IDIBGI belongs to the Catalan Network of Research Centres of the Generalitat de Catalunya (CERCA). IDIBGI´s mission is to support and develop quality research in biomedical and health sciences, promoting its translation into everyday practice with the objective of responding to the health needs of the community. We aspire become a leading player in biomedical research by producing and transferring knowledge that has a significant impact on the health and quality of life of everybody in our society. IDIBGI is the umbrella organization for investigators from different institutions: the ICS - Dr.Josep Trueta University Hospital, the Health Care Institute (IAS), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), the Institute of Diagnostic Imaging (IDI) and the Institute of Primary Care (IDIAP Jordi Gol) and since 2016, the University of Girona (UdG) in those groups related to health and biomedical research. The activity of the IDIBGI’s investigators is organised in four main areas: cardiovascular diseases, inflammation and metabolism, neurosciences, and onco-hematology. In addition, there are associated groups from UdG, bringing together 28 research groups. In 2016, IDIBGI had a staff of 86 people and worked with about 250 investigators from the different collaborating institutions. In this same year, IDIBGI managed 49 national and international research projects, had more than 366 clinical research studies in progress, participated in different scientific networks, and was part of the biobank platform of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII). In the last three years, it has published 742 papers in international journals with an average impact factor of 4,22 and 51,89 % in the first quartile of the specialty. The combination of investigators with different expertise and backgrounds enables the creation of powerful synergies and the creation of multidisciplinary teams focused on the search for solutions to the main health problems and on training new professionals for the future. IDIBGI is well positioned to face new and future health challenges by undertaking innovative translational biomedical research in Girona. 6 ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC REPORT IDIBGI 2016 7 ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC In Spain, the media market structure is made up of very different media groups, making it necessary to identify and classify them in a clear and coherent manner. To do so, this article collects secondary information from media companies’ websites and from audience measurement institutions. Results identify 50 media groups with activity in the Spanish market. They are classified into three categories according to the type of outlet, including national, sectorial, and regional. The current structure is based on recent developments in the last four decades of democracy among newspapers, magazines, radio, television and digital media. Keywords: Media concentration; Spain; media groups; media structure; media history [es] Concentración mediática en España: grupos nacionales, sectoriales y regionales Resumen.

  • What Catalans Want
Introduction What Catalans Want What Catalans Want is a book that takes a concerned look at Catalonia at a time when – although many people are not yet fully conscious of the fact – the country’s political future as a Spanish autonomous region is for the first time being questioned since it came into being in 1980. It does so by talking to some of the country’s most representative personalities in various areas of public life and also to a small What Catalans Want but select group of foreigners living in Catalonia. The book’s aim is not so much to conduct a poll as Next new state in europe to discover what fuels the issues involved by asking what it is that is making many inhabitants of this small western European country feel as uncomfortable about forming part of Spain as they are comfortable about being in the European Union. A wide cross-section of Catalan men and women have thus been asked just what it is that is causing unrest and why things have come to a head so rapidly. Could the Catalan question be welling up into a political issue of the same order as Scotland’s or Flanders’? Toni Strubell Mercifully, there appears to be no danger that it will generate any form of violence. But one wonders whether democratic Europe can afford to overlook what is going on in Catalonia as it has done with conflicts affecting other areas of the continent. The people interviewed in this book have been picked for the interest what they have to say will doubtless have readers.

International Symposium on Online Journalism Austin, Texas – April 23-24, 2010 Comments in News, Democracy Booster or Journalistic Nightmare: Assessing the Quality and Dynamics of Citizen Debates in Catalan Online Newspapers Javier Díaz Noci1, David Domingo2, Pere Masip3, Josep Lluís Micó3, Carles Ruiz3 Comments in news is the most popular feature for audience participation in online news sites. For citizens, it is a very simple way to react to current events and discuss about them, right after reading the story. For journalists is a very comfortable way to open-up their websites to participation, as it frames the audience as audience and does not challenge the professional identity of journalism (Domingo et al., 2008; Hermida & Thurman, 2008). While the attitudes of journalists towards audience participation have been already researched in Catalonia (Masip & Micó, forthcoming), confirming the cautious and reluctant attitude found in other countries (Singer et al., forthcoming), there was no empirical evidence regarding the quality of the contributions of the audience, a crucial aspect to evaluate the significance of User Generated Content (UGC) to journalism. Professionals are usually worried about the hate- speech and lack of constructive discussions in news comments. This study was motivated by a query by the Consell de la Informació de Catalunya, the Catalan journalism ethical board, that felt that scholarly research could help in determining adequate guidelines to foster the quality of audience participation in online newspapers. This study takes a critical and normative standpoint regarding public debate in order to approach the analysis of comments in news. Beyond the hype of discourses welcoming Web 2.0 as the rebirth of direct democracy, we argue for a performative analysis of online conversations in order to assess the actual quality of the debates promoted by participatory journalism.
