  • Stronger Business Together October 20, 2017
stronger business together October 20, 2017 Honourable Patty Hajdu Member of Parliament, Thunder Bay-Superior North Via email: [email protected] Mr. Don Rusnak Member of Parliament, Thunder Bay-Rainy River Via email: [email protected] Dear Minister Hajdu & Mr. Rusnak: TRANSPORT CANADA CHANGES TO FLIGHT CREW MEMBER WORK AND REST PERIODS Transport Canada is proposing to amend the Canadian Aviation Regulations in relation to Flight Crew Member Hours of Work and Rest Periods. Through discussions with local member airlines, the Chamber has become increasingly concerned with the negative impacts of these proposals on air service in Thunder Bay and across Northwestern Ontario. The changes proposed represent a one-size-fits-all approach that does not address the needs of regional/short-haul scheduled service providers and will cause significant hardship for many of the airlines that operate in communities across Northwestern Ontario. In addition, the twelve-month implementation timeline is insufficient to allow airlines enough time to procure and integrate the information technology that will be required to manage these complex scheduling regulations. The Chamber is concerned that these proposals may result in reduced air service, loss of good paying jobs, and declining economic opportunities for our city and region. We would welcome the opportunity to arrange a meeting with local airlines representatives who can outline their concerns and offer solutions that would ensure that regional/short-haul service providers are not disadvantaged by these regulatory changes. Thank you for your attention to our concerns. We look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Charla Robinson President c.
