Expedition 321 Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Self-Guided Field Trip Facilitator’s Guide BEFORE YOU ARRIVE: Spend some time pre-teaching the history and science concepts for the exhibits you will be visiting. More information is available at www.nasa.gov (click on the “For Educators” tab) and www.kennedyspacecenter.com (click on the “Experience” tab). Make copies of the Expedition 321 Logbook for your students and chaperones. For a bifold booklet, print out the PDF file, make 2-sided copies (invert every other original when collating) and staple in the centerfold (set stapler to 5-1/2 inches). Assign students to teams and team positions. Ideally, there should be four students to a team; two or three teams can easily share one chaperone. Decide which activities you are going to explore. There are 20 tasks in the Expedition 321 Logbook, but it is unlikely that students will be able to complete all of these in a single day. WHEN YOU ARRIVE: If coming by bus, you will be dropped off and picked up in Parking Lot 4 near the main entrance. If coming by car, pay a parking fee for each vehicle. You may pick up your tickets at the Will Call / Group Sales window near the main gate. Have your reservation number as well as any required tax-exempt certificates. There will be a security check of your bags. No hard-sided coolers are permitted inside the complex. For guests requiring special assistance, wheelchairs are available for rent at Information Central. U. S. Astronaut Hall of Fame® To Welcome the First Class of the New Decade Veteran NASA Astronauts Michael E. Lopez-Alegria, Pamela A. Melroy and Scott Kelly to be Inducted at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, May 2020 CAPE CANAVERAL (January 21, 2020) – KENNEDY SPACE CENTER – Veteran astronauts Michael E. Lopez-Alegria, Pamela A. Melroy and Scott Kelly, who have all demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in furthering NASA’s mission of exploration and discovery, have been selected to receive one of the highest honors in their industry. This May, they will be inducted into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame® at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, and will join the just 99 individuals who currently hold that esteemed honor as the “First Class of the New Decade.” An official ceremony and gala will take place at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on May 16, 2020. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the majestic Space Shuttle Atlantis®, the ceremony will be attended by a roster of astronaut legends. Later that evening, the newest Hall of Fame members will be celebrated at a black-tie event hosted by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. “As we enter the year 2020, we are particularly excited to welcome these accomplished astronauts into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame,” said Curt Brown, space shuttle astronaut and board chairman of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, which oversees the selection process. “They exemplify bravery, dedication and passion and their hard work has paved the way for what promises to be an unprecedented new decade of space exploration and interplanetary travel.” Lopez-Alegria, Melroy and Kelly all have had distinguished careers, centered around their love of space and science: Capt. -

BIBLIOGRAPHIC ESSAY People make history; then, the history becomes documented through primary texts and official records. However, the history of Shuttle-Mir comes first from those who experienced it. This book presents the human side through a detailed chronology and background information. Much of the material was provided by the NASA Johnson Space Center Oral History Project for which dozens of Shuttle-Mir participants (see list below) offered their words, their stories, their memories. Historian Stephen Ambrose wrote in the introduction to his book, Citizen Soldiers, “Long ago my mentors … taught me to let my characters speak for themselves by quoting them liberally. They were there. I wasn't. They saw with their own eyes; they put their lives on the line. I didn't. They speak with an authenticity no one else can match. Their phrases, their word choices, their slang are unique — naturally enough, as their experiences were unique.” 1 Shuttle-Mir was likewise unique. And, its oral histories will continue through the years to illustrate the humanity and illuminate the importance of the Program. Also, this book reflects the changing of the times. The Internet came of age during the Shuttle-Mir Program, and many of the book’s sources reflect the Internet’s capabilities. For historical background, NASA history offices maintain an ever-growing library of electronic texts. NASA’s various Centers maintain Internet Web sites pertinent to their missions, such as the Shuttle launch records at Kennedy Space Center and human spaceflight information at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). During and after the Program, JSC hosted a Shuttle-Mir Web site that included weekly updates and interviews. -

Biographical Data Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center National Aeronautics and Houston, Texas 77058 Space Administration March 2018 MARY ELLEN WEBER, PH.D. NASA ASTRONAUT (FORMER) PERSONAL DATA: Dr. Weber was born in 1962 in Cleveland, Ohio. Bedford Heights, Ohio, is her hometown. She is married to Dr. Jerome Elkind, who is originally from Bayonne, New Jersey. She is an avid skydiver and golfer, and also enjoys scuba diving. Her mother, Joan Weber, currently resides in Mentor, Ohio. Her father, Andrew Weber, Jr., is deceased. EDUCATION: Graduated from Bedford High School in 1980; received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering (with honors) from Purdue University in 1984; received a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1988; and received a Master of Business Administration degree from Southern Methodist University in 2002. EXPERIENCE: During her undergraduate studies at Purdue, Dr. Weber was an engineering intern at Ohio Edison, Delco Electronics and 3M. Following this, in her doctoral research at Berkeley, she explored the physics of gas-phase chemical reactions involving silicon. She then joined Texas Instruments to research new processes for making computer chips. Texas Instruments assigned her to a consortium of semiconductor companies, SEMATECH, and subsequently, to Applied Materials, to create a revolutionary reactor for manufacturing next-generation chips. She has received one patent and published eight papers in scientific journals. Dr. Weber has logged nearly 5,000 skydives and is an active skydiver, with 13 silver and bronze medals to date at the U.S. National Skydiving Championships and a world record in 2002 for the largest freefall formation, with 300 skydivers. -

Aerospace engineering consists of aircraft, spacecraft and satellite design and construction. Aerospace engineers also test prototypes. A prototype is a new invention that needs to be tested. We chose this career because we love space and adventure! NASA The main United States aerospace engineering company is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, also known as NASA. This agency was created in 1958. NASA was the first space agency to get a human on the moon. Sent by NASA, Neil Armstrong, an astronaut and aeronautical engineer, was the first human to step on the moon in 1969. Now NASA is working on getting people back to the moon and going to Mars. Aircraft Aerospace engineering includes aircraft. There is one main difference between spacecraft and aircraft. Spacecraft are meant to break earth’s gravitational pull, where as aircraft are meant to stay in earth’s gravity. Aircraft also carry cargo and humans. The first airplane was created on December 17, 1903 by the Wright Brothers. Spacecraft Spacecraft are another part of aerospace engineering. There have been many space shuttles launched into orbit. Throughout time, rockets and space shuttles have evolved. Aerospace engineers have made rockets and shuttles much safer. Rockets and shuttles not only transport humans, but also cargo and rovers. Satellites The first satellite was developed by Russia and was named Sputnik1on October 4, 1957. Sputnik travelled at a speed of 18,000 miles per hour. It went around earth every 93 minutes. -
