U. S. Astronaut Hall of Fame® To Welcome the First Class of the New Decade Veteran NASA Astronauts Michael E. Lopez-Alegria, Pamela A. Melroy and Scott Kelly to be Inducted at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, May 2020 CAPE CANAVERAL (January 21, 2020) – KENNEDY SPACE CENTER – Veteran astronauts Michael E. Lopez-Alegria, Pamela A. Melroy and Scott Kelly, who have all demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in furthering NASA’s mission of exploration and discovery, have been selected to receive one of the highest honors in their industry. This May, they will be inducted into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame® at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, and will join the just 99 individuals who currently hold that esteemed honor as the “First Class of the New Decade.” An official ceremony and gala will take place at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on May 16, 2020. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the majestic Space Shuttle Atlantis®, the ceremony will be attended by a roster of astronaut legends. Later that evening, the newest Hall of Fame members will be celebrated at a black-tie event hosted by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. “As we enter the year 2020, we are particularly excited to welcome these accomplished astronauts into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame,” said Curt Brown, space shuttle astronaut and board chairman of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, which oversees the selection process. “They exemplify bravery, dedication and passion and their hard work has paved the way for what promises to be an unprecedented new decade of space exploration and interplanetary travel.” Lopez-Alegria, Melroy and Kelly all have had distinguished careers, centered around their love of space and science: Capt. -

The arrival of Columbus marked a notable shift in European research potential with the variety of research facilities in Columbus providing the means to undertake longer-term European research activities on the Station and also providing Europe with its full quota of research rights on the ISS. This research potential has been further increased over the past few years with the increase to a six-member crew. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics, a Master of Science and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Space Physics from Rice University. Walker began her professional career at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in 1987 as a Robotics Flight Controller for the Space Shuttle Program. In 2010, she served as Flight Engineer for Expedition 24/25, a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station that lasted 163 days. Walker most recently served as mission specialist on the on the Crew-1 SpaceX Crew Dragon, named Resilience, which landed May 2, 2021. She also served as Flight Engineer on the International Space Station for Expedition 64. Personal Data: Born June 4, 1965 in Houston, Texas. Married to astronaut Andy Thomas. Recreational interests include cooking, running, weight training, camping and travel. Her mother, Sherry Walker, resides in Houston, Texas. Her father, Robert Walker, is deceased. Melroy and Scott Kelly, will be inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame® at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on November 13, 2021. The much-anticipated ceremony will honor these three extraordinary veterans who have all demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in furthering NASA’s mission of exploration and discovery and have been selected to receive one of the highest honors in their industry. Postponed from the original date due to the pandemic, the November ceremony will see Lopez- Alegria, Melroy and Kelly join the 99 individuals who already hold the esteemed title of U.S. Hall of Fame Astronaut. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the majestic Space Shuttle Atlantis®, the official ceremony will take place at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on November 13, 2021, and will be attended by an impressive array of legendary astronauts. The completion of the ISS on-orbit assembly allows for a focus on the multifaceted purpose of the ISS, one of scientific research, technology development, exploration and education. As a National Laboratory, the ISS will provide opportunities beyond NASA to academia, commercial entities and other government agencies to pursue their research and development needs in science, technology development and education. Space station on to the 2nd decade 29 October 2010 They blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Oct. 31, 2000, and docked with the station two days later. From the moment the hatch of their Soyuz spacecraft opened and they entered the fledgling space station, there have been people living and working in orbit, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. "As we look forward to the next 10 years, taking us through 2020, the space station will serve many roles," said Mike Suffredini, International Space Station program manager since 2005. "With its permanent human presence, it will serve as a foothold for long-term exploration into space, being an integral part of testing human endurance, equipment reliability and processes essential for space exploration." Before his launch, Expedition 1 commander NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson, Expedition 24 Shepherd explained that the station "gives us flight engineer, replaces a dewar tray containing unique access to the space environment where we biological samples in the Minus Eighty Degree hope we can do very interesting and productive Laboratory Freezer for ISS in the Kibo laboratory of the research, but it really means we [will] develop a lot International Space Station.
