Riding 1British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham, NG12 5GG, United Kingdom *Corresponding author: e-mail: [email protected] (J.H. Powell) ABSTRACT Diamicton deposits (up to 6.90 m thick) in the Vale of Pickering and the Tabular Hills (North York Moors) have been confirmed by cored boreholes. The diamicton is interpreted as glacial till with a matrix consisting predominantly of grey-brown, yellow-brown and dark grey, stiff to very stiff clay and sandy clay with occasional thin beds of laminated sand and clay. Sub-rounded to sub-angular erratic clasts were sourced predominantly from local Upper Jurassic Corallian Group bedrock exposed in the southern part of the North York Moors. Clasts include well-rounded, pebbles of Jurassic sandstone, mudstone and sparse Jurassic coal derived from outcrops on the North York Moors. Fragments of underlying Upper Jurassic mudstone bedrock form the predominant clasts in the lower part of the till. The paucity of exotic clasts and a local derivation suggests a relatively small glacier - perhaps a temperate-plateau ice-field, was established on the Tabular Hills. The glacier subsequently advanced southwards to the Vale of Pickering depositing locally derived subglacial traction till at the base, passing up to lodgement till. Local preservation of the degraded till outcrops in the Vale of Pickering, the overconsolidated nature of the clay till matrix, striated pebbles and the presence of sub-rounded pebbles suggests deposition during a glacial cold stage post-MIS 12 (Anglian) and pre-MIS 2 (Devensian).

    WILLIAM FLETCHER (1889 - 1931) FLETCHER SURNAME This famous northern family name is believed to have derived from the Germanic pre 7th Century personal compound name "Fulcher". The introduction into England was probably by the Normans, and the name translates as "people's army" from "folk", plus "heri", army. The development from Fulcher to Fletcher is both dialectal and academic, and may have arisen as a result of recordings being undertaken by a lay person of limited ability, rather than the original clerks or scribes. The name as Fletcher is normally associated with arrow making: however, this is not always an acceptable explanation, the Fletcher being responsible for the equipping of the bowman, a medieval supply officer. Representative recordings of the family name include John Fletcher, who married Elizabeth Allen at Tettenhall, County Stafford, on December 30th 1606, and Simon Fletcher, baptised at Old Swinford, County Worcester, on September 10th 1659. The Coat of Arms of this branch of Fletcher is given as sable, a cross patonce between four escallops or, on a chief gules, a lion passant and a crescent for difference, both of the second. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert le Flecher, which was dated 1203, in the "Assize Court Rolls of Staffordshire", during the reign of King John, known as "Lackland", 1199 - 1216. The Fletcher name is recorded 34,143 times in the 1881 census. By the time of 1998 electoral roll there had been a increase in the number to 41,612. More detailed statistics are shown below.

    1 Cause Papers in the Diocesan Courts of the Archbishopric of York, 1300–1858 Editing and Standardisation in the Cause Papers Database The Cause Papers project provided an on-line searchable catalogue of more than 13,000 cause papers relating to cases heard between 1300 and 1858 in the Church Courts of the diocese of York, the original records for which are held at the Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York. The project aimed to pioneer a new standard of excellence in data accuracy and standardization. Cataloguing such a large and varied number of records posed numerous challenges in these areas, including the problem of how to incorporate spelling and language variations of surname and place names. The following document provides information on the methods used by the project team in compiling, editing and standardizing the data.
