EDITORIAL COMMENT It might be considered unfair to attempt to sway opinion, at the IBA, as to who should receive the new ILR contract for Eastbourne/Hastings: However, we are not alone in hoping that the people of this area will receive a radio station which broadcasts from within, and not outside, the community. If Eastbourne/Hastings receives a station operating from outside the area, surely we can expect to hear some angry voices in the near future. One consolation is the fact that, by the end of the decade, Eastbourne/Hastings will be able to have their very own radio station(s) courtesy of The Radio Authority and stations that are local... Consequently our children are exposed to, or can potentially access more content, from a wider range of media, on an ever-expanding range of devices. ► But what media are New Zealand children consuming in 2014? How are they accessing it, and how often? ► What content do they love and seek out, and what might they be missing? ► What do parents allow and not allow, and what content do they want for their children? ► How often are children exposed to challenging content? Do they recognise it as ‘not for them’, and what do they do in response? ► What are parents doing to try to minimise this exposure? ► The 2014 Children’s Media Use Study aims to answer these questions. © Colmar Brunton 2014 4 © Colmar Brunton 2015 | PAGE 4 The 2014 media context The need to update our understanding of New Zealand children’s media behaviour is made more important by the ongoing rapid changes in the media landscape.

Television programmes, songs, music videos, programming for commercial radio and regional television, support for Radio New Zealand and community radio, and online projects, have all led to improved diversity on the airwaves. We choose our projects carefully, both to meet the requirements of the Broadcasting Act and to align with our values: innovation, diversity and value for money. The year saw our Christchurch stakeholders dealing with the tragedy of the earthquakes. We made a special effort to ensure Christchurch’s stories were recorded and preserved for all New Zealanders and to support our stakeholders as they began the process of recovery. We were also able to bring coverage of the Pike River Memorial Service to the rest of New Zealand.
