More applause for V/C Linda Brent, Dean Kirschner, the Membership Committee and the staff: 6 new members for August. (See Vice Commodore’s column, page 4). DON’T FORGET the New Member Appreciation Reception on Wednesday September 13th at 5:30 at the Club. We have invited 45 new members, so let’s not let the new members outnumber the Board Members and the other members of our Club. All are welcome for drinks and hors d’oeuvres! Your Board is continuing to study the following items, just too name a few! • Non-Member Events vs. Member Events (Non-Member events generate income that keep dues low, but dues paying members need the use of the facility also). • Refurbishing of the Junior Yacht Club Building as well as big plans for the cleanup and redevelopment of our recently acquired white sand beach. • Cabana/s and/or Bar for the pool. • Final permitting of our Seawall and floating docks. • Further social outreach with the “Satori” and other Satori-owned boats. • Refurbishing of the men’s and lady’s restrooms. • Pursuit of a reciprocal golf course option for our golfing members. • Refurbishing the pool. The leadership of the Club is pursuing the next step in the development of our Strategic Plan. We are presently awaiting feedback from our consultants to move forward with the development of our final plan, which WILL BE presented to the Membership for their concurrence and approval. Thanks to our great treasurer, Tim Kane, our finances are in great shape, our expenditures are clearly within budget and he has so much cash in the bank, he doesn’t know what to do with it. Just kidding! We have plenty of big expenses coming up, but we will live WITHIN our means. Probably the most exciting news that you will read about all over this Jib Sheet is that we have been successful (with the help of Carol Patterson’s lawyer in New Orleans) in obtaining a visa for César Travado, who will be joining us during the first week in September. The Satori Leadership is excited, the Junior Sailing folks are excited and a few of us older members who want to learn how to sail are excited too. Your Executive Committee and our General Manager are attempting to tie down housing for César in an area convenient to the Pensacola Yacht Club. He will be a great addition to the staff. Please welcome him! Look forward to the entertainment that is coming up. Great Gatsby is the theme for the upcoming Ladies Dinner Dance Party – break out your Duisenberg from the warehouse! In addition, we have Labor Day Activities, as well as other events throughout the remainder of the year. At the General Membership Meeting on August 23rd the 4 members of the Nominating Committee were selected by the Membership. They are as follows: Jim Oyler, LeAnn Pickering, Tom Pace, and Bob Kriegel Additionally, the Board has selected Alan McMillan, Susan McKinnon, and Tim Burr, Chairman, as the three former Commodore Members. They will be soliciting nominations for the 2018 Leadership of the Pensacola Yacht Club. If you are a full member, please consider qualifying for office. Thank you again for your support and please help us build member numbers by telling your family members, friends, and business associates about all of the great benefits to be had by joining the “South’s Finest Yacht Club!” See you around the Club!

PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET VICE COMMODORE’S COMMENTS Linda Brent Meet our new PYC members …..

New Active Members: • Gregory M. Whibbs: Greg joins Pensacola Yacht Club as a legacy member. I am sure many of you remember seeing his father, Vince Whibbs and his mother, Anna, many times at PYC. Greg is a partner at Vince Whibbs Automotive and is also active in Pensacola Big Game Fishing Club, Tiger Point Golf Club, and has been the Catholic High sports announcer for the past twenty-two years, to name just a few of his many interests. He and his wife, Margaret, can be seen out enjoying our beautiful waters on their 50’7” Topaz Sportfish, “Swee’ Pea.” • Jeffrey E. Foshee: Jeff is in agricultural sales with Carolina Eastern of Pensacola. He enjoys being on the water in both power and sail boats. He currently has a 24’ Sea Hunt. Jeff is also active in the Fiesta of Five Flags.

New Social Members…. • Michelle Schuka: Michelle and her husband, Ed have 5 children, Alyssia, 11; Chad, 10; Anthony; 10; Joseph, 7; and Samantha, 6. Michelle grew up boating and they are all looking forward to all the activities at PYC. Michelle is a nurse, working at West Florida Hospital & Covenant Hospice. She is also active in the Elks Lodge and is a Boy Scout Leader. • Cheryl Raines: Cheryl and her husband, Thomas, have a daughter, Ava, who is 10. They are interested in all types of boating and water activities. Her occupation is human resources, currently working with Sacred Heart. She has family members who were once members of PYC and has many fond memories of visiting PYC with them as a child. • Merlyn S. Tidemann: Merl is transitioning from non-resident membership to social membership now that he and his lovely wife, Barbara, have moved to Pensacola full-time. Merl is retired but keeps active as a board member at Riviera 615 Condo Association. He and Barbara expressed an interest in getting involved in PYC’s race committee.

Non-Resident Members: • Jay D. Joines: Jay and his wife, Cathy, are from Auburn, KY. They love pleasure boating, fishing and sailing and are currently members of Commonwealth Yacht Club in Grand Rivers, KY. Jay is an attorney and has his practice, Joines Law Office in Russellville, KY.

Two of our members were granted leave-of-absence (for a total of 13) and one member resigned in August. PYC ended August with 545 members. There are 342 voting members and 203 non-voting members. Since January of 2017, PYC has gained 59 new members. This is a net increase in membership of 34 for 2017. Please make all of our new members welcome when you see them.

New Member Reception: A New Member Reception is being held on September 13th for these new members, and we look forward to further welcoming them into the PYC family.

Other comments: Kudos to the Florida Commodores Association for putting on a great leadership conference at St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club in Panama City. All of the presenters were very knowledgeable, and all of those attending left feeling better equipped to help their clubs. It was well worth my time to go.

Know someone interested in PYC membership? … Membership inquiries can be made through our PYC web site, or you can contact me at 572-2956 ([email protected]) or our membership liaison, Dean Kirschner at 554-2177 ([email protected]). Membership brochures and applications, which have the details of all the membership categories and cost of membership, are in the lobby of PYC near the stairs.

PAGE 4 | JIB SHEET FROM OUR REAR COMMODORE Denis & SATORI FOUNDATION PRESIDENT McKinnon • The restrooms have been remodeled, thanks again to the Ladies Hospitality Team. The Heri- tage Room is beautiful, thanks to Ginny and her team; the Lighthouse Room’s new windows have been installed and are awaiting shutters; the Junior Clubhouse has been repainted, and the interior has been cleaned up and rearranged, and the pool table is gone. • Unfortunately, the beach is again - trashy!!! We are working on it, trying to instill good work ethics in our kids and ADULTS! The beach renovation is still being discussed within the Long Range Planning Committee and at the Board level - lots of moving parts and opinions. I hope to have this put to rest before my tenure as Rear Commodore is up. • On another note, please be careful when utilizing the boat ramp, as the surface is very slippery. This is normal for a saltwater ramp, so take extra precautions. Greg will be installing signage as a reminder.

We have a very active group of volunteers on the Satori Advisory Board who are bringing great Ideas and programs designed to move us to the “ next level “ in our primary objective of training adults and children in the art of sailing and seamanship utilizing STEM principles. As you know, we have been very successful at providing outreach opportunities to many local organizations, such as Boys and Girls Club, Autism Society, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Sea Stars and several others. While this program has been successful in providing great opportunities, and quite frankly, life changing events for many of the participants, we realize that there is so much more that we can be doing to move the Foundation forward. Here are just a few things that are being worked on in that regard: a Speakers Bureau; a Satori Foundation Scholarship program; a Kids-Teaching-Kids program; an entertaining / instructional program to be utilized when the weather is inclement; a Teach-the-Teacher program (16 public schools teachers already signed up); and consideration for a Wounded Vets program. We are also developing a plan that will allow our Club Members to utilize our boats.

We welcome your participation and, as a matter-of-fact, it is vital to your Foundation’s success. If you want to, volunteer or have ideas, please contact Marguerite Burr or myself.

AUGUST TRIVIA REVEAL - JEFF HUNT! The August trivia photo was of fun-loving Jeff Hunt collecting one of his first of many trophies. Since then Jeff has purchased and successfully raced several boats, all with colorful names. His racing resume includes wins in almost every local race at one time or another, and he has been selected to represent PBYC or PYC in the Challenge Cup and Navy Cup almost every year. During the past couple of racing seasons Jeff’s name has been engraved on the Pensacola Bay Championship trophy and the PYC Club Champion trophy. If there was ever a silver cup to be awarded the “Winner of the Party,” then Jeff and his fun-loving crew would be on the podium every time. August’s winning sleuth for correctly identifying Jeff was, once again ----- LINDA OYLER! PAGE 6 | JIB SHEET WELCOME César! César Travado Rosado PYC Sailing Director

Pensacola Yacht Club is pleased to introduce you, our members, to our long anticipated new Sailing Director, César Travado. César is impeccably qualified for this position, as he not only possesses the skills, know-ledge, and experi- ence for the job, but he is also a “people person.” In César’s own words, his sense of humor and positive nature enable him to relate to persons at all levels and ages. This has been evident in his extensive experience in training and coach- ing children, young people and adults.

Born in Málaga, Spain, in the beautiful and famous province of Andalucía, César had access to the beautiful coastal waters of southern Spain. His sailing experiences are more than impressive and his résume is “heavy reading.” Having mastered the coastal waters of his native country, César’s ultimate dream of coaching abroad has come true! We hope that this will be a wonderful experience for César, his wife Soledad, and 2 ½ year old daughter, Isabel!”

César’s impressive coaching experience has given him extensive knowledge about tactics, strategy, equipment and technical skills. Most recently, he served as a member of the Board of Governors for the Class in Spain. Additionally, he served as a representative of the Organizing Authority for the Snipe European Champions held in Spain in 2016. He has a strong understanding of the rules of sailing and helps his teams learn them. He has served as Sailing School Director and Dockmaster for the REAL Club Mediterráneo between 2006 and 2015. In that position, he organized and lead the Sailing School from beginners to adults, coordinated registration, and designed and managed sailing programs and summer courses for approximately 200 people a year. In addition, César coordinated a team of 6 coaches, developed strong and positive communication with members and parents, supervised travel budgets, maintained the budget of the Sailing School, organized travel, and more! He served in the same capacity between 2002 and 2005 at the Club del Mar de Almeria, and between 2000 and 2002 at the Real Club Nautico de Adra.

César’s experiences and awards are many. For a complete list, ask to see his extensive résume. In the meantime, the following is a just a sampling of his successes: “Best Technician of Sailing Andalusian 2011” “World Junior Championship of the Snipe International Class” “Snipe Youth European Championships (twice)”

Well, we are certainly impressed with el señor César Travado, and anticipate that you will be, as well. Welcome to our wonderful family at the Pensacola Yacht Club, César.

Sailing into fall! The first day of fall, also known as the Autumnal Equinox is on Friday, September 22, 2017, at exactly 3:02 P.M. The word equinox means “equal night”; night and day are about the same length of time. During the equinox, the Sun crosses what we call the “celestial equator”. From here-on-out, the temperatures begin to drop and the Dave and crew days start to get shorter than the nights (i.e., hours of daylight decline). member Cali Fiesta of 5 Flags & PYC Past Commodore’s Race (see page 12 for photos) The Fiesta of 5 Flags Regatta benefitting the American Cancer Society was rescheduled not once and not twice, but three times before we finally had good weather to get it in. On Saturday August 5th, PYC hosted this regatta and combined it with the PYC Past Commodores Regatta on the same day. The sailing was great and the skippers and crews raised over a thousand dollars for the American Cancer Society… And something different for this year - the PYC Past Commodores were invited to join the race as crew aboard the racing boats! Predicted Log Race The PYC-to-Paradise Predicted Log Race was co-hosted by PYC, the Paradise Beach Bar and the Pensacola Beach RV Resort on August 12th. PYC Historian Tom Pace’s idea to re-enact the predicted log races of old had everyone excited about the concept of going a good part of the day without knowing for certain the time of day! Fifteen vessels of all different kinds turned out for this fun day on the bay. They came in cigarette speed boats, one-design sailing dinghies, motor yachts, trawlers, fishing boats, cruising boats and stand-up paddleboards! The contest was not about arriving first, but about using mariner skills to determine the length of time (without looking at a time instrument) that it would take your craft to get from point A: PYC to Point B: Paradise Beach. The competitors had to take into account the wind and currents and sea conditions to estimate the time it would take to arrive at the destination finish line. On this day, the finish line was Paradise where Tom and Katrina Pace recorded the exact time of arrival of each competitor. The competitor whose time of arrival was closest to their predicted time was declared the winner of the Predicted Log Race. And the winners are…

PYC Predicted Log Race Results: 1st Place – Bruce Cobia & Cynthia Cannon on “Safari” ($250 cash prize winners) 2nd – Tom & Katrina Pace on “Jupiter” 3rd – Julie Denton & Ronald Bray on “Night Sky”

Congratulations to all the competitors! The awards party on Paradise Beach was followed by food and festivities at the Pensacola Beach RV Resort’s Summer Block Party hosted by PYC’s own Commodore Jim Reeves. It was a special day where we all lost track of time for a little while and wound up in paradise together. Be sure to look for photos on your PYC website and Facebook pages.

(see Cruising Report) Preemie Cup Regatta The Preemie Cup Regatta, organized by the Sacred Heart Foundation and PBYC, was hosted by our Pensacola Yacht Club on Aug 26th. The Preemie Cup is unique in that it includes a sailing regatta along with a fishing tourney and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) relay racing all in one event! Wow! . . . and it was a ton of fun for everyone! Did you know the Preemie Cup has raised over $500,000 in donations for the Sacred Heart Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in its short history? And the events raised over $75,000 this year alone! These proceeds are used to help premature infants survive a shaky start in life and provide them with the care and support to grow up to be healthy children. We had an excellent turn out for this year’s Preemie Cup. Congratulations to the participants and thank you to the organizers and to PYC for the role you played in making this a most successful event.

Star Fish Cove is just east of the ranger house at Fort Pickens. Many of us old-timers have enjoyed this anchorage during day trips as a swim call spot but few have thought of it as an overnight anchorage and very few of us knew it had a name. Star Fish Cove is a delightful name for a delightful spot on the beach. It has deep water right up to a beautiful sandy beach. The beach is wide enough to set up our buffet tables, chairs, ice chests, and other essentials between the water’s edge and the weedy scrub growth. About a dozen boats and two-dozen people enjoyed the weekend with few clouds and a great northerly breeze that lasted throughout the night.

Dinner Saturday evening was delicious peel-and-eat shrimp with tasty sides, salads, and desserts. Sunday brunch, as always, was a perfect mix of “healthy-to-maybe-not-so-healthy.” We enjoyed berries and yogurt, eggs and sausage, and muffins and donuts. Of course the “bloodies” and Mimosas flowed freely as we waded and swam in the warm bay. If you missed this one, you missed a good one. Thank you Jules and Christopher for a great weekend.

Your next chance to attend an “official” raft-up will be September 8-9 when Julie and Brian Robbins play host at Fort McRee. I understand there is a birthday involved so we just might get some birthday cake. It promises to be a fun weekend at one of our favorite anchorages. See you there.

Who wants to stop sailing just because school starts? I think the kids start early chanting “I would rather be sailing”. The traveling teams have participated in Mississippi where Gil Hackel and Logan Mastaw competed in the west in the Galloway Regatta. James Simpkins, Ryley Riggs, and Addison Jones sailed up north in the Rock, Paper, Scissors Regatta held by the Birmingham Sailing Club. Coming up, we have the Wadewitz in Fairhope and the Chappell-Stitt right here at PYC for the juniors. The juniors will also be able to participate in some of the other GYA regattas as well.

I would like to take a moment to express my appreciation for the guidance Bert Rice has provided to our youth. As we all know, he has been instrumental in their development as young sailors. Unfortunately for us, he is pursuing new opportunities in Montgomery, Alabama. Thanks from us all, Bert.    Fortunately. we have new opportunities on the horizon, “a new watch on deck.” We are expecting a new Sailing Director next month, César Travado. He is a snipe champion and champion coach from Spain. He was part of our team’s success in the Junior Olympics. César relates well to not only the kids but the parents as well. He has charted a course for sailing all winter and spring, and we look forward to his arrival. (See page 7.)

Remember, the boats are available to all members. Please come and check out the boats while the water is still warm and the breeze is strong.

Our group made it to Sturgis in four days, stopping for lunch at the Central Barbeque in Memphis Tennessee, and riding the “Pig Trail” in Ar- kansas – touted as one of the top ten rides in the Country. The group over indulged in chicken wings the first two days – and swore off them on the third. Bob Kriegel’s new (to him) Harley got to know the Harley dealer in Kansas City – to have a transmission “fix”; but he got back to the group that night in time to go thru the Badlands National Park in South Dakota the next day. Sturgis was all it was touted to be; and, Jim Oyler acquired a new Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Limited there. The group did some great rides around Sturgis – riding the scenic roads around Mt Rushmore and Devil’s Tower National Parks as well as other scenic roads in South Dakota. Bob Kriegel went off on his own from there – riding to Washington State to circumnavigate the US and visit relatives in Washington and Arizona. Bob traveled thru more incredible areas – especially in Utah, venturing through the Natural Bridges National Park, and Monument Valley. He managed to get lost in an “ice storm” that caused him to descend into a valley via three miles of narrow gravel road with a 10% slope and numerous switchbacks! Bob covered over 7,000 miles during the trip! After Bob headed way west, the rest of the group also went west through Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana! They rode a total of 4,240 miles – including a couple of days in the rain on the way back and a single day best of 730 miles. All told, the group traveled thru 21 states. And, if there is interest, they will be delighted to talk – and show pictures – of their travels! Remember the upcoming rides: Darrel Harrison will lead a ride on September 30th, and Alan McMillian on October 22nd. We can schedule im- promptu rides whenever! Just let Bob Kriegel or Barbara Wade know!
