Alla base di tutto questo sta non solo la reciproca stima, ma una vera passione per gli argomenti trattati. Se a questo si aggiunge una buona competenza informatica di elaborazione dati ed un buon gusto estetico non può che nascere un buon libro che spicca rispetto a tanti per la dovizia di belle immagini corroborate da una scelta puntuale ed esplicativa al massimo dell’eccellenza. Attualmente risiede in Belgio dove svolge attività come specialista nel settore cartografico utilizzando tecniche di trattamento di immagini satellitari e GIS. Le competenze acquisite nel settore del digital image processing, una buona dote artistica e la conoscenza di software di desktop publishing, hanno permesso di poter gestire l'organizzazione grafica nel museo BackToThePast di Cancun e parallelamente di creare decine IL libro del Museo di poster illustrativi relativi alle collezioni esposte. Oltre alla passione per questa classe di artro- podi, i suoi interessi sono orientati alle forme di vita vissute nel Precambriano. Carlo Kier nato a Milano nel 1961, si è laureato in Legge ed è attualmente presidente della catena Enrico Bonino di alberghi Azul Hotel a Cancun in Messico dove risiede, e dove si dedica ad attività legate all'ambiente marino. All'età di 16 anni, ha iniziato una lunga collaborazione con il Carlo Kier Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano, e dal 1970 prese inizio la vera passione per i trilobiti, con la collaborazione di Jake Skabelund e Dave Comfort dando avvio a quella che oggi è diventata una delle collezioni più importanti al mondo. La sua instancabile attività di ricerca sul terreno in varie parti del globo, e la collaborazione con professionisti del settore, ha permesso la descrizione di nuove specie di trilobiti ed artropodi. Una forte determinazione e la costruzione di un nuovo complesso alberghiero (AZUL Sensatori) hanno infine concretizzato la realizzazione di un sogno... il primo museo esclusivamente dedicato ai trilobiti del mondo, il museo BackToThePast. Oslo ISSN 0300-949l. ISBN 82-00-04963-9. The species Pl. (Placoparia) cambriensis, Pl. (Coplacoparia ) tournemini and Pl. (Coplacoparia ) borni, described by Hammann (1971) from the Spanish Ordovician, are found in Brittany in formations attributed to the Llanvirn and the LIandeilo. The lateral borders of the librigenae of Pl. (Coplacoparia) tournemini and Pl. (Coplacoparia ) borni bear depressions into which the distal ends of the thoracic pleurae and the tips of the first pair of pygidial ribs come and fit during enrollment. These depressions, or coaptative structures sensu Cuenot (1919), are also to be observed in Pl. (Placoparia) zippei and Pl. (Hawleia) grandis, from the Ordovician of Bohemia. However, in the species tournemini and borni, additional depressions appear on the anterior cephalic border, and the coaptations evolve towards an increasing complexity. From Pl. (Placoparia) cambriensis, an ancestrai form with a wide geographic distribution, two distinct populations se em to have individu· alised by a process of allopatric speciation; one of these, probably neotenous, is represented by Pl. (Coplacoparia ) tournemini (Massif Armoricain and Iberian Peninsula), the other by Pl. (Placoparia ) zippei (Bohemia). An easy-to-navigate pocket guide to the Meeting is also available to delegates. Venue The Annual Meeting will take place in the faculties of Philosophy and Philology on the Blasco Ibañez Campus of the University of Valencia. The Symposium will take place in the Salon Actos Manuel Sanchis Guarner in the Faculty of Philology. The main meeting will take place in this and a nearby lecture theatre (Salon Actos, Faculty of Philosophy). There is a Metro stop just a few metres from the campus that connects with the centre of the city in 5-10 minutes (Line 3-Facultats). Alternatively, the campus is a 20-25 minute walk from the ‘old town’. Characters are simply criteria for comparing homologous organismic parts between taxa. Homology of organismic parts in any phylogenetic study is an a priori assumption, founded upon topological similarity through some or all stages of ontogeny. Once homolo- gies have been suggested, characters are invented by specifying bases of comparison of organismic parts from taxon to taxon within the study group. Ideally, all variation in a single homology occurring within the study group should be accounted for. Comparisons are between attributes of homologous parts, (e.g., simple presence, size of some- thing, number of something), and these attributes are referred to as character states. Study taxa are assigned member- ship in one (or more, in the case of polymorphisms) character-state for each character in the analysis. A single char- acter now implies discrete groupings of taxa, but this in itself does not constitute a phylogeny. In order to suggest or convey phylogenetic information, the historical status of each character-state, and of the the group of taxa it sug- gests, must be evaluated. That is, in the case of any two states belonging to the same character, we need to discover whether one state is primitive (broadly speaking, ancestral) or derived (representative of an evolutionary innovation) relative to the other.

Learning Goals and Pedagogy This lab is designed for middle level General Science or Earth Science classes. The learning goals for this lab are the following: 1) to familiarize students with the anatomy and terminology relating to trilobites; 2) to give students experience identifying morphologic structures on real fossil specimens 3) to highlight major events or trends in the evolutionary history and ecology of the Trilobita; and 4) to expose students to the study of macroevolution in the fossil record using trilobites as a case study. Introduction to the Trilobites The Trilobites are an extinct subphylum of the Arthropoda (the most diverse phylum on earth with nearly a million species described). Arthropoda also contains all fossil and living crustaceans, spiders, and insects as well as several other extinct groups. The trilobites were an extremely important and diverse type of marine invertebrates that lived during the Paleozoic Era. They only lived in the oceans but occurred in all types of marine environments, and ranged in size from less than a centimeter to almost a meter across. They were once one of the most successful of all animal groups and in certain fossil deposits, especially in the Cambrian, Ordovician, and Devonian periods, they are extremely abundant.

Shales of the Šárka Formation exposed in the excavation on Červený vrch Hill at Praha-Vokovice contain a common but monotonous assem- blage of phyllocarids associated with other extremely rare arthropods. Almost all trilobite remains (genera Ectillaenus Salter, 1867, Placoparia Hawle et Corda, 1847 and Asaphidae indet.) occur in a single horizon of siliceous nodules of stratigraphically uncertain position, while the surprising occurrence of possible naraoid trilobite (Pseudonaraoia hammanni gen. n., sp. n.) comes from dark grey shales. The general character of the arthropod assemblage char- acterized by an expressive dominance of planktonic and/or epi-planktonic elements (phyllocarids) indicates a specific life environment (most probably due to poor oxygenation). This association corresponds to the assemblage preceding the Euorthisina-Placoparia Community sensu Havlíček and Vaněk (1990) in the lower portion of the Šárka Formation.
