India Abstract Family Horabagridae is peculiar among catfishes as it has been difficult to resolve the position of this family phylogenetically. This has been partly because of lack of detailed morphological data for members of this family. Here we describe osteology of Horabagrus brachysoma (Günther) based on cleared and counterstained specimens for bone and cartilage. We describe in fraorbital, hyoid and branchial skeleton characters. These observations have been compared with earlier observations. There are notable differences in anterior ceratohyal and parhypural, and second basibranchial bones. This study will be important in future studies. KEYWORDS: infraorbital, hyoid arch, branchial arch, skeleton. Introduction Genus Horabagrus Jayaram, 1955 is an endemic catfish found only in west flowing rivers of Western Ghats of India. The genus currently comprises of two valid species Horabagrus brachysoma (Günther, 1864) and H. nigricollaris(Pethiyagoda&Kottelat, 1994), both of which are threatened (Dahanukar et al. 2011). (With 6 Figures) (Rec. 8-III-1969) INTRODUCTION Many studies concerning the parent-young interactions in cichlid fishes have suggested that the parents communicate with the young by signalling them either through body movements or fin movements (BREDER, 1934 ; KUENZER & KUENZER, 1962; KIRCHSHOFER, 1953, MYRBERG, 1965 ; NOBLE & CURTIS, 1939; NOBLE, KUMPF & BILLINGS, 1938 ; WARD & BARLOW, 1967). These signals elicit various responses by the young, which have led to a variety of suggestions as to the possible function of these parental move- ments. The role most commonly ascribed to this signalling behavior is that it serves as a warning to the young fish. MYRBERG (1965) reported that the young of the mouthbreeding cichlid Pelmiatochromis guentheri (Sauvage) are induced to enter their parents' mouths following a rapid flickering of the pelvic fins, lateral jerking of the body, and partial erection of the dorsal fin. According to KIRCHSHOFER (1953), a similar behavior occurs in another mouthbreeding cichlid, Haplochrornis des f ontainesii. NMFS proposes to implement the specifications for fishing year 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 separately prior to each fishing year. The specifications pertain to ACLs for coral reef ecosystem fisheries in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ or federal waters; generally 3-200 nautical miles or nm) around American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam, and Hawaii, and a post-season AM to correct the overage of an ACL if it occurs. Because of the large number of individual coral reef ecosystem management unit species (CREMUS) in each island area, individual species were aggregated into higher taxonomic groups, generally at the family level. -
