4 Scouting in Central Florida WHAT IS THE CENTRAL FLORIDA COUNCIL? For more than 100 years, Scouting has helped build future SCOUTING LINGO leaders by combining educational activities and lifelong Scouting is an impressive program with many facets, new innovations, and great traditions. SCOUTING PROGRAMS CUB SCOUTS is a year-round family and home-centered program that develops ethical decision-making skills for youth in kindergarten through fifth grade. Activities emphasize character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.

SCOUTS BSA is a year-round program for youth 11 through 17 designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster.

VENTURING is a year-round program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age to provide positive experiences through exciting and meaningful youth-run activities that help them pursue their special interests, grow by teaching others, and develop leadership skills.

EXPLORING is a career education program for young men and women who are between 14 and 21 years old. Exploring is all about helping young adults make more informed decisions about future careers and determining if a particular career is right for them. Through our program, youth will take part in hands-on career experiences in fields they are interested in learning more about. 5 scoutingevent.com The Central Florida Council utilizes online event registration through scoutingevent.com. This system was created by Scouters for Scouters and is very user friendly. This system is ideal for registering your whole unit for an event, or just your family. You can create a MyRoster account which will save your information so you don’t have to re-enter everything for each event. Signing up for the great events across the council is quick and easy!

REGISTER YOUR WHOLE UNIT OR JUST YOU! Is your pack coming to Cub Scout Halloween? Is your Troop coming to The BEAST? Scoutingevent.com makes it easy to register your whole unit for events! When you use your MyRoster account to register, the participant information you enter for events can be used for future events so you don’t have to enter the entire unit’s information for every single event.

As the Registrant Contact for an event, you have access to reports to help keep track of your unit and make sure everyone is registered and ready for a great event.

NEW FEATURES FOR SUMMER CAMP A great feature is the PARENT PORTAL. The Registrant Contact can activate this in the registration so parents can enter the information for their scouts, select classes, and make payments for camp! Utilizing the PARENT PORTAL and the reports available through this system, Unit Leaders and parents can see how their Scouts are doing throughout the week in their Merit Badge classes! After camp is done, Unit Leaders can even print the blue cards for each Scout!

6 CAMP LA-NO-CHE EVENTS 2021-2022 Located at the Leonard and Marjorie Williams Scout Reservation, Camp La-No-Che is a year round, 1,600 acre camp operated by the Central Florida Council. We have great activities for all programs throughout the year that have been planned and organized by our council volunteers and professional staff. All that’s missing from them is you! Your Pack can plan a fall picnic and pool party using one of the activity shelters, or your Troop or Crew can plan a weekend camp out using one of our over 25 campsites! Camp La-No-Che is your home away from home!

Here’s how it works…it’s as easy as 1-2-3!

STEP 1: Go to CAMPLANOCHE.COM/RESERVE-CAMP

STEP 2: Choose your facility and choose your booking date The booking system allows you to book by preferred date, or by preferred facility, giving you options. Click the “Reserve ” button to get started by date; choose the facility from the listed categories to begin based on facility preference. Each facility will have a specific pricing scale for your group, and may require a deposit to reserve. If a facility is not available during your preferred date(s) the calendar will display an “X” in place of the date. By clicking the date(s) you would like to reserve each facility, your booking will be moved into accessible in the upper right corner.

PRO TIP If you plan on booking just one facility, like a single campsite for a weekend, it is easiest to do that by first selecting your preferred site and then the date. If you plan on booking multiple facilities in a single booking (maybe several campsites, or a site and the pool) you should begin by selecting your date first by clicking the “Reserve” button.

STEP 3: Checkout! Once you have locked in each facility for your preferred date, click the Shopping Cart at the top-right of the page and follow the instructions, entering in Unit details, contact info, and estimated* youth and adults attending. At the time of booking, only a non-refundable site deposit will be required. Site deposits can be paid for using eCheck or Credit Card**. Unit bookings can be made up to 12 months in advance. Some availability may be limited due to planned Council or District events. Final attendance will be collected at check in and per person pricing will be adjusted. 13 Training for Leaders Training provides knowledge, skills, and best practices a leader needs to better understand his or her role in providing an effective and worthwhile program to youth. Trained leaders are more confident and better prepared to deliver engaging and FUN adventures – while having fun themselves! Adult leader training is divided into levels. The Central Florida Council training team offers many of the courses available at the different levels as live, group training sessions. Read on to learn more about these levels, and the training needed to be considered basic leader trained.

JOINING COURSE WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BE A TRAINED LEADER? Youth Protection Training is a joining requirement for YOUTH POSITION SPECIFIC all registered adults and must be retaken every two POSITION years. The key to maintaining and improving this exemplary record is the conscientious and trained adult leader who is attentive to safety concerns. THE GUIDE TO SAFE SCOUTING Available in print, downloadable pdf, online, and even in a mobile app, The Guide to Safe Scouting prepares members of the Boy Scouts of America to conduct Scouting activities in a safe and prudent manner. AGE-APPROPRIATE GUIDELINES FOR SCOUTING ACTIVITIES CHART Age- and rank-appropriate guidelines have been developed based on many factors. When planning activities outside of program materials or handbooks, ask this question: Is the activity appropriate for the age and for Scouting?

THE SWEET 16 OF BSA SAFETY As an aid in the continuing effort to protect participants in a Scout activity, the BSA National Health and Safety Committee has developed the “Sweet Sixteen” of BSA safety procedures for physical activity. These 16 points, which embody good judgment and common sense, are applicable to all activities and are included in The Guide to Safe Scouting and are viewable online at Scouting.org/ScoutingSafely.

THE RISK ZONE: TRANSPORTING SCOUTS SAFELY The #1 cause of preventable injury in the BSA is not our aquatics, climbing, shooting, or camping programs; it is the travel to and from these programs. The Risk Zone is a presentation based training focused on attentive driving. This presentation will educate the participants on ways to prevent distractions and fatigue while driving as well as provide information on SUVs and vans, traveling with trailers, and insurance information. The Boy Scouts of America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. To maintain such an environment, the BSA has developed numerous procedural and leadership selection policies and provides parents and leaders with resources for the Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, and Venturing programs. Youth Protection training is required for all BSA registered volunteers. Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer’s Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be re-registered.

15 Funding Your Program The aims and methods of Scouting instruct that a Scout be thrifty and that they pay their own way for program and activities. Scouts learn the value of money and hard work by earning the money to pay for things. But they didn’t join Scouting to do fundraising! The fundraising have a purpose and the purpose is to raise a targeted number of dollars to do something else.

Different families have different resources at their disposal. Some families may not need to participate in fundraising at all. Others in the same unit might need additional opportunities to raise funds. Troops, Packs and Crews pull together and enjoy activities as a group rather than individually. This calls for a unified approach to planning and funding the activities.

The very first Journey to Excellence objective is Planning and Budget as it relates to fundraising. Gold level units involve the youth in producing a program plan and budget that is reviewed and approved by a committee that regularly meets. The natural outgrowth of this planning process should be consensus of youth and adult members on nature of the program for the coming year and the nature of the fundraising to accomplish it. Scouting families should enthusiastically embrace the fundraising process for what it is and what it accomplishes.

POPCORN With over 70% of the Popcorn sale going to support Scouting, there is no other fund raiser with that high of a return, and the majority of the money going directly to your unit. Up to 35% goes straight to local units in form of commission, prizes for your Scouts, and sales materials. The remaining 35% goes to support Camp La-No-Che, Volunteer Service Center, and the other indirect support provided for your Scouting program. The sale begins in August and ends in November. Sign up starts in May.

CAMP CARDS The Camp Card sale is designed specifically to help Scouts earn funds to offset the cost of their Scouting experience. Units participating in this program can earn up to 40% commission for each Camp Card they sell. Sales begin in January and end in April.

UNIT MONEY EARNING APPLICATIONS A unit must submit a Unit Money Earning Application to the council prior to any non-council sponsored fundraiser. The application is available from the Volunteer Service Center and should be submitted to the office or District Executive at least two weeks prior to the start of the fundraiser. Whenever your unit is planning a money-earning project, be sure to refer to the BSA’s “Guide to Unit Money Earning Projects” as your guide. It will be helpful to you as you fill out the application. If your answer is yes to all the questions in this document, it is likely the project conforms to Scouting’s standards and will be approved. For more information consult your District Executive.

16 Journey to Excellence Journey to Excellence, or JTE, is a recognition program for your unit that helps you measure how well you are doing in the key items that give Scouts a great experience. It is another tool for your toolbox to help build a stronger unit. When used, this tool can help you build a stronger unit and be recognized for your efforts. The three recognition levels are Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

Program Volunteer Leadership Each area has its own measurements that are indicators of a strong unit. By keeping an eye on these areas, it will in turn help you build a stronger unit. And the good news is by using this unit annual planning guide to plan your year, you are already on your way to achieving JTE Gold!
