some might feel at the sight of a once well- known local street now lined with a succession of cultural imports … must have been felt for centuries, though from a very different point of view, by colonized peoples all over the world as they watched the importation, maybe even used, the products of, first, European colonization, maybe British …, later U. S., as they learned to eat wheat instead of rice or corn, to drink Coca Cola, just as today we try out enchiladas. Moreover, as well as querying the enthnocentricity of the idea of time-space compression and its current acceleration, we also need to ask about its causes: what is it that determines our degrees of mobility, that influences the sense we have of space and place? Time-space compression refers to movement and communication across space, to the geographical stretching out of social rela- tions, and to our experience of all of this. The usual interpretation is that it results overwhelmingly from the action of capital, and from its currently in- creasing internationalization … . But surely this is insufficient. Among the many other things which clearly influence that experience, there are, for instance, ‘race’ and gender … . In other words, and most broadly, time-space compression needs differentiating socially. This is not just a moral or political point about inequality; it is also a conceptual point.

Introduction following the large-scale popular uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, Egypt witnessed a polar- ization between Islamist and secular nationalist forces. Ultimately, this contentious dynamic culminated in the military toppling of the country’s first democratically elected post-revolution president, Mohamed Morsi of the Islamist movement al-Ikhwan al-Muslimun, better known in English as the Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan will be used throughout this book). As soon as it took power, the new military-dominated administration led by Abdel Fattah al-Sisi undertook a campaign of repression, violently breaking up Ikhwan protests, killing a few thousand and arresting tens of thousands more. Remarkably, it did so with considerable support from nation- alist secularists and revolutionaries who had earlier protested in their millions against Morsi’s tenure and who had initially taken to the streets to denounce the tradition of regime-led oppression in their country. The starting point of this investigation is the failure of Egypt’s parties to develop into politically-relevant organisations with strong constituency support in society. What we find instead are parties that - since the inception of multipartism in 1977 - remain characterised by their marginal role within the polity and politics of the state, that are little entrenched in society and that expose an underdeveloped and oftentimes fragmented internal structure. What is more, not only have these parties remained persistently weak, but since the early 1990s they experienced a further weakening of their position in the Egyptian polity.

    Chapter Eleven THE SUPPRESSION of the Muslim Brotherhood had freed Egypt from terrorism, but had not removed the causes of social unrest. Return to normal life brought conditions in which reform might have at least delayed, if not prevented, the fall of the old regime. But this last chance was thrown away. 'The year 1949 was a year of depression and weari- ness, in which the only signs of life were the secret activities. Egypt was at a Low ebb, but destiny was knocking at the door. Farouk was in a difficult situation, for he realized that he could not continue to rule without the support of a popular party. In spite of his strong dislike of Nahas Pasha, and the certainty that an election would mean a crushing majority for the Wafd, Farouk resolved to go to the country. In July, Hussein Sirry succeeded Abdul Hadi, and formed a coalition government with the Wafd, www.anwarsadat.orgto prepare for the general election. The government was unable to reach agreement about the division of the country into electoral districts, and in December Sirry was forced to resign in order to form a neutral cabinet composed of independents. It was a sign of the times that the Wafd election campaign stressed the social question, promising economic reforms, a reduction in the cost of living, a curtailment of state expenditure and waste, and other promises which were never kept. The election took place in January, 1955, and more than two-thirds of the seats went to the Wafd. Nahas Pasha formed a cabinet composed entirely of Wafdists, and the classic duel between the King and the Wafd began again.

This ethnographic study is an engagement with these new revolutionary negotiations on the part of the largest Protestant congregation in the Middle East. Using participant observation, focus groups, and interviews this research seeks to elucidate the ways that youth and leaders utilized institutionalized discourse, religious imagery, and relational networks in order to carve out a place in the Egyptian public sphere regarding public religion, national belonging, and the ideal citizen. Broadly this research seeks to understand how Evangelical Egyptians at KDEC navigated their colonial heritage and transnational character even as their leadership sought to ground the congregation in the Egyptian nation-state and in the emerging post-revolutionary political scene. I argue that these negotiations were built upon powerful paradoxes concerning liberal politics, secularism, and private versus public religion, which often implicated Evangelicals in the same questions being raised more broadly in the Egyptian political sphere concerning Islamist politics and religious minorities.

Nachdem bereits in der ersten Runde die allein regierende NDP nur auf ein Drittel der Stimmen kam und sich für sie ein Wahldisaster abzeichnete, wurde in der zweiten und dritten Runde den Anhängern der Opposition der Zugang zu den Wahllokalen, teilweise unter Einsatz massiver Gewalt, weitgehend verwehrt. Die Mehrzahl der unabhängigen Kandidaten, die einen Sitz gewonnen hatten, schloß sich umgehend der NDP an, wodurch die NDP mit 388 Sitzen einen klaren Wahlsieg errang. Überraschend gewannen die Islamisten als Unabhängige 19 von insgesamt 444 Sitzen. Das Verständnis von Opposition in arabischen Staaten Die im Oktober und November 2000 in Ägypten abgehaltenen Parlamentswahlen geben den Anlaß, grundsätzlich die Frage nach der Bedeutung von Wahlen und Parteien in arabischen Staaten aufzuwerfen1. Wahlen setzen allerdings voraus, daß es echte Alternativen gibt: zwischen einer Regierungspartei oder –koalition, die vom Wähler bestätigt oder durch Oppositionsparteien abgelöst wird, wie dies in den Demokratien westlicher Prägung regelmäßig der Fall ist. Hazrat e Aqdas Shah Saeed Ahmed Raipuri was born in Gumthala in district Karnaal in January 1926 in the home of a great saintly figure Hazrat e Aqdas Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz Raipuri. He was named âœSaeed Ahmedâ by Hazrat e Aqdas Maulana Shah Abdul Qadir Raipuri. When he was only five years of age, his mother passed away.Hazrat e Aqdas used to say to us âœWhat if I lost my motherâ™s lap, I was instead rewarded by Allah the lap of a khanquah.â After that his mornings and evenings were spent in the service of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdul Qadir Raipuri. He got a chance to serve Khanquahâ™s guests and was Shah Saeed Ahmed Raipuri, the fourth Sheikh after Abdul Rahim, replicated it in Lahore by the name of Idara Rahimia Ulum-i-Qurania in 2001.
