Gerber This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707–1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

All rights reserved. —The Family House of Study— Examining the Parashat HaShavuah by Thematic Analysis Welcome to Mishpachah Beit Midrash, the Family House of Study. Each Shabbat1 we gather in our home and study the Scriptures, specifically the Torah.2 It’s a fun time of receiving revelation from the Ruach HaKodesh3. Everyone joins in—adults and children—as we follow the Parashat HaShavuah4 schedule. We devote ourselves to studying the Torah because the Torah is the foundation for all of Scripture. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the Torah will help us more fully understand the rest of the Tanakh5 and the Brit Chadasha.6 Furthermore, as Yeshua stated Himself, the Torah teaches about Him. So we study the Torah in order to be drawn closer to Yeshua, the goal of the Torah. As believers in the Messiah we have discovered the richness of the wisdom of the sages of Israel. These men, who devoted themselves to the study of the Torah, have left us a rich heritage. Part of that heritage is a unique method of learning and interpreting the Scriptures. It’s called thematic analysis. In thematic analysis we search for the underlying theme/topic of each passage of Scripture. By studying Scriptures related by a common theme, line upon line and precept upon precept, the Scriptures open up to us in a unique manner that is clearly inspired by the Ruach HaKodesh. -

All three are derived from texts believed to be revealed by God Himself. Orthodox Judaism claims that God has said everything that needs to be said to humankind—all that remains is to interpret it generation by generation. Historic Christianity roots itself in “God-breathed scriptures” that are “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” Islam’s Qur’an is held to be a perfect reflection of the ‘Umm al-Kitab – the “mother of Books” that exists with Allah Himself. -

THE COVENANT: A Lenten Journey Curriculum THE PRIESTLY COVENANT – Session Five Leader’s Opening Remarks Our covenant journey has taken us to Eden, where a broken promise activates the genesis of redemption. Next, we went by boat with Noah, where God re-created the world as the stage upon which the story of God’s grace and redemption would play out. Then despite Abraham and Sarah’s shortcomings, God used them to secure the innumerable seed of blessing that God had in store for the world. Last week, we made a turn as we Laws, or standards that God would set to define how one should live in relationship with God and with others. 57 THE COVENANT: A Lenten Journey Curriculum Today, we will look again at Moses and this time, also his brother, Aaron, his nephew, Eleazar, and Eleazar’s son, Phinehas. This journey will reveal the importance of succession. The priestly covenant is a covenant of peace. But it starts out as anything but peaceful… Remember Moses’ reluctance to do what God had for him? He stuttered, and insisted that he wasn’t capable of doing all that God was calling him to do. So, God relented and gave Moses his brother, Aaron as an assurance that Moses had all that was needed to help free the Israelites from Pharaoh. A series of plagues and the death of Pharaoh’s son later, and Moses, Aaron, and all of the Israelites, crossed the Red Sea, and the enemy was defeated! But it still was not peaceful! 58 THE COVENANT: A Lenten Journey Curriculum The Israelites received the law, but the idolatry of Israel angered God and God denied the Israelites the peace that God had for them. -

The project considers the different ways in which Biblical writers and interpreters have remembered the Ark as a “real thing,” forming it, mobilizing it, and making meaning with it—largely in its absence after its likely loss in the 6th century BCE. From Exodus to Chronicles and in works of biblical interpretation through the Mishnah, this project explores how these writers reimagine the Ark to craft visions for their people’s future through their people’s past. The project is structured around five interrelated case studies from the Ark’s mnemohistory, considering different dimensions of cultural memory’s entanglement in material culture. Each case study draws upon and enriches text-, source-, and redaction-critical approaches, investigating the growth and reshaping of biblical writings as creative memory work. -

Exodus 20: 1-17 March 7, 2021 – Lent 3 Stacy Carlson Mystery and Meaning in Stone Good morning everyone. No matter what tradition we come from, most of us probably know this passage from Exodus, at least as the headline we call the Ten Commandments. These are ten rules or laws for how we should behave. They seem especially important during Lent, don't they? Yes, but perhaps not in the way we might think, because when a story is familiar, sometimes it doesn’t seem as meaningful the second and third time around as it was the first. We think we have learned all there is to know. So it might be with the Ten Commandments. But today, let’s try to look at them differently. One way is to think more about the stone tablets. Were they gray? Brown? Were they red clay? How much did they weigh? Did God chisel them letter by letter, or in a big flash all at once? Do we know if the commandments were divided equally – five and five -- between the tablets? And don't we wonder what the Israelites thought when Moses came down carrying stone tablets from a mountain shrouded in clouds, but also bursting with thunder and fire? Even if we knew the answers to all those questions, what new lesson can we learn today? I believe there is still mystery and meaning in these two stone tablets. What if we imagine the world after the pandemic? Imagine we're gathered outside a Metro station in DC. Let's say Dupont Circle. -

Notes on Exodus 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE The Hebrew title of this book (we'elleh shemot) originated from the ancient practice of naming a Bible book after its first word or words. "Now these are the names of" is the translation of the first two Hebrew words. "The Hebrew title of the Book of Exodus, therefore, was to remind us that Exodus is the sequel to Genesis and that one of its purposes is to continue the history of God's people as well as elaborate further on the great themes so nobly introduced in Genesis."1 Exodus cannot stand alone, in the sense that the book would not make much sense without Genesis. The very first word of the book, translated "now," is a conjunction that means "and." The English title "Exodus" is a transliteration of the Greek word exodus, from the Septuagint translation, meaning "exit," "way out," or "departure." The Septuagint translators gave the book this title because of the major event in it, namely, the Israelites' departure from Egypt. "The exodus is the most significant historical and theological event of the Old Testament …"2 DATE AND WRITER Moses, who lived from about 1525 to 1405 B.C., wrote Exodus (17:14; 24:4; 34:4, 27-29). The characters or events in these new compositions are developed in various ways: filling in gaps in the biblical account, offering explanations for difficult passages, or simply adding details to the lives of biblical personages to make them fuller and more interesting characters. For example, the work known as Joseph andAseneth focuses on the biblical character Aseneth, the Egyptian wife of Joseph, mentioned only briefly in Gen 41:45, 50.' This work attempts to explain, among other things, how Joseph, the righteous son of Jacob, contracted an exogamous marriage with the daughter of an Egyptian priest. -

Thursday, September 17, 2020 This Is How We Our Battles Text: Exodus 17:8-15 The Amalekites Defeated 8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” 10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up— one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against[c] the throne of the Lord,[d] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.” 1 Thursday, September 17, 2020 Battles can be won or lost based on how they’re fought.
