So with that introduction, we are pleased to announce that as of this issue, the gazette formerly known as AllAboutJazz-New York will now be called The New York City Jazz Record. It is a change that comes on the heels of our separation New York@Night last summer from the AllAboutJazz.com website. To emphasize that split, we felt 4 it was time to come out, as it were, with our own unique identity. So in that sense, a name is very important. But, echoing Shakespeare’s idea, the change in name Interview: Johnny Mandel will have no impact whatsoever on our continuing mission to explore new worlds 6 by Marcia Hillman and new civilizations...oh wait, wrong mission...to support the New York City and international jazz communities. If anything, the new name will afford us new Artist Feature: Elliott Sharp opportunities to accomplish that goal, whether it be in print or in a soon-to-be- 7 by Martin Longley expanded online presence. Jessica Molaskey Jessica Molaskey is a veteran of a dozen Broadway shows including the revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Sunday in the Park with George, which was nominated for nine Tony Awards. She has appeared in A Man of No Importance at Lincoln Center, Parade (directed by Hal Prince), Dream, Tommy, Crazy for You, Les Misérables, City of Angels, Chess, Cats and Oklahoma! She most recently played the role of Marie in The Encores critically acclaimed production of The Most Happy Fella at City Center. PamPurvis Story and photos by Tony Mottola Having A Ball he recent release party for Pam Purvis’s I Had a Ball CD at Cecil’s Jazz Club in West Orange was just that — T one big party — with everyone on hand having (what else?) a ball. There was so much kibitzing, schmoozing and chit-chatting among the crowd of musicians and civilians on hand for the Saturday night shows that there was only time for an abbreviated third set before last call and lights out. The evening’s first set, however, was full-sized and began with style, if without fanfare, as the I Had a Ball rhythm section of Brandon McCune, piano, Calvin Jones, bass and the CD’s producer and club owner Cecil Brooks on drums, quietly took the bandstand and slowly grooved their way into “Invitation,” eschewing the tune’s usual Latin beat for a super funky take. Woodwind master Bob Ackerman then joined the group and offered an airy version of Charles Lloyd’s “Forest Flower” on flute, and an original, “Blues for Cecil,” on sax. JOHN PIZZARELLI Biography
JOHN PIZZARELLI Biography John Pizzarelli has cultivated a winning international career by singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and by playing sublime and inventive guitar. Using greats like Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra and the songs of writers like Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen as touchstones, Pizzarelli is among the prime revivalists of the Great American Songbook, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing. Born on April 6, 1960, in Paterson, New Jersey, Pizzarelli has been playing guitar since age six, following in the tradition of his father, guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli. Hanging out with his father, he was exposed to all the great jazz music of the era, from Erroll Garner and Les Paul to Django Reinhardt. He began playing with his father at age 20, then went out on his own. Since 1992, the John Pizzarelli Trio has toured extensively. In 1993, they were honored to open for Frank Sinatra's international tour and then joined in the celebration for his 80th birthday at Carnegie Hall. Pizzarelli’s voice has continued to develop with time, displaying both charm and humor. He has recorded as a bandleader for RCA, Chesky, Stash and Novus, and in 1997 appeared in the Broadway musical Dream , a revue of Johnny Mercer songs. Along the way, Pizzarelli has earned rave reviews. “The John Pizzarelli Trio has never been tighter, and Pizzarelli himself has never been looser,” the Village Voice said of a recent New York show. “We can say we’re as lucky to listen to (Pizzarelli) as Nat Cole fans were in the years before he became a legend.” Pizzarelli was also named “Jazz Vocalist of the Year” by Swing Journal in their Readers Poll.
