Reebok Stadium, Bolton Wednesday, 14 December 2005 - 19:45 local time Group H - Matchday 5

Bolton Wanderers FC are hoping to continue their impressive start to their first season of European football. A point in the home game against already-qualified Sevilla FC will see Bolton reach the Round of 32 draw but a defeat will send anxious glances towards how Beşiktaş JK have done at Vitória SC. If Bolton lose they must hope Beşiktaş have not won, or if the Turkish team prevail that they have not moved ahead on goal difference; currently Bolton are +1 and Beşiktaş are 3.

• Current Group H leaders FC Zenit St. Petersburg have completed their fixtures, so both Bolton and Sevilla would win the pool if they gain three points. A draw would give Sevilla first place, Zenit second and Bolton third, the position in which the Spanish side would finish if they lost. • In their first season in the UEFA Cup, Bolton are unbeaten in their five matches, and have won both of their home games. The Premiership club beat first round opponents PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 21 at the Reebok stadium with two late goals, and in their first home group game, overcame Zenit by 10 on a waterlogged evening with a Kevin Nolan winner. On their travels they won 21 at Plovdiv and in Group H have drawn at Beşiktaş and Guimarães both teams coming from behind.

• Sevilla, who coincidentally also qualified from Group H last season, defeated Germany's 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the first round 20 on aggregate winning by that margin away after a goalless home game. They began the group stage with a 30 home win against Beşiktaş and then lost 21 at Zenit before overcoming Guimarães 31 to go through.

• This is Sevilla's first meeting with English opposition in UEFA competition, though this season their city neighbours Balompié took on both Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC in their UEFA Champions League group. This is European debutants Bolton's first encounter with a Spanish club. • Though Bolton are newcomers to European football, their opponents have been playing in competitions the third season of continental competition. The Spanish club entered the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs' Cup and in their first tie took the notable scalp of SL Benfica with a 31 home success and a 00 draw in the return leg at Lisbon. • After progressing past Danish club AGF Århus in the second round, Sevilla found their Spanish neighbours Real Madrid CF in uncharitable mood in the quarterfinals. An 80 win, with Alfredo Di Stefano scoring four times, put paid to Sevilla's chances though the Andalusians did manage a 22 home draw in the return leg.

Team facts: Bolton • Bolton and US Città di Palermo are the clubs from the 40 who are participating in the group stage of this season's UEFA Cup whose campaign is their first UEFA club competition. • Bolton entered the competition after finishing sixth in last season's English Premiership. • The English side overcame PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1936 in the first round of the competition. They won 21 in Plovdiv before recording the same result in the home leg. Georgi Iliev put Plovdiv ahead in the opening match after 52 minutes, but an Alexandar Tunchev own goal after 79 minutes restored parity before Kevin Nolan scored Bolton's winner four minutes from time. The Bulgarian side also took the lead in the second leg at the Reebok stadium courtesy of Boban Janchevski's effort after 27 minutes. Bolton equalised after 72 minutes through El Hadji Diouf before Jared Borgetti scored the winner on the night one minute into second half stoppage time. • Bolton held Beşiktaş JK to a 11 draw at the Inönü stadium on the opening matchday of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage as Jared Borgetti’s goal after 29 minutes cancelled out a strike of equal brilliance from the Turkish side's Brazilian forward Ailton who had given the home side an eighthminute lead.

• The English side then made home advantage count on Matchday 2 as Kevin Nolan scored the only goal of the game against FC Zenit St. Petersburg at the Reebok stadium. The Bolton captain reacted quickest to a rebound in the 24th minute to slot the ball past Kamil Čontofalský in Zenit's goal. • Portuguese substitute Ricardo Vaz Té salvaged a point for Bolton as their Matchday 3 fixture at Vitória SC came to a dramatic conclusion. The 19yearold found the target with three minutes remaining, finishing with a fierce drive after a neat layoff from El Hadji Diouf. The game had burst into life just three minutes earlier as striker Marek Saganowski opened the scoring with a tremendous diving header for Guimarães.

• Prior to Matchday 5 of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage, Bolton had played five matches in UEFA club competition. In that time the English club have won three times and drawn twice with seven goals scored against four conceded.

Team facts: Sevilla • Sevilla are involved in their second consecutive season of UEFA club competition action. • Overall, the Spanish club have participated in eight separate seasons of UEFA club competitions having marked their first appearance with a 31 defeat of SL Benfica in the preliminary round of the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs’ Cup. • The Spanish side’s best season in UEFA club competitions to date came in the same season as they advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup.

Having overcome SL Benfica, Sevilla defeated AGF Århus 42 on aggregate before losing 80 away to defending holders and Spanish rivals, Real Madrid CF. Sevilla salvaged some pride in the return leg, taking a twogoal lead through José Maria Paya (22) and Antonio Pahuet (29) before Madrid hit back to restore parity.

• They are one of ten clubs featuring in the UEFA Cup group stage for the second consecutive season. The full list is: FC Steaua Bucuresti, Middlesbrough FC, FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, AZ Alkmaar, FC Basel 1893, SC Heerenveen, VfB Stuttgart, FC Zenit St. Petersburg, Beşiktaş JK and Sevilla. • Sevilla entered the 2004/05 UEFA Cup at the first round stage and advanced to the group stage before elimination at the round of 16 point. The Spaniards won four of their five home games, but were held to a scoreless draw by Parma FC in the round of 16 before losing 10 in Italy thanks to Giuseppe Cardone’s 19thminute goal. Earlier in the competition, Sevilla had defeated Greek side Panathinaikos FC in the round of 32, losing 10 in Athens before winning 20 at home thanks to two goals in the last seven minutes from Ariza Makukula (83) and Adriano Correia (90+2). • Sevilla finished in sixth position in last season’s Spanish Primera División albeit 24 points adrift of title winners, FC Barcelona. Their crosscity rivals Real Betis Balompié finished two points ahead of Sevilla to claim fourth place and a place in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. • Sevilla booked their place in the group stage by overcoming German side 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the UEFA Cup first round. The opening leg in Spain ended scoreless, but Sevilla made their mark quickly in the return leg as two first half goals from Frédéric Kanouté (9, 40) without reply confirmed their participation in the group stage of the competition for the second consecutive season. • The Spanish side opened their account in the group stage on Matchday 2 with a convincing home victory against Beşiktaş JK. Substitute Frédéric Kanouté (65, 89) was on target twice in a 30 win after Javier Saviola had opened the scoring after 64 minutes. • On Matchday 3, Aleksandr Kerzhakov struck twice to give FC Zenit St. Petersburg victory against Sevilla and put the Russian side on the brink of qualification for the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup. The Russian international opened the scoring after 11 minutes and then doubled the home team's advantage in the 89th minute. There was still time for Javier Saviola (90+3) to pull a goal back, however, and only a fine save from Zenit goalkeeper Kamil Čontofalský prevented the Primera División side from scraping a point. • Sevilla made sure of their safe passage into the last 32 of the UEFA Cup after a comfortable win against Vitória SC at the Estadio Ramón SánchezPizjuán on Matchday 4, which ended the Portuguese outfit's own hopes of progress. All the goals came in the first half as onloan Argentinian forward Javier Saviola (10, 27) struck twice and Adriano Correia (39) added a third to send the Spanish side through from Group H with one game to spare. For Guimarães, who scored what proved to be a consolation goal

through Selim Benachour (44) moments before halftime, the defeat proved to be the final nail in their UEFA Cup coffin. • To date, Sevilla have played 41 matches in UEFA club competitions.

Domestic news Guimarães grateful to Benachour (Monday, 12 December 2005) Vitória SC were the only side to claim maximum points from the weekend's action as all three of their UEFA Cup Group H rivals who were in action squandered leads. Bolton Wanderers FC conceded late on to finish with a point, while Sevilla FC and Beşiktaş JK both led before falling to defeats.

Bolton Wanderers FC 11 Aston Villa FC Bolton's eightgame winning streak at the Reebok Stadium in all competitions came to an end after the Lancashire side finished allsquare with Aston Villa. With only Henrik Pedersen (achilles) absent, Sam Allardyce kept faith with the side that had defeated Arsenal FC a week before and, after dominating proceedings, his team looked to be heading for a deserved win when El Hadji Diouf struck with eight minutes remaining. However, Bolton failed to hold on to a lead for the first time at home this season, as substitute Juan Pablo Angel prodded in his first goal of the season to rescue a point for the visitors in the 88th minute. "We always knew our home run would come to an end at some stage but I am disappointed to drop two points to Villa," said Allardyce. "It was the manner of their goal that annoyed me. No one picked up Angel. We only played at 80 per cent of our capacity. But I still feel we did enough to win. I don't think Villa offered much."

FC Barcelona 21 Sevilla FC Sevilla lost a onegoal lead to become the eleventh consecutive side to suffer defeat at the hands of Spanish champions Barcelona. Frédéric Kanouté had given the visitors a 62ndminute lead but only minutes later Barcelona equalised through Samuel Eto'o before conceding again with 13 minutes remaining, when Ronaldinho beat Andrés Palop from just inside the penalty area.

Pablo Ruiz (knee) was Sevilla's only injury casualty ahead of the match, though Daniel Alves also had to sit out the fixture through suspension. Enzo Maresca, however, was given permission to play after having his own ban rescinded. "We're a bit sad because we lost, though the team worked hard and deserved more than they got," said coach Juande Ramos. "We controlled the game in the way we wanted and if Barcelona had not scored so soon after our goal, then I think it would have been a different match altogether. The difference was that Barcelona made the most of their chances better than we did." FC Penafiel 01 Vitória SC Guimarães recorded only their fourth Portuguese Liga victory of the season with a crucial win at bottom side Penafiel, Selim Benachour providing a dramatic conclusion to the game with the only goal in the 89th minute. The Tunisian midfield player collected Targino's pass and earned his side victory with a rightfoot shot. The strike was reward for an allaction display from Benachour, who caused the Penafiel defence no end of

problems. In the first game since Jaime Pacheco's departure as coach of the Guimarães side, the away team were guided by former players Neno and Basílio, who were already at the club. "This moment is for the players and for the supporters," said Neno. "I want to dedicate this win to former coach Pacheco and to all the coaching staff who left the club." Benachour, meanwhile, added: "If I played well I have to say thanks to all the players. I want to dedicate this goal to Pacheco; the fight goes on and we will wait for another coach. The Beşiktaş game will be very important for us." Galatasaray SK 32 Beşiktaş JK

Beşiktaş lost to Istanbul rivals Galatasaray SK on Saturday, suffering their second derby defeat of the season despite leading twice through İbrahim Toraman goals. Despite the result, Beşiktaş remained in fourth in the Turkish Super League. "Our team played a successful first half but although we decided keep things tight in our own half and not press forward too much, Galatasaray's influential pressing forced us to do so in the second half," said Beşiktaş coach Jean Tigana. "We should have been more influential in the attack. Everything was decided within five minutes."

Tigana was dealt a big blow with the news that Mustafa Doğan will be out of action for two weeks due to a broken hand, while İbrahim Akın will miss a similar period of time due to calf injury. Mustafa underwent a hand operation on Sunday but both players will miss both the UEFA Cup match against Guimarães and the league game against Trabzonspor on Sunday.

FC Zenit St. Petersburg

Zenit, like their Russian counterparts FC Lokomotiv Moskva, did enough from their four group games to have already assured qualification to the Round of 32 from Group H. Despite the club leading the section going into Matchday 5 Zenit cannot finish top, with that position going to either Sevilla or Bolton, depending on the result between the teams when they meet on Wednesday.

The club have received a boost with key Russian internationals Andrei Arshavin and Aleksandr Kerzhakov, who were both expected to move in the winter break, committing themselves to new contracts. Zenit fans can expect more good news soon with coach Vlastimil Petržela promising "major, shocking changes" over the winter break.
