4 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019 PRESIDENT’S REPORT It is with a sense of pride and satisfaction that I provide on behalf of the Board and management my second Annual Report. This year’s many accomplishments adds to our rich 114 year history of 161 premierships across all grades, 28 First Grade premierships - more than any other club - 254 Qld representatives including 26 Captains, 4 Australian Club Champions and we have had 87 Australian representatives across men’s and women’s including 13 National Team Captains.

We acknowledge and commend;

Our expanding activities and continued successes built on the work done by our selfless and hardworking players, volunteers and staff, along with the continued generous support and goodwill of our members, supporters and our local community.

The Board for their tireless efforts throughout 2019. They continue to ‘walk the talk” and contribute to building on our governance policies, financial sustainability and enhanced operational practices. I would especially like to extend a special appreciation to departing Board Members Helen Negri and Andrew Brodie for their outstanding efforts over the past 2 and 4 years respectively. Although stepping down from the Board, Andrew and Helen will continue to be engaged with the club in various capacities.

Our many business partners and sponsors for their continued loyalty and generous support. Without this support we would not be able to provide the numerous sporting programs that make our club a leader within the competition. In particular; I would like to thank Dwight and Tonja Ferguson - Ray White Ascot, Faran Gouldson, - Gouldson Legal, Rohrig Group, Chubb, FIIG, BOQ Albany Creek and Hyundai who have all made significant contributions throughout the year. We have over 30 partners and although there are too many to name individually, we sincerely appreciate you all and look forward to working with you all again in 2020.

The Club’s Strategic Plan and the business plans that support each of the Three Pillars; Sporting, Economic & Community. These practical and measurable plans continue to provide the guiding path for all of the Club’s subcommittees and major event committees. It is every chairpersons goal to ensure that we work diligently to consolidate and build on our past achievements, while continuing to fine-tune these plans to ensure that our strategies and action plans remain relevant and achievable.

That we now have 35 Life Members, 783 Volunteer Members and 298 Financial Members. It is our intention with your help to increase the number of Supporter Members by introducing a simpler online membership portal for renewal of 2020 memberships.

The hard work of the Committee lead by Touch Coordinator, Jodie Clarke & Carla Clayton. Their sterling efforts continue to contribute to the growth of all of our Senior and Junior Touch programs with more than 1200 players now registered, representing an increase of >15% on 2018.

Our Club Secretary Graeme Linklater for his leadership and consistent endeavors to improve our Board governance and operating procedures and for his significant efforts in compiling, with the assistance of Anthony McDermott, the Club’s Annual Report.

The tireless efforts of our newly appointed Rugby Programs Coordinator, Manuel Cole-Manolis. Manny has established an increased involvement with our surrounding schools resulting in an increase of 75% across our female rugby programs.

The contribution and guidance provided by our Sporting Subcommittee of Rugby Manager, Ryan Schultz, Jodie Clarke, Centurion Jen Gillett, Chief Executive Officer Matt Kaye and co-chaired by Board Member Peter Bayo and Sean Hardman. Their dedication and thoroughness when dealing with the many multi-faceted challenges over the past year has been exemplary and has gone a long way to raise the standards across all of our many Junior and Senior Sporting programs. 5 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Rugby Manager Ryan Schultz, 2019 Head Coach Rod Seib and their team of coaches, managers and support staff who have ensured through their selfless efforts that our Senior Grades pre-season preparations and training set the Club up for the strong start to the 2019 Brisbane Club Championship that we all enjoyed watching and supporting. With focus and discipline we were able to build on this start and establish a sizable lead across all grades, which meant by mid season we had an unassailable lead, which we converted into our second consecutive Doughty Shield.

That we were able to go one better in 2019 securing 9 teams in 8 Grand Finals, winning 4 and equaling our best ever finals result. Most encouraging was our Women’s team coached by Denzil Moors who played magnificently throughout the finals series only to be narrowly defeated in the Preliminary Final by a strong Wests side.

The behaviour and sportsmanship displayed during the finals series held at Ballymore. Both on and off the field by our players, support staff and loyal supporters consistently reinforced the values of grassroots rugby and our commitment to the ‘Brothers Way’, regardless of the result.

The Elite Development Program (EDP), which has been generously supported over the last 7 years by Glenn Rohrig – Rohrig Group. This Elite Development program has provided an important pathway and has played an integral role in the recruitment, development and retention of many of our young players.

Board Member Peter Bayo and all of our Junior Rugby Age Coordinators who once again led the junior rugby volunteer base. Thanks must also go to all the many parents and friends who willingly contributed their time and effort to fulfill the important roles as managers, coaches, field marshals, club officials, and numerous other roles throughout what was a again a very successful year.

Our Crosby Park Master Plan Committee members Project Development Manager John Shepherd, Architect Dan Liddy, Peter Bayo, Matt Kaye and Board member and Chairperson Russell McCart, for their tireless efforts over the past 3+ years. In particular this year, which sees the Club about to achieve a significant project milestone, the lodging of our Development Application (DA) with our landlords Brisbane City Council. The committee continues to drive what is arguably the most significant and exciting upgrade to our club facilities in the Club’s 70 years at Crosby Park.

Celebrating our 70th year at our spiritual home at Crosby Park it is appropriate to highlight the recent Crosby Park Master Plan Upgrade presentations and communications that have been well received by all. Our newly formed Fundraising Subcommittee members, Club Vice President Tony Lalor, Treasurer Brenden Yantsch, Matt Kaye, John Shephard, Dennis Croft, Brett McCall, Board member and Chair Geoff Rodgers, have over the last 6-7 months worked tirelessly and left no stone unturned to compile a fundraising strategy and plan which we have called “Brothers; Building a Stronger Community Campaign’, which is exactly what we are doing. We are thrilled that club stalwarts Tony Shaw and Paul McLean have agreed to become patrons of this critical fundraising campaign, which has already registered significant support from our general membership and supporter base. I would ask you all to consider supporting this campaign in any way you are able.

The diligent efforts of our Economic Committee members Andrew Brodie, Des Hogan OAM, CEO Matt Kaye and Chair Treasurer Brenden Yantsch who have achieved a very commendable financial result for the Club. Brenden and his committee have achieved our operating budgeted profit of $66,000. This when compared to our -$15,000 reported last year is a welcome turnaround and can be attributed to improved Home Game Day and Major Events income and continued tight cost management by Matt Kaye. Next year will continue to present its financial challenges across a myriad of cost centres and will require continued focus on controlling day to day operational expenditures, whilst always looking for short and long-term cost efficiencies.

The wonderful efforts of our major events organisers and helpers; Ladies Day, Board Member Helen Negri; Pre-Test Luncheon, Vice President Tony Lalor, Brothers RQ Corporate Golf Day, Mark Stanton, Board Member Geoff Rodgers, Paul McLean, Dwight Ferguson and CEO Matt Kaye and all the parents who assisted on Junior Trophy Day. These and many other volunteers have given generously of their own free time to ensure that we surpassed our fundraising budgets for these events and helped us reach our 2019 operating budget profit. 6 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019

The substantial efforts of our Community Subcommittee, Helen Negri, Geoff Rodgers, Bronwyn Humphries, Terry Mulchay and Chair Graeme Linklater. The committee has been instrumental in driving the coordination and budgets of all of our club events, including our supporter membership drive, review of membership categories and benefits and connecting specific sponsors’ charities with Home Game Day events. Committee members also assisted CEO Matt Kaye with the sourcing and negotiations of potential future sponsors and the development of alternate funding initiatives.

Our Senior Player Leadership Group led by Club Captain Reuben Wall (runner up to Harry Wilson for Brisbane Premier Player of the Year). In his first year in this challenging and important club leadership role, Reuben ably assisted by his fellow Leadership Group displayed outstanding leadership and support to the entire playing group, while also contributing significantly to the Junior Rugby program and special events,

The help and guidance of our local politicians Federal Member for Brisbane Trevor Evans MP, State Member for Clayfield Tim Nicholls, and Hamilton Ward Councilor David McLachlan. These elected representatives have been long-time supporters of Brothers and we look forward to their future support as we pursue further government infrastructure grants as an important component of the overall funding model for the upgrade of Crosby Park.

Our Brothers’ Family, who continue to focus on Alex Clarke and his family and their life’s journey, post Alex’s life changing rugby accident in 2018. It was wonderful to host Alex at one of our home games during the 2019 Season and we look forward to again welcoming Alex and his family at future home games in 2020.

Our great club is entering the most exciting era of its long and proud history. While rugby is, and always will be at the very heart of our DNA, we are much more than this, our club is the birthplace of MRP, we now have over 1200 women and girls playing both Rugby and Touch, which represents 48% of our player registrations and it is growing at a staggering 15% each year. So we have every right to be very proud of what our club is today, a highly inclusive family & community club, the best in .

We congratulate and celebrate;

Club stalwarts, Australia Day and Queens Birthday Awards recipients Dick McGruther AM OBE, Tony Shaw AM, Des Hogan OAM and Anthony McDermott OAM.

John Livingstone and his U12 Tour organising team for their very successful defense of the Shield in Mosman Rugby Club in earlier this year. This is now the fourth year we have conducted this tour.

Randall Corless and his organising team for a very successful U13 September NZ Tour. It is truly wonderful to see the hard work and generosity of parents and supporters continuing the Brothers touring tradition, which we all know builds lasting memories and friendships for all players fortunate enough to be involved.

I would also like to congratulate Rod Seib for his appointment to a fulltime role as Head Coach of the Reds Academy and wish him every success, while welcoming our newly appointed Head Coach Anthony Mathison and his assistant Dale Roberson.

Taniela Tupou who continues to impress as an established Wallaby prop and three of our Premier Grade players Fraser McReight (Captain), Harry Wilson and Michael Wood who represented in the U20 Wallabies at the World Cup held in Argentina last June. The Junior Wallabies narrowly losing a hard fought final to France.

Our U13, U14 and U15 sides for making the BJRU finals and to the U13 for their glorious success. All of our under-age divisions enjoyed another strong and enjoyable year. Sincere thanks to all coaches, managers, volunteers, players and families for their support throughout the year.

8 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019 TREASURER’S REPORT I am pleased to present the audited financial statements and Treasurer’s Report of the club for the year ended 31 October 2019. It has been successful year for the club. Net profit from club operations has improved by $46,742 from a reported loss in 2018 to a profit of $31,700 in 2019. This is a great result for the club.

Financial summary - The key financial information in relation to the 2019 financial year are as follows: Net profit after depreciation and abnormal items $66,139 (2018 loss $88,905) Operating profit before depreciation and abnormal items $31,700 (2018 loss $15,042)

Total income é6% $2,101,379 [2017 $1,980,473] Sporting – sporting revenues have levelled out as most formats reach player number capacity Community – successful year with club events saw an increase in event revenues Economic – increases in canteen and bar revenues driven by a better draw in 2019. Drawcard home games were played during to school terms and not during holidays and an extended season with senior teams in the finals lead to greater revenues

Total expenses é4% $2,069,678, [2017 $1,995,544] Sporting – sporting expenditure largely moved in line with player numbers with the exception of wages. The implementation of whole of club coaching resources and game day staff saw an increase in sporting wages. Community - greater margin was achieved in the 2019 events Economic - Cost of goods sold for canteen and bar has moved in-line with the increased revenues. The major increases in costs were driven by a $40,000 increase in rates, water and utilities to Crosby Park Administration – major savings this year with the reduction of admin wages

Masterplan – grants, donations and capital expenditure All donations, pledges and grants that have been received that are specific to the masterplan have been recorded separately in the accounts, away from general club operations. Stage 1A of the redevelopment has been fully funded with the receipt of $500,000 grant funding and agreed works contracts have been awarded. All agreed costs of Stage 1 A have been included in these accounts $501,981 Additional grant funding and donations have been received to assist the preliminary costs associated with BCC application for works and development approval for Stage 1B and beyond

The focus for the 2019 year was the identification of cost savings and efficiencies, which has been achieved in relation to administration costs.

The 2020 year will see a continuation of identification of cost savings and efficiencies across the club, and a major focus on providing support to the fundraising and infrastructure subcommittees to fund the continuation for the masterplan through the BCC application for works and development approval process and grant application process.

Conclusion I would like to take this opportunity to thank Matt Kaye and all BRC staff for their efforts. In particular I would like to thank Nicole Elder and Des Hogan who have worked tirelessly in assisting the club. I would also like to thank the Management Committee, club sponsors, club volunteers, players, coaches, members and supporters for their contributions to the club during 2019.

15 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019

THANKS TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL SPONSERS

16 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT What a year its been.. A financial surplus in a tough economic environment, sustained success across our rugby program, growth and pathway opportunities for our touch football program whilst the Crosby Park Master Plan continues to bubble along and is becoming closer to a reality. All the while cementing ourselves as the Community Sporting Hub in the inner north region of Brisbane. I am definitely proud of what has been achieved over the past few years however I am certainly not resting on laurels and will continue to put our members and the community first as we look toward the future. Building a successful sustainable Rugby Club provides many challenges but these challenges are met with an open mind and a strong team of support. The constant reviewing of the operating pillars, Economic, Community & Sporting ensures that we stay ahead of the game and continue to evolve. Working collaboratively from the board to our parent volunteers with a clear vision, purpose and values will only make the club stronger.

SPORTING We continue to lead both on and off the field with our Rugby and Touch Football programs the forefront of the club’s success. The Senior Rugby program has once again dominated QLD Premier Rugby with five (5) Minor Premierships (including 1st Grade Horsley Cup), nine (9) Grand Final appearances and four (4) Premierships. In addition, we secured the coveted Doughty Shield (Club Championship) with 6 rounds still remaining in the competition. Congratulations to all players and support staff for the way you conducted yourself throughout the year and the results are a testament to the effort you all put in during the year. I would like to congratulate all Brothers players who gained selection at International, franchises, Australian U20s, Brisbane City & QLD Country NRC & URC players, Australian U18 Schoolboys, QLD Schoolboys and Junior Representative teams. Special mention must go to Wallabies Taniela Tupou, Wallaroos Evelyn Horomia, Australian U20 Captain Fraser McReight and Australian U18 Captain Josh Flook. This continues to prove that the Brothers Rugby program is one of the best in Australia. The Junior Rugby program is certainly a work in progress, greater senior integration, coaching support, volunteer and parent engagement and communication are all issues identified at the end of 2018. We have addressed many of these with the employment of Rugby Programs Officer, Manuel Cole Manolis. There is still plenty of room for improvement to ensure we provide opportunities for all players to enjoy rugby with their mates whilst increasing skill development. Our girls 7s program continues to grow and a structured program will see them become a major force in the various BJRU competitions.

We will continue to further develop our programs in 2020 to ensure we meet the needs of the rugby fraternity. We have setup various sub committees to engage more support and ensure greater engagement from our members. Thanks to Board Members Sean Hardman, Peter Bayo and Rugby Manager Ryan Schultz for their dedication to the Rugby program throughout the year. Brothers Touch Association has become a major part of our club. With well over 1,200 players this year the challenge of providing suitable competition structures is becoming a difficult one. Our Junior competitions for both boys and girls provides a competitive but fun environment for players to enjoy the game. We must work hard in the next 12 months to provide pathways from our Junior program to our Senior Metro program. The Senior Program has continued to grow with six (6) teams playing in QLD Premier Metro Cup and five (5) taking part in the QLD State Cup. I would like to congratulate all Brothers players who gained selection in International teams for the FIIT World Cup held in March this year, NRL Touch Premiership, Brisbane Cobras Region, Met North and Junior State Cup. A special thanks to program coordinators Jodie Clarke & Carla Clayton who have taken the Touch program from infancy to its current state. The future is bright and we are certainly proud of everything achieved so far. Thanks also to all the volunteer coaches, managers and referees who support the Brothers Touch Association program.

17 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019

CLUB FACILITIES & OPERATIONS 2019 has been a challenging year, maintaining an ageing facility whilst managing a tight budget. The Federal Government Community Infrastructure Grant has provided much needed funds to upgrade the lights on Vic Walsh Oval and the playing field upgrades. As I look out of the office onto Jack Ross Oval in complete renovation, I am excited for the start of the 2020 season. Canteen & Bar sales have been boosted in line with a merged junior training trade to Friday nights, greater patronage at Senior Home games and the introduction of ‘The Butchery’. We will continue to listen to our members feedback to ensure we are providing a high quality experience at both training and games. We still need to work on greater engagement with a number of our key events as well as our membership offering all of which can be done through better communication and branding. We hope to slightly refine our offering for 2020 to ensure we continue to stay ahead of the game. I would like to thank the Club Sponsors for their support throughout the year, your investment in the club has assisted in the improved culture and environment at Brothers. We will continue to work hard in 2020 to provide a good offering to Sponsors where they can see brand exposure and business support from our members. Special thanks to Co Major Partners Faran Gouldson and Dwight & Tonja Ferguson for your on-going support.

COMMUNITY Our Function and Events have been well supported throughout 2019 thanks to our Brothers Community. We will continue to grow these with the support of various sub committees, ensuring we embrace the ‘Family Club’ model. The Crosby Park Master Plan continues to be one of the most important milestones in the club history. It has been exciting to help shape the club’s future and provide a Community Sporting Hub that we can all be extremely proud of. Stage 1A will be near complete prior to the 2020 Rugby Season. Thanks to the Clubs staff who have all worked above and beyond their duties this year. Full time staff Ryan Schultz, Jason Neylon, Karen Nichols, Alan Anderson and part time staff Manuel Cole Manolis, Nicole Elder and Jodie Clarke have worked tirelessly to provide the best possible program for the Brothers community. Also our volunteers across the club, thank you for your continued support of the club. Special thank you to Age Group Coordinators, Hobbits, Coaches, Team Managers, Crosby Park set up crew and parents.

Finally, to the Brothers Rugby Club Board led by David Hine thank you for providing the direction and guidance throughout the year. You should be proud of your achievements in creating what is Australia’s largest community rugby club.

Matt Kaye Chief Executive Officer

18 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019 RUGBY MANAGER’S REPORT After one of our most successful seasons in recent history, 2019 shaped as an exciting year of potential and growth for our great rugby club. Off the back of this momentum, 2019 proved to be another hugely successful year for Brothers Rugby Club both on and off the field. The overall rugby program that includes senior rugby, junior rugby, women’s rugby and sevens continued to achieve and lead the way.

Junior Rugby The participation within the junior program was again a strength of the club with over forty teams competing in the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union competitions. There was a big emphasis on providing a better program for all juniors through implementing a coach development/support program and an integration plan which saw our senior playing members have a consistent presence at junior training. The season began pre-Easter with players and volunteers taken through sessions that would provide them with an opportunity to start their development and enjoyment with the program. During this period, we utilised the services of Craig Gunn to educate our coaches on both player engagement and training design. The new role of Rugby Programs Officer and Manny Cole-Manolis also had great influence throughout the preseason and provided to the club with more resources to utilise in our junior programs. 2019 also saw the implementation of all Friday night trainings at both Windsor Park and Crosby Oval, which resulted in a greater community feel and more opportunities for the senior club to be involved. The junior program certainly made progress in providing a holistic and beneficial program to all players but there is still further development to be made. We are very excited to continue to support and grow the junior programs to ensure both players and parents can enjoy being apart of this great community.

Senior Rugby The senior rugby program had another hugely successful year that included growing participation and outstanding on field results. Brothers were again the only club in the Brisbane competition to field sevens senior teams and four colts teams. The depth in playing talent and continued development in program delivery resulted in Brothers again winning the Doughty Shield (club championship) by a near record margin, The Horsley Cup, five minor premierships, a record nine grand final teams and four premierships. These results ensured that many players were honoured with representative duties that included Australian U20 representatives, Australian U18 representatives, NRC representatives, URC U19 representatives and Reds U18 representatives. 2019 saw the introduction of Rod Seib as our new 1st Grade Head Coach. Coming to the club with a wealth of knowledge and experience, he had a huge amount of influence in turning the tides of 2018. Through his leadership and program our 1st Grade team were the most consistent performing team in the competition which led to the Horsley Cup (minor premiership) and a grand final appearance. Unfortunately, the team narrowly missed out on being successful on grand final day but the season can surely be deemed a great success. Credit must also be given to 1st Grade captain Tom Moloney who returned to the club from professional opportunities at the Rebels and Panasonic Wildknights. Tom led from the front all season and was a great ambassador for the team and club. special mention must also go to Harry Wilson who was awarded the Alec Evans Medal for Premier Grade player of the year. The Colts Program continues to be a strength of the senior program and again were well represented at the business end of the year. These outcomes were a result of the great work done in previous years and the philosophy the club applies to its colts’ program. This season we fielded four teams into the colts competition (2 in the Colts 3 competition) and resulted in our Colts 1 being Grand Finalist, Colts 2 Prelim Finalists and Colts 3 as Premiers. Along with the team success the colts program also provided a pathway for players such as Byron Ralston and Josh Flook to make 1st Grade debuts and end up starting in the 1st Grade Grand Final. With the colts competition changing to Under 20’s in 2020 and a review of our recruitment process, we are very confident that next year is going to be another successful season.

19 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Women’s Rugby Further effort and resources were put into the women’s program for 2019 with a focus on program development and the growing of playing numbers. After a significant improvement in results in 2018 our women’s team made it all the way to the preliminary final. This game turned out to be a very close contest, but unfortunately the team couldn’t hold onto a lead and went down in the final minutes. The highlights of the season was the better integration of our women's team into the club community, the attainment of 30 players, some great wins and the ability of our young team to compete with the best. Other outstanding achievements included Evelyn Horomia being selected into the Wallaroo’s squad and a number of our younger players commencing their representative pathways. There was also significant effort in creating a pathway for junior girls into our women’s XV’s program through the work of Manny Cole-Manolis. This included assisting a number of Brisbane schools with the development of both their coaches and programs and also the growth of our junior sevens program with teams in all age groups.

Elite Development Program The EDP has been the backbone of Brothers Rugby with both the recruitment and development of players over the last few years. The EDP gave the opportunity to twenty-four players to develop themselves both on and off the field which resulted in all members having great growth throughout the year. Another part of the program which has developed throughout 2019 is a partnership with Otago Rugby. This partnership saw their ITM Cup Coaches being involved with the program throughout the year along with two Brothers players spending time in their program after our season. There has been a big focus in the review process of our 2019 EDP to reformat the structure and staffing of the program for 2020. We are excited to see the growth of this program in the coming seasons and know that the bi-product will have great influence on the performance of both players and our teams. There has been a lot of on field highlights throughout the year but these have been solidified by the great work done off the field with our leadership group and social planning. Reuben Wall in his first year as club captain again was a loyal servant and along with the player leadership group were all key influencers of the playing group. 2019 also saw the introduction of the Butchery which gave a home for all players to support 1st grade. The integration of seniors and juniors is something that has great influence on the club and contributes to our strong club culture. 2019 was a great year for the rugby program and I look forward to building and bettering it in 2020. These results could not have occurred without the support of Matt Kaye, David Hine, Board Members, BRC Staff and all the devoted volunteers that gives so much to our great club.

Karen Nichols 21 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019 BROTHERS TOUCH ASSOCIATION Brothers Touch Football each year is going from strength to strength. Our participation numbers have grown, our representative program continues to improve and our senior engagement is on the rise. Our numbers are astounding for an affiliate only 5 years in operation and having run 9 seasons.

Our female participation is at 984 registered playing members with 303 male registered participants running around at Brothers in over 90 registered teams. With 1,287 registered playing members across the year it makes the touch football program a major percentage of the Brothers population. Queensland Touch Football (QTF) are currently running a Q Academy out of Brothers with the highest participation rate in the state.

2019 was a huge year of Touch with a jam packed calendar of representative events. was held in March with a huge number of Brothers players and coaches representing Brisbane Cobras region across the age divisions. In April, the FITT World Cup was held in Malaysia, it was a gruelling tournament with some days the temperature reaching 50 degrees.

The NRL Touch Premiership is the highlight of the Touch year. This competition is expanding each season and showcases many of our Brothers elite players. The final was a close encounter between the (Kat Stevens and Kimmy Sue See) and the (Toni Wells and Mariki Watego). The Broncos were the eventual Premiers in a sensational finish with an intercept and full length of the field try. Toni Wells had an outstanding season and was nominated for the Dally M Women’s Touch Player of the Year. 2019 also saw Brothers Touch Association attend the Queensland Junior State Cup for the 4th consecutive year. We had a record 6 teams participate at the annual event from Under 10 girls and boys to Under 16 boys. This is a huge program and coordinated by 2018 Brothers Volunteer of the Year, Carla Clayton. Carla works tirelessly to ensure that all 80 players are prepared for JSC and coaches a team at the same time. Carla is a huge asset to our club.

Brothers touch are attending the Senior State Cup in 2019 for the first time. Brothers are sending 5 teams to compete in the inaugural tournament. The teams have been training hard and will be very competitive. The State Cup has attracted some big names to Brothers and we hope to see these players in the Butchers Stripes at Metro in 2020. Brothers 40’s Women led by coach Shane Crotty were the first Brothers team to bring home silverware, with the players winning the Sunshine Coast Regional Champs in October. Additionally, our Under 10 girls went on to win their division at the Sunshine Coast Regional Junior Champs and the Under 12 girls were runners up. A fantastic achievement by all teams.

2019 was our second year of competing in the Metro Cup Premier Competition. We again fielded 6 teams with the Women’s program led by Greg English and Shane Crotty and the Men’s program under the guidance of Ben Smith and Joey Dimes. Our Metro program is still in foundation development phase and 2020 will be Brothers break out season at this level especially with our roll on from State Cup. Queensland Touch Football underwent a governance review in 2019. We are looking forward to a positive change for our sport and hopefully more help and direction from our governing body and region. There is much work to do in this area and under QTF’s current constitution Brothers do not receive a seat on the board or a vote despite being one of the biggest affiliates in the region. We look forward to the changes from this governance review and some equality throughout the region.

There are many issues that we face at Brothers touch. Volunteers and skilled members are difficult to come by. We have worked hard to recruit volunteers this year to assist with the coordination of game night and our different programs that we run. Finding and retaining reliable volunteers is at times more problematic than completing the tasks myself.

22 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Another pressing issue is the ability for the senior program to flow into the junior program. There is currently a huge gap between the two programs. It is extremely important for us to foster the pathways from our junior playing group to the elite senior programs . A goal for 2020 is to try to establish more of a link between the two playing bodies. We have such a high calibre of player in our senior program we need to see these players giving back to our junior program as we need help in this area.

Field and green space availability stunts our growth and opportunity. We need to work around rugby training on all our competition nights and we continually have to work our season and competition around junior and senior rugby training. If there was one dedicated night each week just to touch who knows what could be achieved. Our vision is to expand into the Senior Competition market as there is a huge need for this on the northside. Exactly how Brothers Touch originated.

BOQ Albany Creek have been unwavering in their support of our program and vision. We look forward to continually working with Jason and Amanda Johnston in the future and we thank them for their loyalty to Brothers Rugby as a whole. With over 1,200 registered players competing across 6 different competitions in QLD there is certainly lots of exposure with some of the biggest names in Australian Touch Football wearing the Butchers Stripes and the BOQ logo on their chest.

2020 will be a year of change for Brothers on the Touch scene. If we can keep our momentum flowing and engage the senior players into our junior pathway, the future is very bright for Brothers and our Touch Football program.

Jodie Clarke Program Manager

23 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019 MODIFIED RUGBY PROGRAM (MRP)

2019 was another fantastic year for the Modified Rugby Program (MRP) at Brothers.

The MRP is a world first, modified form of touch only rugby where each girl, boy or young adult with Autism, Aspergers or a learning and perceptual disability (MRP Players) has their own club Player Mentor on the field supporting them.

The MRP aims to move our MRP Players off the sidelines and into the main game. Through the GingerCloud Leadership Program, Player Mentors are nurtured and supported as they develop into a generation of young people for whom disability is normalised.

The MRP was created by GingerCloud Foundation (whose co-founders are a family from Brothers Megan and Anthony Elliott) with the support of the (QRU) and Rugby Australia (RA) and was piloted at Brothers in 2014 with 16 participants. In 2019, there are now 281 participants across 9 Clubs, 4 divisions and 2 states – QLD and the ACT – with the MRP team at the Vikings in Tuggeranong hosting its initial MRP season from April – June this year in .

In 2020, 8 new MRP teams will be hosted across South East, Regional and North Qld at Souths in Brisbane, Caboolture and in Dalby, Goondiwindi, Toowoomba, and Charters Towers. In the ACT, another MRP team will be hosted in Canberra.

In 2019, Brothers hosted all 4 MRP divisions – the original form of the MRP where each MRP Player aged between 7 and 13 years is matched with their own teenage Player Mentor, MRP 7’s which is a development pathway for MRP participants, the expansion of the MRP Colts program and the pilot of the MRP 7’s Plus division which is designed to be a pathway to mainstream sport. A highlight of the 2019 MRP season at Brothers was hosting the inaugural Modified Rugby Showcase powered by Classic Wallabies on Saturday 9 February at Crosby Road. This event featured a junior coaching clinic hosted by Classic Wallabies, MRP, MRP 7’s and MRP Colts Exhibition matches, and the Classic Wallaroos and the Classic Wallabies matches. What made this event unique was the amazing chance for women and men passionate about rugby to bid for a spot to play as a Classic Wallaroo or Classic Wallaby for the day. The event attracted more than 1,500 local rugby supporters and was a wonderful celebration of the power in inclusion through rugby.

The MRP teams at Brothers received some wonderful media coverage during the season including the fantastic visit from Channel 10s Around the Grounds program in June filmed at training at Crosby Rd. See link below: MRP feature – Channel 10s Around the Grounds

Brothers and Ruggers Restaurant were also featured in a recent Philanthropy Australia story about Max Elliott’s progress and the growth of GingerCloud and the MRP. See link below GingerCloud and MRP - Philanthropy Australia Megan Elliot Coordinator

24 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT

25 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019 CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT Another successful year for the brothers and sisters of Brothers Rugby club. This year saw the continued growth of our great club. We strengthened our culture, dominated the regular season and stormed into finals with a whole club representation.

The 2019 regular season was the accumulation of an incredibly committed network of coaching and manager roles, support staff, players and of course, the dedicated support from the Brothers community that travel to home and away games each week. This year we maintained in our possession the 26th Hector R. DOUGHTY SHIELD. This was achieved by maintaining a winning ratio of 80%, which is truly incredible, proving how healthy our club is. It is worth noting that we won this shield with the 3rd highest number of points in the history of the shield, 21 points behind the highest ever. You could say we did it in style, although I am biased. This consistent dedication and execution saw brothers arrive at preliminary finals with 11 teams.

Finals were massive. Every division had Brothers representation in preliminary finals, only trimmed down to 9 from 11 teams in grand finals. This is a new Brothers record and a QRU record. Two of these teams were 6th Grade A and 6th Grade B, Brothers grade depth this year was successful enough to play ourselves in a grand final. This was also a QRU record as it is the first time 2 teams from the same club have played off in a grand final.

To summarise our record-breaking season achievements, this totals 1 brothers record and 3 QRU records.

These records merely quantify our tangible success. Written into history, creating a benchmark to look back upon for future Brother’s generations. As the oldest club in Brisbane our history is rich and being a part of a season that has added record wins to our club history is an incredible honour of which we should be immensely proud. The success that cannot be quantified however, is our club culture. It is our difference. Week to week, we have the most support at games, and we have impressive attendance at celebrations come Saturday night. We have a new hidden weapon that allows this culture to flourish, THE BUTCHERY. It’s a haven of affordable beer, good mates, passionate support and top-quality music from our resident DJ clubman George Moloney. This is the reason we can proudly say “there are Brothers and there are others.”

Brothers has old boys and girls from the club’s humble beginnings, dedicated generational families, current players, coaches and managers all interested in the support and improvement of our family Club as a whole. We instinctively get involved in championing, alongside our Brothers and Sisters from all grades, all teams and all age groups by forming a tunnel of blue and white support onto the field, creating an atmosphere of club culture with the roar of our supporters cheering from the sidelines. Brothers supporters are not there just to see each game finish, they are there to watch the next and enjoy the company of Club members from different grades, professions and ages. Not only at home games is our club culture awe-inspiring, but this support continues well beyond the green pastures of our home in Albion.

I hope that in reading this you feel as proud as I do, to be a part of such an incredible club. I want to thank the leadership group, coaches, support staff and players for contributing their best to this great club. I would like to thank the Brothers’ community, it has been a group effort to build what is Brothers Rugby Club today.

Born in Toowoomba on the 21st September 1942, Barry grew up in the small town of Mt Tyson before boarding at Downwlands College from 1955 to 1958. His study lead to a doctorate and a significant career with the Department of Primary Industries.

Barry was involved in re-establishing Rugby Union in Toowoomba in 1963, with the formation of Rangers Club, who competed in the Brisbane B Grade competition in their inaugural year. The Risdon Cup, which remains the symbol of Rugby supremacy on the Darling Downs established the following season. 1964 also saw Barry represent Queensland Country against Country, a 14 all draw.

A member of the two Premiership winning Brothers sides in 1966 and 1968, Barry has the attention of the State selectors. He first donned maroon for Queensland against Fiji in July 1969. Alongside Queensland legends Alec Evans, Jules Guerassimoff, Bruce Brown, David Clark and Charlie Woodward, Barry helped record a narrow 17-16 win over the exciting Fijian tourists.

His second and final Queensland came the following month, in the annual August clash against Australian Combined Services. This time the maroon jerseys controlled the day to win 26-9. Barry remained a life-long Queensland Rugby fan.

A Private Funeral was held on Tuesday 8 January 2019, followed by a public function at Hundred Acre Bar, St Lucia Golf Club. Former Australia, Queensland and Brothers legends Bob and Barry Honan, Peter Reilly, David L’Estrange, Mick Freney, ‘Rugby” O’Rourke and Errol Allen were in attendance to farewell their friend and teammate.

Our thoughts are with Barry’s wife Robyn, their two sons Andrew and Peter, his surviving siblings Kerry, Geoff, Denise, Joan and their extended families.

LLOYD ATKINS Lloyd’s funeral will be held on Friday 5 April 2019 as a private event, but the family want all his friends to come and celebrate his life and memories with them at a memorial to be held at Brothers Rugby Club, Crosby Road on Friday 5 April at 2:30pm.

ROY ELMER (Courtesy Reds Media Unit) The Queensland Rugby Union community is mourning the loss of Roy Elmer who passed away on Wednesday 16 October 2019.

Elmer played over 50 games for Brothers, winning two Hospital Cups in 1950 and 1951, while in 1950 he was also awarded the F.M. Arnell Memorial Trophy as the club’s most improved player.

Upon finishing his playing career, Elmer moved into the coaching field an would go on to leave an immense mark on junior Rugby in Queensland.

Coaching at South’s, Elmer mentored a number of future Queensland and Australian representatives including Rob and and Cameron Lillicrap. Lillicrap said Elmer’s contribution to Rugby Queensland has been monumental.

“Roy coached at South’s when I first started playing in U8’s with guys like Rob and Tom. He was a great man, he influenced a lot of young rugby players over the years. He was one of the coaching directors in junior rugby in Queensland, and always believed in the development of young players”.

NEW PERPETUAL TROPHY: Denis “Rugby” O’Rourke Trophy

The purpose of this proposal is to recommend the management committee introduce the ‘Denis O’Rourke Colts Man of the Year’ to be awarded to a Colt who best demonstrates ‘the Brothers’ spirit’.

There is only one award presented annually to a Colts playing member at Brothers Rugby Club – the ‘Merv Hazell Memorial Trophy’ – for the Best and Fairest Colts Player. This award is named after Merv Hazel (Life Member, 1972) who was a significant figure at the club. Merv was recognised for his tireless work over four decades, particularly with Brothers’ Colts. The trophy is awarded to the best player (Colt) during the season. The latest recipient of this award was Junior Wallabies captain, Fraser McReight (2018).

Whilst at Brothers we recognise players who achieve great football feats, we acknowledge individuals who evince ‘the Brothers’ spirit’. It was former Club President, David Dunworth who best characterised the ‘Brothers’ spirit’ as ‘doing something for Brothers with the expectation of receiving absolutely nothing in return’. There may be a Colt who is not necessarily the best player during the season but exhibits values and behaviours consistent with those inculcated at Brothers Rugby Club.

An example of exhibiting the Brothers’ spirit could be evident in a Colts 3 player, who may be an average footballer, but always turns up to training on time, is respected by his team-mates, encourages positive behaviour amongst his peers, picks up rubbish, packs down fields, partakes in social activities at the club, gives his all for the Brothers jersey and respects the club’s history and values.

About “Rugby” O'ROURKE

This trophy is named in honour of Denis ‘Rugby’ O’Rourke. Denis has been a member of our Club for 60 years and during this time has been a player, coach, manager, administrator and mentor to generations of Brothers’ people.

Denis started as a lower grade player in 1960 and was also a member of Brothers U19(A) team playing in the inaugural QRU U19 season in 1961, whilst going on to play over 250 games during the next 17 seasons.

Denis came back to Colts in the 1989 season, coaching the Colts 3 boys and over the next 30 years would coach and manage the Colts 1, 2 and 3 teams and from 2010 to 2018 coordinate the entire Colts Program. Confining his coaching and managing to Colts grades, it is further noteworthy that Denis did not seek out the ‘profile’ appointments.

Denis mentored coaches and development officers and was a driving force in the recruitment and retention of our Colts program. The current Rohrig Elite Development Program draws heavily on the processes Denis had developed and put into place.

39 BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019

There’s no place like home The Butchery

David Stokes, the human megaphone of Brothers Rugby Club, summarises The Butchery as ‘an area to keep the riff- raff out’. Delving further, he describes this game day spectacle: White Stripes – Seven Nation Army, Cold Golds, Mullets, Ugly Heads, Frivolity, a trailer without a VIN number and the entire Marley Family.

In late 2018, Ryan Schultz proposed that Brothers introduce a supporters’ zone similar to ‘The Zoo’ in Otago. Three non-wise men, Stumpy, Macca and Stokesy were thinking along similar terms – establishing a Brothers Supporters Club based off ’ Bashup Park Pig Pen of the 1970s. An amalgamation of ideas eventuated; The Butchery was created.

But we needed a location. A serendipitous tree fall at Brothers opened up the possibility of locating The Butchery behind the in-goal line of Jack Ross Oval. The remanence of the dead tree hindered our efforts and Council indecisiveness resulted in us pondering: should we gelignite the tree stump and wake up ¾ of Ascot? Matt Kaye settled our concerns by ringing Council twice a day, the tree stump was removed.

On Round 1, over a long and humid weekend, a person who shall remained unnamed (Kamilo Guido) left raw unrefrigerated sausages in our beverage dispenser (the Rohrig Van). For obvious reasons we had to find another option. Simon Marley, Smithy and Garrath suggested buying a trailer off Gumtree and using an entire pallet of Newstead Brewing as a bartering option. Marley, Reuben and G-Money headed down to Rochdale and brought back to Brothers the most dishevelled unpowered vehicle on the face of the planet. It was perfect for us!

As the season progressed, The Butchery became better and better. It was pleasing to see so many Colts, Grades and Old Boys enter The Butchery early and leave hours later with a beer in hand accompanied by cheers and jeers. We have created an amazing and unrivalled club culture – something incredibly special and synonymous with our 114 years of history. Even though we unfortunately lost Premier Grade this season, 75% of Ballymore supported Brothers. No amount of money or university scholarships can buy what we’ve got.

It would be remiss not to thank a few people. Ryan Schultz and Reuben Wall for their indefatigable exertion in leading the playing members. Simon Marley for his pioneering efforts throughout the year. The much loved G-Money for his tunes on game day and in the Green Shed Bar. George Tarabay, Kamilo, Swepo, Billy and Fish for manning the bar. Manny, Sayery, Liddy, Dave Hine, Geoff Rodgers, Matt Kaye, Jason Neylon and Des Hogan for their assistance. Noah, Bailey, Ronny, Smithy, Garrath, Lawson for setting up and packing down. Alcoholics – Sam Marley, Tyquin, Ollie Herbert, Sam Nichols and Dan Crowell for lining our coffers.

In the words of our honorary patron, Buddha Handy ‘may The Butchery live long and prosper’.

1st Grade CLUB CHAMPIONS; Grand Finalist; Minor Premiers; Winner of the Hector R. Doughty Challenge Shield, Vince Nicholls Memorial Trophy, Keith Horsley Memorial Trophy, Pilecki-Shaw Cup, Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield, Bola-Kefu Memorial Shield & Green Beacon Cup

The 1st grade teams’ primary goal at the start of the season was to lead the club both on and off the field. After standards were established the leaders within the playing group continued to drive a training environment which rewarded hard work. These standards, which were maintained by the playing group, set the foundations for a successful season. A strength of the club was the connectivity that existed between all teams. This was evidenced in the selections, as the opportunity available for players to progress through the Grades and Colts to play for the 1st Grade team. Byron Ralston, Josh Flook and Ethan Dobbins are excellent examples as they made their debuts in 1st Grade out of the Colts team. The 1st Grade team shared a close connection with 2nd Grade throughout the 2019 season. Training together as a squad, the playing group developed excellent training habits and were delivered consistent messages from a supportive coaching group. Players set a high standards and leaders within the playing group drove these standards. Throughout the season the 1st grade team enjoyed many highlights. Commencing the season with a win on Jack Ross Oval against Bond University in the opening round of the competition created initial momentum to kick off the season. The round 2 away win on a wet day at Souths established Brothers as one of the contenders for the season. The confidence gained from this win assisted with winning performances through the first 7 rounds of the competition.

The first loss of the season was experienced in our round 8 away game against GPS. This game served as a good reality check and refocussed our attention on the standards which needed to be met. However, the fighting qualities of the team were never in doubt and this was highlighted in our come back wins in rounds 12 and 13 against Wests and Norths respectively. The excitement of a game winning try after 80 minutes against Wests and then coming back from a 26-0 half time deficit against Norths were two of the most resilient wins of the season. Finishing the regular season off with a win in our round 18 game at Easts secured the minor premiership, which was a deserving reward for all the work put in and a good reflection of our consistency throughout the season.

After losing both our round games against GPS during the season it was a credit to the playing group to recognise the need to adapt our game plan in the major semi-final and attack them in and around the ruck instead of the usual expansive running game. An outstanding performance which showed to focus and desire of the playing group. Whilst disappointing to lose the grand final 31-26 against UQ, the 1st grade team did achieve the goal of leading the club and were excellent ambassadors for the club and its members.

Along with the minor premiership the 1st grade team was involved in securing the following inter-club trophies: Pilecki Shaw Cup (Wests) Green Beacon Cup (Norths) Bola-Kefu Memorial Shield (Souths) Rod Seib Head Coach

The season commenced with a hungry squad eager to develop during preseason under the guidance of new Premier Head Coach Rod Seib. With the retirement of several club stalwarts in 2018, we were fortunate to transition some talented Colts into our enviable Grades Program which provided the coaching group a strong level of confidence.

After a successful 15/1 win-loss regular season & demonstrating an entertaining style of play, our players were primed for the business end of the season! Accounting for a resilient Wests team in the semi final & progressing to Grand Final Day, we were well focused on the season team goal – a Premiership! As we prepared diligently & observed GPS secure their shot at the title, we knew a battle was brewing. In what can only be described as one for the ages, our boys fought hard to have scores level at the completion of regular time, play 20 minutes of extra time to also have scores locked up, before conceding a penalty 7 minutes into golden point 40m out where GPS kicked the victorious points. Whilst disappointed with the result, I must commend the performance of both teams to give their all for 97 grueling minutes but also the respect & humility shown at full time for each other – some great character!

Experienced club men Henry Fitzgerald & Kris Larosa admirably shared the Captaincy during the season as they challenged for 1st grade opportunities & always had the team focused on the job in their own relaxed manner. Congratulations must go to the well deserved recipients of the team awards: Chris Morgan - Brothers Medal, Kris Larosa – Best Back, Liam Usher – Best Forward, & Henry Fitzgerald – Best & Fairest.

Finally, I’d like to thank coaches Nio Halangahu & Chris Ryan for their endless support & friendship throughout the year, along with the collaborative efforts of Team Managers Chris Morgan & Tony Wall who were tireless with their commitment.

Congratulations to all players & coaches on a successful year!

Season 2019 started with a real sense of purpose to continue to improve on the skill base and game plans of the group to produce a really attractive and disciplined brand of footy with a young group of players Round 1 was highly successful only losing in a tight game against GPS at GPS and sitting on top of the table and where clear front runners, during this we had some tremendous wins and a real test of character to stay disciplined and put teams to the sword involving a close win against Norths with 14 men testament to the boys character. With some real leadership form within the group to keep them focused on the prize moving into round 2 from the likes of Brendan Bell, Blaise Hartley, Bailey Ralston, Michael Celona and Aiden Cairns, we also lost Will Wilson early in the season to a serious ankle injury that untimely tested the forwards go forward and punch mid field. Round 2 as always is a real test of character as we are hit by injuries and have to call on our depth at the club to get us home in the back end. We set the task for the players to try and achieve a clean sheet for round 2 and win our first silverware for the season in the round 2 clash with GPS at home season and we knew that our real test for the group would be to be able to play a real finals brand of footy in hope that we would secure the major prize at the end of the year. We finished the season right with only the1 loss and we were the dominated side during the season with most win and best point’s difference. Finals footy is without a doubt the most exciting time of the year with all the hard work completed during the season ready to bear fruit. We had a mixed campaign we won the Major Semi to Wets in week 1 and where able to enjoy a special session on the Saturday with 6 grade team having a training run on the week of the preliminary final pretty amazing result for the club As always you need to perform at your beast and have a lot of luck to win a grand final and ultimately we achieved that as a group against a very strong and committed Easts team on the day.

As coaches we are really proud of the effort from the group this year to get the ultimate reward for the season as we continue to develop the young guys out of colts into the grade we will continue to have a success grade program at Brothers again this year we unearthed some talent for the years ahead as well a few old heads have returned to offer the knowledge and skill to the younger group as reflected in the grades. Want to thank a group of special young men that played 3rd grade this year and helped us achieve something special this year as a group whilst setting the highest standards of self-discipline on and off the field that I have seen in a long time. Really proud of the performance of all grades this year and the efforts put in by all Coaches, managers and the players. We continued to build and develop the skills base of all players within the grades and it showed in our results for all grades. The commitment from all the coaching staff to improve skill of all players was especially pleasing to see.

Really excited to see how a few of our development players from this year continue the journey next year Matt Connor, Billy Bulley, Brendan Bell, Cassuis Elisaia-Mamea and Robby MacCafferty A special thanks to the group of coaches and staff that have allowed us all to improve during the year John Gabbet, Andrew Clough, Tony Wall, Billy Leal, Pete Williams James O’Connell and club stalwart John Diamond whose commitment and support have been invaluable also to club S&C Nick Wilcox for his assistance in helping maintain the fitness of the group As we look forward to another off season we will start to plan for what will be another successful season in 2020 for the Grades. Honour to have coached the quality of men making the mighty 4th grade team of 2019. Mateship, work ethic at training & matches, a ‘willingness to give their all’, and players enjoying their footy, are some attributes that come to mind.

We had a belief in how we wanted to play and took it to all opposition teams this year. I reflect fondly on memories of playing Direct footy, based on Dominant carries to get momentum, and then presenting Multiple Attacking threats after building phases. We had big men, hard men, workers, finesse, speed, leaders, and plenty of good footy sense. All in a team with a diverse spread of ages from first year grades players to experienced campaigners. We strived to control field position, and as the year progressed, we became more effective with this. We were a good defensive side - effective and able to pressure teams. We were a team not intimated by anyone. Measures for success come in different forms. The first & most tangible, are results ‘on the board’. We finished 2nd on the ladder at season end.

We won the major semi-final (beating Souths that day) to book our spot in the Grand Final. Unfortunately, Souths reversed the result in the Grand Final. We were honourable in defeat on Grand Final day, and everyone gave their all. We went into the Grand Final with a genuine belief, and it hurt when we didn’t get the win – we played Souths 4 times through the year, and each got 2 wins apiece.

In 2019, we had 45 players start in 4th grade, with an additional 7 players playing valuable roles off the bench. A total of 52 men playing a significant role for the team. A great group of men. A great playing group of men, ably supported by a committed coaching group and support team of manager and S&C – quality people who were a delight to work with – Pete, Billy, Sandy, Nick, Jack.

Thank you for a memorable year. Tony Wall Coach

The 2019 season was a very enjoyable one for the Brothers 5th grade side, with the team managing to secure a second consecutive premiership on the back of a good pre-season and some healthy competition for spots. The squad continued to build a strong culture both on and off the field with the team making many lifetime friendships.

Well lead by Captain Mike Browne, the team managed to win an amazing 15 games from 16 during the season, a winning percentage of 94%, only going down in round 1 to souths in the final minute of play. As per previous year we had a good combination of older heads (Blair Hart, Wayne Maki to name a few), regulars from the previous year (Alex Mitchell, Jack Parker, Jimmy McNicol and Alex Bewsey for example) plus several colts making the next step up to grades football, which they handled admirably.

The coaching group of John Burton, Graeme Silvester and Nathan Wallis worked seamlessly together, in particular when one of us had to work interstate then the others would liaise and cover each other without skipping a beat. The management duties also ran smoothly with Stephen “Stumpy” Twist offering valuable insight into opposition teams as well as our own players, on top of his team management and water duties. His contribution should never be downplayed, especially with the difficult task of making sure everyone is registered and has played enough games to make finals.

The player of our grand final was Alex Bewsey who played an inspired game after missing the previous grand final when he suffered a horrific ankle injury in the week preceding the final. As a playing group and coaching team, we look forward immensely to returning for 2020 and attempting the lofty goal of a 3-peat in the 5th Grade competition.

6th Grade CLUB CHAMPIONS; PREMIERS; Minor Premiers; Winner of the Hector R. Doughty Challenge Shield, Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield & Bola-Kefu Memorial Shield

The year 2019 was a very prosperous and exciting year for the whole playing, coaching and management team of 6th Grade. The squad consisted of ample playing talent and a near destructive social drinking culture. The motto of the squad was simple – “play hard and drink harder.” Going through the season undefeated it was a testament to all involved that if you get fit you win games and when you win games you have fun.

In combination with the 7th grade squad and the old school implementation of plenty of push-ups and sit-ups we were able to achieve something never witnessed in Brisbane Premier Rugby – two Brothers teams fighting it out for a premiership. Before I get to the rundown of that fantastic game I would like to make a special mention to a few of the groups shinning stars. Firstly, our 10 Joseph Kerrins and his amazing leadership skills and ability to turn a game on its head in the blink of an eye. Secondly, Hugh Harvey and some of the hardest and straightest running seen at the club this year. Thirdly, Lachlan Barazza with the ball skills of a back and the toughness of a core-filled block wall leading the forwards around the park and finally, Robert Hickson and skipper Cooper Burtenshaw both with some of the most inspirational speeches to have even been heard on Jack Ross or Vic Walsh Oval.

Though the season was so successful it was not without ups and downs – whether it be the constant stream of injuries, having blokes pick their careers or university education over turning up to training or just those boys who are too scared to get involved in contact drills on a Tuesday night, we made it work. This being my first foray into coaching I learnt a lot about myself and learnt a lot about getting to know the ins and outs of what goes through each and every players mind. The coaching strategy was simple – be effective in the micro skills of the game; catch and pass, be effective at the breakdown, make the first up tackles count and back yourself when the opportunity arises.

As mentioned above, after an undefeated season it was time to head to the spiritual home of Queensland Rugby and turn it on for finals. Heading into the major semi-final against a GPS side who had put it to us at various stages through the season the lads turned up and put them to sword scoring 10 tries in an almost perfect performance. We were then blessed with a week off before the big dance which was definitely most welcome as the bodies were sore and the rhetoric of the squad being that when 7th grade we short we would help them out and vice-versa.

Grand Final day was then upon us against our good mates and drinking partners 7th grade. It turned out to be the toughest game of the year and it wasn’t until the second half that we ended up edging away and claiming the flag. A couple of great moments happened on this day; the Brothers on 3 chant to start the game having both 6th grade and 7th grade coming together before the war began, then at the completion of the game having both squads bind together and sing the team song as one, also, the enormous tunnel made by all the Brothers players and supporters was something to behold as it took us nearly to the far side of the field.

All-in-all 2019 was one of the best years of rugby I have ever experienced and as a squad we overcame our adversities and put together one of the most complete seasons you will ever see. Special thanks to our manager Stephen Twist and part-time assistant coach Geordie Harries whose assistance was hugely beneficial.

Onwards and upwards to 2020 and back-to-back flags.

If either of us was purely a “Results” based coach then the 2019 season would have been a ringing success. Sadly neither of us has ever focused only on the win or the result. The preparation and process of training has always held our attention in at least equal shares with match day performance.

We were buoyed by Rod Seib’s comments at the first meeting that he had been warned that Brothers have their own way of doing things and players would resist change. He said a mouthful. We often reflected throughout the season how prophetic those words had been.

The players (some - quite athletic and sound players – some not so) were intransigent in their ways and refused to consider alternative approaches to play or training. Eventually some inroads were made.

Of course, nobody expects 7th grade to be the repository of the next Reds squad.

From the beginning numbers at training and games were sparse. The first competition game of the season was forfeited. This gave rise to a points deficit that was only overcome in the last game of the regular season (in the last ten minutes of that game in reality). Throughout the season numbers at training would vary from a handful to ten or so.

We did not have the benefit of a manager and relied heavily on Stumpy and Simon Marley, both of whom were of invaluable assistance.

By and large the coaching was effected by Simon who was both well prepared and effective in his training of the teams. He should complete at least a first grade ticket and aim for higher qualifications.

Without the players from sixth grade doubling up throughout the season we were a no-show. They must be applauded. Throughout the season we had half a dozen or so as regulars. As finals arrived - training more resembled the start of the Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run.

We detected a very clear message at this time “MAKE THE GRAND FINAL”. Players were finally offered from “above” and we lurched tripped and stumbled into and through the finals. One or two players (regulars) were a bit upset at being pushed to the side at this stage. This was all resolved at the Grand final.

The fielding of a team at this level will always have attendant problems and difficulties.

Players are slow to commit until they are sure there will be a viable team. Players’ commitments work/uni/etc make attendances erratic. Quite possibly this contributes to these players being ineligible for the higher grades.

Whoever takes it on needs an understanding of the competition and the players. This made Simon Marley an excellent choice for Sixth Grade coach. We believe he should be regarded for higher grades. A competent manager is also essential.

After coming off a somewhat successful but disappointing 2018 season - placing in the top 4 but unable to play in play offs due to injuries, the future of our women’s program was up in the air for 2019. This year we started off with 16 registered players during pre-season and as we progressed, we finished off with a strong 27 players. Word of mouth was our biggest success in player retention with past players and current players inviting their friends and family members to join our club.

Through hard work and determination our women’s team fought their way to the Preliminary finals defeating 2018 finalists GPS in the Minor Semi Finals but going down to West rugby by a mere 3 points finishing 3rd overall. The highlight of the season was our women taking on the ‘Classic Wallaroos’ in a friendly match of 10’s which was an awesome experience for our younger players playing some of the former greats!! With a great season saw a few of our women represent on a higher stage. Wallaroo Prop Evelyn Horomia found her home in Brothers before she took on the Black Ferns in NZ in August, Gemma Schneaubelt represented PNG in the women’s 7s going head to head with some of the best in the world. Taia Stowers, Elaina Saluni & Rosie Ebbage were added into the Qld Red training squad along with 2017 Brothers captain Hilisha Samoa who is set to make her come back in 2020 for Brothers. And Finally, Luanna Moors represented Qld in the Youth Girls Rugby 7s Nationals in the Sunshine coast.

All in all it was our best year to date, but our women are looking do even better in 2020 and look forward to the pre- season introduction in Jan!

Colts 1 CLUB CHAMPIONS; Grand Finalist; Winner of the Hector R. Doughty Challenge Shield, Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield, Bola-Kefu Memorial Shield & Green Beacon Cup

Brothers Colts 1 in 2019 culminated in a close Grand Final loss to Souths, 21-17. Whilst it was obviously not the result anyone wanted, the boys left Ballymore that afternoon knowing that they’d given their all and were beaten by a better side on the day.

The group of players that came together in 2019 was a good mix of first and second year colts and a great cross section of schools around Brisbane. By season’s end, these boys have become great teammates on the field and great friends off the field. What is extremely exciting for Brothers Rugby moving forward, is the work ethic and commitment to continual development that this group had and we were delighted to take players who weren’t necessarily considered schoolboy superstars and help them develop into formidable forces within the Colts competition.

Coach Wayne Maki led our tight knit group of forwards that improved greatly throughout the year. The pack was defined by their toughness and relentlessness in each and every collision. Ethan Dobbins was awarded Best Forward for a brilliant season in set piece and around the park and is someone who has the ability to change a game with just one play. Attack coach Manuel Cole-Manolis gave the boys the freedom to play an attacking style of rugby, leading to many great highlights. A Round 1 demolition of Bond University set the tone for the year with the boys going on to entertain the crowd every Saturday. Hudson Creighton, with his great attacking prowess, improved defensive contact and booming left foot boot was awarded the Best Back.

The Colts 1 side narrowly missed out on Minor Premiers, with 13 wins and just the 3 losses across the 16 rounds of the season. Each week was certainly not perfect but the environment the players created was one that challenged skillsets which led to the continual improvement as the year went on. As we all know, Brothers is always the club that opposition sides target, which meant each week was tough and we had to rely on different facets of our game to win. Round 11 against Souths was a combination of a terrific team defensive effort with great attacking skill in attack, whilst our home game wins against both GPS & Easts were tough encounters that relied on forwards to drive our success.

Proudly, we were delighted to see a number of our players be selected in representative teams at the end of the year, further underlining the great improvement of individuals throughout the year. Hudson Creighton, Nick Cross, Ethan Dobbins, Josh Flook, Nick Houlahan, Angus Lovelock, Hudson Mulcahy, Johnson Oyelodi, Jake Pappin, Byron Ralston, Conrad Skelton, Darcy Schostakowski and Jacob Stocker were all rewarded with representative positions and together, put the club in a strong position moving forward into the future.

Special mention should go to Nick Cross, who did a great job in captaining the side and was awarded the Brothers Medal. Mention also to Byron Ralston who made two cameo appearances prior to cementing a spot in the Brothers Premier Grade side and to Josh Flook who was awarded our Best & Fairest and has a very bright future. Similarly, to Isaac Donohoe who ran our Strength and Conditioning Program, we thank you for keeping the boys nice and fit and a huge big thank you to Ryan Shepherd who assisted on game day.

Finally, we thank the best manager in the world, Jim Marning for his care, support and good humour at every training session and game, we were extremely lucky to have you looking after us.

Coaching Brothers Colts 1 in 2019 was a privilege and we thank the families of the players for their tremendous support.

Colts 2 CLUB CHAMPIONS; Grand Finalist; Preliminary Finalist; Winner of the Hector R. Doughty Challenge Shield, Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield & Bola-Kefu Memorial Shield

The 2019 season was one full of challenges, but most importantly one full of learning and development, for the Colts 2 group. The start of the season saw a team come together from an array of extremely different Rugby backgrounds and initially struggle in the first few rounds. From there, through a lot of hard work together, came a change in fortunes leading us to performing as a Top-4 team throughout the season.

Using well over 40 starting players, and more than 55 in total, the efforts of every single player that came into the Colts 2 environment, and strove to achieve what was best for our team, is testament to culture that exists within the club, and particularly in the Colts program, for its ability to rapidly engage and transform all individuals who ‘buy-in’ to its values. There were many boys that developed into players of a far higher standard than they had ever achieved before, and by the end of the season were performing above the Colts 2 level.

The highest point of the year came at the end of the regular season with the two-week stretch of the final round against Easts (in an effective playoff to make the finals) and the Minor-Semi Final against the arguably stronger UQ, who had beaten us comfortably only a couple of weeks before. These two performances showed how far we had come as a group over the course of the season, as we displayed some traditional ‘Filth’ spirit of dogged determination and willingness to put bodies on the line for each other. We came up well short in the preliminary final against Bond University, however both they and Souths were the most-deserving finalists, with 3rd being an extremely respectable result for our team, given the results of the season.

I would like to highlight the extremely important leadership role that our captain Matt Lo Grande played in our team. He was pivotal in pulling this team together into a tight-knit bunch who not only enjoyed playing together but held each other accountable to the high standards expected of this club. It cannot be overstated how hard he worked on his leadership, and by the end of the season was rewarded with a very well-deserved Colts Man of Year award. I would also like to congratulate the winners of our team awards and the outstanding roles they each played within our season: Best Player – Isaac Brosnan; Best Forward – Will Hyne; Best Back – Jack O’Malley; and Brothers Medal – Tom Hughes.

Thanks must also go to the Colts 3 coaches Liam McKeown and Jon Irwin for their ongoing and absolute support of Colts 2, and the general Colts program, throughout the season. Their Premiership victory came well-deserved off the back of a collaborative approach, centred on the boys enjoying their Rugby above all else – something extremely important to Colts footy.

Lastly, thank you to Francois Postal, as assistant coach, and David Cox, as Team Manager, for their hard work and dedication towards the team’s constant improvement throughout the season. The learning and development opportunities we experienced together throughout the year were something that will hold us all in good stead for many years to come.

Despite the challenges that this year presented, it has provided the club with a wider core of players who I’m sure are more than capable of performing, and achieving, great success for the club not only next year, but well into the future. With the move of Colts to Under 20s next season, I am sure that these men will be at the forefront of leading, and driving, a strong and inclusive winning culture as we push for the elusive Colts ‘Triple-Crown’.

Colts 3A & 3B CLUB CHAMPIONS; PREMIERS & 11th; Winner of the Hector R. Doughty Challenge Shield, Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield & Bola-Kefu Memorial Shield

Our year started well for the Colts 3 boys with a new pair of coaches taking over the Colts 4 team meaning our regular numbers going went from 40+ to a 15-18.

While we started off well with good wins early in the rounds, injuries started to hit the Colts 1&2’s. Wins became hard to come by unlike previous years. The backs stocks lacked in comparison to years before and a few handy backrowers got to live the dream of showboating outside the comps best 5/8 in Bailey Page. We had a great win in serious humidity against a very strong Logan team in a game which tested everyone’s character knowing that if we can get the right team on the paddock, we can mix it up with the biggest and best. We kept in touch of the top 4 behind a huge Sunnybank side and a now undefeated Uni team. As the year went on key injuries in Colts 1 and 2 made winning challenging but we hung in there with some huge performances from the likes of Zak and Niam and the ever-constant Ado, JB and Hainesey etc although injuries started to claim those guys too.

Our depth was seriously tested on the Splendour weekend where, due to injuries or absence, we had no regular Colts 3 players to choose from, so we made up what was a pure Colts 4 team. Colts 4 were having a tough year and had yet to win one. The Colts 4 boys led by their captain Ben Stanton played the game of their lives with young Charlie Greentree playing out of his skin (and nearly passing out) getting us a strong win against a full strength GPS!. This game brought to our attention a few special people who, subsequently played their way onto the bench for the upcoming Grand Final.

Move to the second last game of the regular season and we had Logan forfeit. This meant we were amazingly into the Grand Final against the high-flying Uni. This led to the last game of the regular season being a dead rubber against Uni where they inflicted a 40-point drumming at Crosby. The next week against the Minor Premiers at Ballymore for the GF one was evidently going to be an uphill battle and one that no-one expected us to win.

We headed to Herston for the final dance at Ballymore. We were without our regular front row and had over 15 injuries which meant we had to plug the holes with a few boys who had played the bulk of the year in a winless Colts 4. Uni rocked up in shirts & ties, had paid for their grand final winning shirts already and were expecting us to roll over and just cop it. As far as they were concerned, they were going to wipe the floor with us with a few of their star backs slotting back into their team after playing in the losing Colts 2 minor final.

Uni scored in the first minute of the game which was not an ideal start from a signature move that we knew was coming. Brothers then scored 5 minutes later and then took the game by the scruff of the neck and held the lead for the rest of the game. The leadership of the Captain Aiden Lewers (GF man of the match) and Bailey page in the backs with Tom Kerby were outstanding. The bell rang and we were once again the premiers of Brisbane Colts 3. It was a day and night (and another day and night) we will never forget.

From a coaching perspective it was one of the proudest moments of our life! It just showed the character of a great group of blokes who banded together and really played as a team and went on to win the GF against all odds.

Special mention to Mick & Simon who had the Colts 4 team and not only got them organised and playing a good style of footy, had to deal with multiple changes every week sometimes at the last minute too. Well done Gents. Liam McKeown 72 Coach BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Under 16 The 2019 BRC Under 16 /Junior Colts enjoyed a season of fun formulated by 3 ex-players and old boys of Nudgee College.

The team made up from 8 boarders from Nudgee, players from Churchie, Brisbane Grammar and Padua came together and enjoyed each other’s company and getting to know each other whilst maintaining some good banter along the way.

Although results didn’t go our way, the boys turned up each week and gave their all at training for our 3 coaches and each other. Team spirit truly shone through with these guys even when down on the scoreboard.

The coaches’ philosophy was to work hard for each other, turn up each week and work on improving skills – regardless of outcomes on Sunday.

The team enjoyed great support from parents which certainly makes life easier for management & coach’s. Parents always willing to lend a hand and support the boys. To receive comments from parents saying, “it’s great to see the improvement in the boys” says a lot for the coaching group and players alike. Clearly in an environment that allowed the boys to express themselves and feel confident that ‘having a go’ would not result in a spray from the coach’s. It was evident that the team was far more relaxed than what they would be at the school rugby programs that does tend to create a sense of pressure.

The team would like to thank the Brothers management group for their support throughout the season and Karen for the McDonalds vouchers which allowed the boarders who missed meal time at school to have a feed each week prior to being dropped off back to school. I know the boys were very appreciative of this from the club.

Thanks again, we look forward to seeing what 2020 offers for this group. Damon ‘Des’ Haines Manager

Under 15 The 2016 season proved rewarding and yet challenging for this age group. A majority of boys walked away with improved skills and a sense of achievement from their time with the club and my sense is most parents felt it was a good investment for their fees and time in developing these young men.

As we move through the season in chronological order the changes from half season to full season created mixed reactions. It also meant that we had 2 very different teams between the first and second half which showed in our results. In some cases, it brought players into the club but for others it made them cease playing. For many it meant a divided season, the first half fully committed to club and the second torn between club and school. The club’s approach to fees for this age group was very well received given the initial confusion and challenges.

The players are becoming young men and it was great to see a dramatic shift in their skill level and self-belief as the season progressed. The introduction of senior player coaches was very well received by the playing group and the coach’s ability to manage them, communicate what was required at the same time making it enjoyable was a winning combination. Whilst there where a few challenges around coach availability and communication this improved as the season progressed. The results in the first half saw the team leading their division with strong confidence and skills being shown across the park. In the second half it was a challenge to get boys attending both training and games along with several injuries meant we struggled to field a team often relying on U14 players to make the numbers.

At trophy day we had several boys receive their Brothers 10 year medal and I applaud the club for this award as it truly was a key motivator for several boys in their involvement throughout the year.

I would encourage the club to find a way to stop other clubs poaching players as no one benefitted from this and the BJRU seemed totally ignorant or unwilling to act. The players who remained where forced to play in a lower division and the players who departed found it difficult to get games as the Div 1 teams struggled to field team’s week in and out. If players are looking for a higher quality of game then they should focus on regional activities and programs as opposed to shifting clubs.

General parental encouragement from the group to the club for coming seasons would be to engage with the age group early, make key decisions prior to the end of the calendar year and then with the utmost flexibility around individual attendance set dates and run with those times. Overall a great year with lots of positives and our thanks to all who supported this age group along the way.

AGE GROUP REPORTS – Junior Division

Under 14 Brothers fielded one under 14 team for the 2019 season. With a move to ensure the boys had an enjoyable season and enable more alignment between juniors and seniors, the club appointed Prem Grade players, Lawson Creighton and Matt Faesler, to their first junior coaching roles. Clint Groves and David Clark managed the squad of 25 boys, which was made up of a mix of A and B players from 2018 plus a couple of new boys to the club. It took a little while for Matt and Lawson to find their groove with coaching teenage boys, but very much grew into the role. Training sessions were a mix of fun and skills & drills. It was great to see some real friendships develop through the season and not unusual to see the boys massed around the coaches talking well after training had finished. U14 Navy was graded to 2nd division, where they won 50 percent of their games and finished 3rd overall for the season. We started the season with a full bench and ended with scratching for numbers as injuries through club and school rugby kicked in. Parents, coaches and managers consider the season to have been a success and we believe a large percentage of this group would be keen for a half season in 2020. This will be a challenge for the club, as there will only be a small number of boys who would continue for a full season. For those boys not playing GPS rugby, we may in fact lose these boys if a team can’t be filled for a full season. David Clark Age Group Co-Ordinator

U13 NAVY – Div 3 Premiers U13 Navy had a disjointed start to the season with a few key injuries to players and other players deciding not to continue with the team as we implemented our two key elements for this year – Positivity and Accountability. We planned to be the team that were in charge of our own destiny and not be at the mercy of ill-discipline, the referee’s whistle or other distractions. This took a while to settle down and the results were mixed early in the season, however, as the teamwork improved so too did the results.

Turning point was away at UQ Junior Red Heavies where we let a game slip away due to ill-discipline and yellow cards. From then on, U13 Navy got better and better. Strong performances against Ipswich, Norths and GPS propelled the team into the finals. The coaching team were impressed how this young team thrived in the higher pressure games of knock-out finals. As a team, we improved not only on individual skills but revelled in each other’s successes. Each player in the squad contributed to the eventual Grand Final win over GPS (for 3rd time) at Ballymore. The structure, commitment and belief in the other team members was obvious to all. Bernie Hogan and Liam Ryan (Mgr) were assisted by so many parents throughout the year, particularly passing on his experience to the young forward pack.

U13 White U13 White had a great season that saw Coach Bayo continue to push the boys to play with confidence and enthusiasm and back each other through the games. Come the end of the first round of games, the team was well placed for a run to the finals and this continued with solid results in their games that saw the team qualify for the finals coming third in the division. Going into finals we were confidence of doing well having come close to beating both teams above us and having beat the team we were playing in the first semi three times through the season. Unfortunately it was not to be but the year was characterised by some amazing defence, particularly on the goal line, and a lot of new mates as the boys grew in stature and confidence throughout.

Thanks to Peter Bayo for his coaching and the managerial expertise displayed by Damien Walker.

Under 11 Green Another great year of development for a fantastic group of young men. We had a number of new players join the team in March and we quickly developed a very open skill based game program. Throughout the year we had some good wins and some tough losses which made the players more resilient. The most important part was the boys had fun both at training and in games. Thank you to all parents and players for their efforts throughout the year in particular our award winners Nelson Walmsley (Brothers Medallist), Ed Earnshaw, Oliver Kent and Alex Lamprecht (Team award winners) Matt Kaye Under 11 Gold Another great year for Gold, some highs and lows but it was how they never gave up that impressed me the most. Quite a few of the players have been at Brothers now since U6’s and they are more than ready for the U12 rules. I am looking forward to seeing them all back next year. Matthew Duane Under 11 Blue It was a very successful season for U11 Blue that saw 5 new players join the team in 2019. The boys finished equal first in their Division with some very close matches across the entire season. Cooper Knowles, was the well deserved winner of the Brothers Medal, with Gus Lyons receiving the award for best back, Kyna Te Patu best forward and Callum Brunello best and fairest. Of the four awards on offer, all of the boys except Callum were new to the team this year. All the boys played hard all season and significantly improved their positional play and ball skills, thanks to the dedication of coaches Lloyd Penrose and Jim Campbell. Thanks also to all the families that supported the team throughout the year at training and on weekends. Bron Humphrey Under 10 White The use of the team app was successful to communicate from Brothers/BJRU.

Families have said that although there were 2/3 training sessions with senior or reserve players, they would like to see more involvement with the coaching/development staff.

Many of our team attended the holiday clinics which they all enjoyed. This could have been further followed up or built upon if these senior coaches running the clinics then attending our practice session to help integrate the new skills some of the team learnt into the whole team.

Pass on our Congratulations on a successful year to all involved. Keira Geraghty Under 10 Green Use of the team app was very successful, generally means parents are well informed of activities directly from the club rather than relying on team managers etc to pass on info. Mark Creevey

Under 8 What a year!

This was the first year of tackle, rucks and mauls. It was challenging at first but our boys seem to get the hang of it, improving week by week. Feedback from the playing group is it would have been helpful for the club to implement a greater focus of assistance to the coaches to ensure the players are up to speed and not simply relying on two weeks training before playing matches again some clubs that had started their training some eight weeks earlier

The season ran smoothly, with minimal challenges presented from games, or Clubs we played. Game results seemed to indicate definite strength in some teams, and opportunity to improve in others. Most teams had a really enjoyable season, irrespective of the win/loss result which is pleasing to see – it means coaches and managers are imparting the right ethos with players and defining losses as opportunities to learn and grow.

This year saw seven teams being fielded and with some luck we can keep the numbers in this group consistent.

I would like to also give a huge thank you to all the Under 8 Manager, Coaches, Trainers, Referees and also all the other parents that volunteered for canteen duty, field Marshalling duties without your help the club wouldn’t run.

Looking forward to seeing you all again next year.

AGE GROUP REPORTS – Junior Division

Under 6 The youngest members of the club started their season with enthusiasm and by the end of the season had developed not only rugby skills but strong friendships and pride in wearing the blue and white. For some players this was their first taste of rugby and for some it was following in the footsteps of their older brothers, but everyone turned up to training and the games putting in 100% effort and willingness to show the Brother’s way.

Under 6 was made up of six teams in 2019, Under 6 Black, Green, Blue, White, Gold and Silver.

Under 6 Black U6 Black are to be commended on the grit and determination they displayed throughout the season. Week to week their skill and understanding of the game developed and more importantly, their love for the game of rugby. The sportsmanship and comradery showed to each other as well as the opposing teams was exceptional – they truly lived the Brothers way. Overall the team had lots of fun and are keen for the 2020 season to begin!

Under 6 Green Under 6 green or the Green Machine as they liked to call themselves worked hard in 2019 to improve their skills and learn what it meant to be part of a team. With a smaller team we had to regularly call upon the opposition to help out by providing extra players but the way the opposition team and Under 6 Green players worked together in these instances was commendable. Go Green Machine!

I would like to thank all the Under 6 parent volunteers who took on the role of coaches and managers in 2019. For some it was the first time being in these types of roles, but everyone took it in their stride and kept showing up week to week for their team. I would also like to thank the other parent’s in Under 6 who helped in the canteen, scored games, washed jerseys and filled in for the coach and manager when they were absent. It takes a strong community to keep the club running and everyone’s contribution is important.

I look forward to 2020 and watching our Under 6 cohort move to Under 7 and further develop their skills and love for Rugby. Michelle Carr Under 6 Age Group Coordinator 2019

Under 11 Mosman Tour Following from the success of the Under 12 Brothers tours to Mosman over the last four years, we were privileged to host 22 players and their families from Mosman Rugby Club in March for inaugural Under 11 tour. The tour involved games on Friday and Sunday, combined with social activities across the weekend. An integral part of the success of the tour is billeting, where lifelong friendships are formed. It was great to see bonds built between the teams over the weekend, with a lot of laughter on the field as the players battled it out against their billets. The Mosman players and supporters conducted themselves on and off the field with the utmost respect for their team, the opposition and the game of rugby. Despite Brisbane turning on a hot and humid weekend, Mosman were too good and were deserved winners of the Rawson Crosby trophy. Thanks to Matt Kaye for supporting the concept and marshalling the resources of the club. We look forward to hosting Mosman again next year.

Under 12 Mosman Tour The Under 12, 2019 Sydney Mosman Tour was a huge success with 37 players and 36 parents travelling interstate from 10th till 12th May. The tour group again travelled in style on a chartered Alliance jet and were welcomed at the Mosman Clubhouse by Brothers legend, John Eales. The Mosman Rugby Club, so ably led by Luke Hartman, were wonderful hosts and billeted the players for the weekend, while the parents stayed at the Harbourview Hotel in North Sydney. Brothers Eales and Shaw touring teams played spirited games against Norths representative team and Lane Cove at picturesque Balmoral Oval on the Saturday. On the Sunday, Brothers Eales and Shaw played Mosman Jellyfish and Stingrays for the John Eales Shield at Rawson Oval. Brothers were successful in retaining the John Eales Shield for 2019.

Under 13 New Zealand Tour The end of the season also saw a combined team from U13 head to NZ for a tour of Christchurch and Queenstown. With Randall Corless leading the touring group, the team played two games in Christchurch as a lead up to the tournament scheduled for Queenstown. Christchurch provided a full NZ rugby immersion experience with rain, storms and cold (and some boys who could have passed for U14 or 15 in the opposing teams) greeting the boys but good results were achieved before heading to Queenstown.

Queenstown provided a great experience for the boys and with Ritchie (the tour mascot) watching over the team, they finished second in their pool before being beaten by the eventual winners in the playoff to go into the final. With third place still on the line the boys fought hard however eventually went down finishing an outstanding fourth in the tournament.

Thanks must go to Randall for his time and effort in organising what was an excellent tour which had the right mix of rugby and other activities to keep the boys entertained across the week. Thanks also to the tour support crew and the parents that followed us across the ditch to barrack for the team.

Critical Accounting Estimates and Judgements

The Management Committee evaluate estimates and judgements incorporated into the financial statements based on historical knowledge and best available current information. Estimates assume a reasonable expectation of future events and are based on current trends and economic data, obtained both externally and within the Association.

Key estimates Inventories I. As a consequence of the amalgamation of the clubs and change in logos all inventories carrying the old club logos have been written off an represented in the Impairment Inventories. It is anticipated that these items will need to be sold at discounted rates r given away as part of club promotions.

Investments I. The club owns an asset being a perpetual membership at Ballymore. The historical cost of this asset is $10,000. The lack of a ready market for this asset and the diminishing economic benefits following he reduction on games being played at Ballymore an impairment loss of $9,999 has been raised to record the carrying value at $1. This determination will be reviewed annually, and adjustments made in future periods if future market activity or estimate of future economic benefit indicates that such adjustments are appropriate.

Property Plant & Equipment – useful life Buildings and leasehold improvements I. Crosby Park – during 2017 the Association signed a 10 year lease with Brisbane City Council. There is no expectation that the lease would not be renewed at the expiration of the lease term. As such the Management Committee consider a 50 year useful life appropriate for buildings and leasehold improvements. II. Windsor Park – in 2014 the previous junior Association signed a licence agreement with St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School for access to the shared grounds and facilities at Windsor Park for all U6 to U9 games and training, U10 to U12 training and Association events. The term of the agreement is 15 years and an annual licence fee is payable by 30 June of each year. There is no expectation that the lease would not be renewed at the expiration of the lease term.

Provisions Provisions are recognised when the association has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result of past events, for which it is probable that an outflow of economic benefits will result and that outflow can be readily measured.
