Y,[(K: 94:327](497.13 Kop'lyna:450.341 )" 15" Oliver JENS SCHMITT Institut ftir Osteuropaische Geschichte Wien Austria MICRO-HISTORY AND LEBENSWELTEN AS APPROACHES TO LATE MEDIEVAL DALMATIAN HISTORY. A CASE STUDY OF KORCULN Abstract: The article discusses micro-history as approach for analyzing the question of Venetian rule in Late Medieval Dalmatia. Thick description of local conflicts on the island of Korcula reveals a complex network of personal economic and political dependencies and demonstrates the limits ofVenetian power. Key Words: Dalmatia, Venice, Korcula, Micro-History While most medievalists dealing with Late Medieval Southeastern Europe are trained to analyze in detail a rather restricted number of docu ments which were actually produced in the region (this observation does, obviously, not concern Dubrovnik), relying usually heavily on a documentation from outside the area or even stemming from later periods, the archive of Korcula represents the very rare example of an almost complete source collection of a minor island at the crossroads of the Balkans and the East Mediterranean world. This paper discusses the question whether some methods of the so called New Cultural History help analyzing the Korculan society of the 15th century. It is divided into several steps: 1. It will try to give a short methodological overview of the methods in question 2. It will describe in a few words the political and social framework of the Korculan society at the eve of the Venetian domination ' This article was read as a paper at the University of Belgrade in October 2009; it was probably one of the last lectures Sima Cirkovic could attend.

Źróbek (ed.). GIS for Geoscientists. Croatian Information Technology Association – GIS Forum, University of Silesia, Zagreb, 143-158. THE LANDSCAPE CHANGES IN CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY IN ROMAN DALMATIA (territory of today Dubrovnik-Neretva County - Croatia) Vlasta Begović Institut za arheologiju Gajeva 32, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia Ivančica Schrunk University of St. Thomas St. Paul, Minnesota 55105, USA Davorin Kereković, GIS Forum Ilica 191 e, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia Abstract In the course of the ongoing research project “Archaeological Topography of Croatia in Classical Antiquity” the application of a new GIS procedure made it possible to make reconstructions of some Roman sites and past landscapes (landscape in classical antiquity) on the territory of today Dubrovnik- Neretva County (Croatia). The GIS approach to the study of changes in historical landscapes indicated that the greatest transformation of the landscape occurred in the Roman period. The Roman beginning of the new settlements has the roots in commercial and strategic needs of the expanding power in the eastern Adriatic territory such as in the exploitation of the local resources. The procese of Romanization divided that territory into the colonies of Narona and Epidaur two great centres with their ager. The most significant legacy was the division of fertile lands in Konavle, Ston field, Pelješac peninsula, Neretva and Korčula field between colonies and villa’s propertes. Building of the roads and naval bases was the part of the plan of Roman domination and pacification of the territory.

With Smith Lecturer BOSILJKA GLUMAC FABLED SARAJEVO and THE GLORIOUS COAST of CROATIA & MONTENEGRO Aboard the All-Suite, 50-Cabin Corinthian June 23 – July 4, 2014 EARLY REGISTRATION SAVINGS OF $1,000 PER CABIN Dear Alumnae and Friends, There are certain journeys that are so unique, they capture the imagination of travelers. The journey described in this brochure, which combines an exploration of Sarajevo—one of the most intriguing cities in all of Europe—with a cruise along the sublime coast of Croatia and Montenegro, is certainly one such journey. Sarajevo, where our adventure begins, is one of Europe’s most fascinating and loveliest cities. Yet few travelers have visited this remarkable European capital. Lying between gently sloping hills in a splendid river valley, Sarajevo is a city with a rich, vibrant culture that draws upon the traditions of Christians, Jews, and Muslims who have coexisted and intermingled here for centuries. Noted for its scenic setting and its unusual historical and cultural monuments, Sarajevo is also known for an architecture that blends elegant modern boulevards with the narrow lanes and buildings of the Old Town, where the markets will remind you of the souks of the Middle East. June 23 – July 4, 2014 As we travel from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik we will pass through glorious scenery to visit Mostar, where the buildings and its landmark stone bridge—set majestically along the banks of the pale-green Neretva River—reveal both oriental traditions and western influences. In beautiful Dubrovnik, known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” you will enjoy a full day exploring one of the finest medieval cities in Europe, where the streets are lined with splendid examples of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque architecture, before boarding the 100-guest Corinthian—the perfect vessel for navigating the islands and inlets and bays of Croatia’s and Montenegro’s famed coastline.
