ARIT-Ankara FY 06/07 Annual Report 1 ARIT-ANKARA Şehit Ersan Cad. 24/9 Çankaya-Ankara tel: (312) 427-2222 fax: 427-4979 e-mail: [email protected] ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2006- JUNE 30, 2007 I. TONI M. CROSS LIBRARY A. Visitors The library was visited 495 times by 142 visitors as compared with 616 visits by 217 users in the previous year. This is largely due to our move to a new location, which required the closure of the library from March 13 to April 24. February, the month before our move, was a particularly busy one with 81 visits. Other months of peak usage were December (63), and May (50). For more details about the new library space see p. 5, section IV. C. below. Ankara University continues to be the institution with the most usage of our library. ARIT-Ankara FY 06/07 Annual Report 2 B. Acquisitions The following statistics do not include the massive donations received in May, which are separately discussed below. The library acquired 89 monographs and 26 offprints, as compared to 130 and 76 respectively last FY. 45 monographs and 3 dissertations came as a gift; the remaining 41 monographs were purchased (12 from abroad and 29 locally.) The library received 98 issues of 48 journals, of which 21 issues of 10 journals were gifts. 56 issues of 30 titles were received through subscription. 16 issues of 7 journals were purchased. 15 newsletters and annual reports arrived as well. In addition the library received duplicates of 5 monographs. We wish to thank all the individuals and institutions, listed on p.16, who contributed to the Ankara Branch library during the FY 06/07. Those who wish to donate books must still contact Nancy Leinwand (ARIT-USA), who then arranges for the books to be sent to us. We hope that our APO mailing privileges will be reinstated in the future. C. Inventory & Cataloging This year we conducted our inventory only once during the FY. Despite not having magnetic strips in books to detect if they are being taken out of the building, we are fortunate that we have only 1 missing book (BERTHOLD, Richard M. Rhodes in the Hellenistic Age. London: Cornell University Press, 1984) from this past fiscal year. Books with worn bindings and in need of repair continue to be systematically mended by the librarian or sent to be bound/rebound. New books are covered with a protective book jacket by the librarian to ensure they will have a longer ‘shelf-life.’ Bookplates for donors were created and inserted into their respective volumes. New acquisitions continue to be recorded in our electronic catalog and this data is sent to the Digital Library for International Research (DLIR). Users can now access our holdings through the DLIR website, which is linked to the ARIT website. The records up to May 2005 are accessible through the DLIR. Our more recent acquisitions have not been processed by the DLIR. In September, we completed our contribution to the Middle East Research Journal (MERJ) project of DLIR: 12 journals (3111 pages) were scanned (Arkeoloji Dergisi, 6 volumes (1 – 6) (1991-1999) and Arkeoloji Sanat Tarihi Dergisi, 6 volumes (1-6) (1982-1992). These two journals are now accessible via the following links (http://www.localarchives.org/DLIR/Dergisi_meta.aspx) and (http://www.localarchives.org/DLIR/Tarihi_Dergisi_meta.aspx). We also began a new project of the DLIR, called Local Archives and Libraries project of the American Overseas Centers (LALORC), originally called the Local Libraries and Archives Project (LLAP). We will solicit local libraries and archives that could collaborate with the DLIR to enter descriptive records about their collections into an online survey form to help make available a description of their collections to international researchers (http://www.matrix.msu.edu/~lalorc/). A letter of support was written as part of ARIT’s major campaign to endow its library facilities and their maintenance as part of a National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) endowment challenge grant, which requires matching donations. Also, an appeal was made to the Chevron Corporation Office in Turkey to support this initiative. Donations: The Machteld J. Mellink (MJM) donation arrived by ship to Izmir on April 20th. We are grateful to the US Embassy and its Public Affairs Officers (James Moore and Dan Sreebny) for agreeing to help us get it through customs. The container arrived at the new location of ARIT- Ankara in early May. The cost of the shipment for the Ankara Center was about $4600. 18 new shelves and more card-catalog drawers were purchased to handle the new donation at a cost of ARIT-Ankara FY 06/07 Annual Report 3 about $6000. Over 6000 items arrived in over 300 boxes. About five thousand of these belong to the MJM donation, seven hundred to a donation by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA), several hundred from Bryn Mawr College, and tens of thousands of pages of resources on Vitruvius compiled as an archive donated by Robert M. Wilhelm of The Campanian Society. In one remarkable moment, the library holdings increased by almost a third from about 12,000 to 15,500 volumes. We are extremely grateful for these donations and to the anonymous donor who made the move to the new center possible, as well as to the memory of Machteld Mellink, whose legacy will benefit future scholarship for generations to come thanks to this grand bequest. The arrival of the donations would not have been possible without the hard work of our executive director, Nancy Leinwand, who collected the donations and arranged for their shipment. Fortunately, the MJM donation came with her bookshelves, which made it easier to process the books. We have temporarily put the books on her shelves in alphabetical order by author in the main reading room. They are now being systematically assessed before being cataloged into our inventory. Since most of her books include her notes, we are creating separate envelopes for each book and putting these notes in them so that users can have access to them as well. A nameplate was created specifically for all of the items of the MJM donation. An initial assessment of the MJM donation indicates that of the roughly 3600 monograph titles received, about a third (1000) are duplicates; many of the issues of the 50 journals received are duplicates (about 1000 issues); and over a thousand offprints have yet to be assessed. The MJM, ASCSA, and Bryn Mawr donations fill many of the missing parts of the Anatolian and Near Eastern sections and of the partial journal runs. II. CENTER A. Staff & Wages In July 2006, the wage of the admin. assistant was raised from $700 to $750, and the wage of the librarian from $700 to $800. Duygu Sapmaz was a new addition in FY 06/07 to the existing staff of Pelin Gürol (admin.assist.), Özlem Eser (librarian), and Elmas Demirel (housekeeper). She was hired in September to work for 2 days on Friends of ARIT activities and 3 days for the ARIT library at a wage of $550 a month ($250 paid by FARIT and $300 by ARIT). In January of 2007 the net monthly minimum wage per person was raised from 380 YTL to 403 YTL, an increase of about 6%, and the monthly minimum social security (SSK) premium was raised by 6% percent from 197 YTL to about 209YTL per person. In January 2007 the wages of the ARIT employees were adjusted for inflation and cost of living increases: admin.
