2004 marks the 400th anniversary of the fi rst attempt at permanent French settlement in North America. In 1604, French soldier-courtier Pierre Dugua Sieur de Mons arrived in Acadie on the fl agship Bonne-Renommée. The ship’s company included Samuel de Champlain, a skilled mapmaker and chronicler. De Mons chose Île Sainte- Croix for settlement, an event which symbolizes the founding of Acadie. The island’s isolation and an unusually harsh winter severely tested the colonists. Almost half succumbed to scurvy. De Mons resolved to relocate his colony to a more favourable location across the at Port-Royal. Located at Bayside, near St. Andrews, this site overlooks Saint Croix Island.

6 7 Wind, Wood and Sail Exhibit This exhibit commemorates the national signifi cance of the 19th century shipbuilding industry in New Brunswick. The huge timber industry in was the principal factor behind the development of a very successful sailing-ship industry in Saint John, and throughout the Maritimes, between the 1820s and the early 1890s. Beaubears Island National Historic Site of Canada The Mi’kmaq used this island as a camp site for many centuries. Following the deportation of the in 1755, Charles des Champs de Boishébert brought hundreds of refugees to settle on this island. English settlement soon followed. The fort saw combat again during the American Revolution when it was attacked by rebel sympathizers. It later defended the area during the War of 1812. Activities Interpretation Interpretation programs are offered throughout the summer. Learn the secrets of the giant tides, sing along at a campfire or discover the park’s rich heritage at an evening program. Schedules are posted throughout the park. Hiking With 120 km of trails, hiking is one of the most popular activities at Fundy. You can experience cool, mossy valleys and evergreen-scented forests, travel along trails that lace the shores of the majestic Bay of Fundy, or discover one of the Park’s many beautiful waterfalls. Trails range from 0.5 km to 10 km and by following 50 km of linked trails, you can even complete the Fundy Circuit.

Located on New Brunswick’s central eastern shore, the Park stretches along the Acadian Coast. Kouchibouguac (pronounced koo- she-boogwack) boasts the warmest salt water north of Virginia. The Park is home to the endangered piping plover, and Tern Island is home to the second-largest tern colony in North America. Pitch your tent and take the family for a day-long adventure. Cycle along fantastic bicycle trails. Walk on endless stretches of beach and watch for grey seals resting on offshore sandbars.
