The Social Role of Shanghainese in Shanghai
Robert D. Angus California State University, Fullerton Prestige and the local dialect: 1 The social role of Shanghainese in Shanghai Abstract. Shanghai lies in the Wu dialect area in east central China. Whereas Modern Standard Chinese is the prescribed national standard in instruction, broadcasting, and commerce, a specific variety that descended from Wu is the native language of the city. We are accustomed to finding that local varieties experience a diminution of prestige in such circumstances. The social and historical circumstances of Shanghai, however, uniquely create a situation in which this is not the case. In this paper I will briefly discuss the history of the city and its development, trace social attitudes (and ideas of prestige) on the part of its natives, show how the use of the local variety indexes social status and prestige among residents of the city, and provide evidence that the use of the native dialect of Shanghai is neither transitional nor restricted to the spheres heretofore considered Low in the typical diglossia situation. Introduction When a local, minority language is used alongside a national variety, especially when the national language is upheld as a standard, the local variety is generally seen to suffer in prestige. In a diglossia situation, as outlined by Ferguson in his groundbreaking article, the two varieties are complementarily distributed among social situations, and the prestige variety is identified as the one used in all AHigh@ circumstances. Most familiar, writes Ferguson, is the situation in California Linguistic Notes Volume XXVII No. 2 Fall, 2002 2 which “many speakers speak their local dialect at home or among family or friends of the same dialect area but use the standard language in communicating with speakers of other dialects or on public occasions” (1959:325). -

China As an Issue: Artistic and Intellectual Practices Since the Second Half of the 20Th Century, Volume 1 — Edited by Carol Yinghua Lu and Paolo Caffoni
China as an Issue: Artistic and Intellectual Practices Since the Second Half of the 20th Century, Volume 1 — Edited by Carol Yinghua Lu and Paolo Caffoni 1 China as an Issue is an ongoing lecture series orga- nized by the Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum since 2018. Chinese scholars are invited to discuss topics related to China or the world, as well as foreign schol- ars to speak about China or international questions in- volving the subject of China. Through rigorous scruti- nization of a specific issue we try to avoid making generalizations as well as the parochial tendency to reject extraterritorial or foreign theories in the study of domestic issues. The attempt made here is not only to see the world from a local Chinese perspective, but also to observe China from a global perspective. By calling into question the underlying typology of the inside and the outside we consider China as an issue requiring discussion, rather than already having an es- tablished premise. By inviting fellow thinkers from a wide range of disciplines to discuss these topics we were able to negotiate and push the parameters of art and stimulate a discourse that intersects the arts with other discursive fields. The idea to publish the first volume of China as An Issue was initiated before the rampage of the coron- avirus pandemic. When the virus was prefixed with “China,” we also had doubts about such self-titling of ours. However, after some struggles and considera- tion, we have increasingly found the importance of 2 discussing specific viewpoints and of clarifying and discerning the specific historical, social, cultural and political situations the narrator is in and how this helps us avoid discussions that lack direction or substance. -

A pressing issue now is to discover ways in which to advance the toilet revolution, enhance the overall standard of tourist and public services, and promote structural reforms among tourism providers. • For a long time, the quality of toilets in China has been hindering the development of tourism. Among the tourism services on offer, foreign tourists have been especially opinionated and dissatisfied with the toilets, while also resigning themselves to their low quality. -

Chinese Letters and Intellectual Life in Medieval Japan: the Poetry and Political Philosophy of Chūgan Engetsu
Chinese Letters and Intellectual Life in Medieval Japan: The Poetry and Political Philosophy of Chūgan Engetsu By Brendan Arkell Morley A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Japanese Language in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor H. Mack Horton Professor Alan Tansman Professor Paula Varsano Professor Mary Elizabeth Berry Summer 2019 1 Abstract Chinese Letters and Intellectual Life in Medieval Japan: The Poetry and Political Philosophy of Chūgan Engetsu by Brendan Arkell Morley Doctor of Philosophy in Japanese University of California, Berkeley Professor H. Mack Horton, Chair This dissertation explores the writings of the fourteenth-century poet and intellectual Chūgan Engetsu 中巌円月, a leading figure in the literary movement known to history as Gozan (“Five Mountains”) literature. In terms of modern disciplinary divisions, Gozan literature straddles the interstices of several distinct areas of study, including classical Chinese poetry and poetics, Chinese philosophy and intellectual history, Buddhology, and the broader tradition of “Sinitic” poetry and prose (kanshibun) in Japan. Among the central contentions of this dissertation are the following: (1) that Chūgan was the most original Confucian thinker in pre-Tokugawa Japanese history, the significance of his contributions matched only by those of early-modern figures such as Ogyū Sorai, and (2) that kanshi and kanbun were creative media, not merely displays of erudition or scholastic mimicry. Chūgan’s expository writing demonstrates that the enormous multiplicity of terms and concepts animating the Chinese philosophical tradition were very much alive to premodern Japanese intellectuals, and that they were subject to thoughtful reinterpretation and application to specifically Japanese sociohistorical phenomena.
