Bolton Wanderers FC v Sevilla FC PRESS KIT Reebok Stadium, Bolton Wednesday, 14 December 2005 - 19:45 local time Group H - Matchday 5 Bolton Wanderers FC are hoping to continue their impressive start to their first season of European football. A point in the home game against already-qualified Sevilla FC will see Bolton reach the Round of 32 draw but a defeat will send anxious glances towards how Beşiktaş JK have done at Vitória SC. If Bolton lose they must hope Beşiktaş have not won, or if the Turkish team prevail that they have not moved ahead on goal difference; currently Bolton are +1 and Beşiktaş are 3. • Current Group H leaders FC Zenit St. Petersburg have completed their fixtures, so both Bolton and Sevilla would win the pool if they gain three points. A draw would give Sevilla first place, Zenit second and Bolton third, the position in which the Spanish side would finish if they lost. • In their first season in the UEFA Cup, Bolton are unbeaten in their five matches, and have won both of their home games. The Premiership club beat first round opponents PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 21 at the Reebok stadium with two late goals, and in their first home group game, overcame Zenit by 10 on a waterlogged evening with a Kevin Nolan winner. On their travels they won 21 at Plovdiv and in Group H have drawn at Beşiktaş and Guimarães both teams coming from behind. • Sevilla, who coincidentally also qualified from Group H last season, defeated Germany's 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the first round 20 on aggregate winning by that margin away after a goalless home game. They began the group stage with a 30 home win against Beşiktaş and then lost 21 at Zenit before overcoming Guimarães 31 to go through. • This is Sevilla's first meeting with English opposition in UEFA competition, though this season their city neighbours Real Betis Balompié took on both Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC in their UEFA Champions League group. This is European debutants Bolton's first encounter with a Spanish club. • Though Bolton are newcomers to European football, their opponents have been playing in competitions the third season of continental competition. The Spanish club entered the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs' Cup and in their first tie took the notable scalp of SL Benfica with a 31 home success and a 00 draw in the return leg at Lisbon. • After progressing past Danish club AGF Århus in the second round, Sevilla found their Spanish neighbours Real Madrid CF in uncharitable mood in the quarterfinals. An 80 win, with Alfredo Di Stefano scoring four times, put paid to Sevilla's chances though the Andalusians did manage a 22 home draw in the return leg. uefa.com 1/16 Bolton Wanderers FC v Sevilla FC PRESS KIT Team facts: Bolton • Bolton and US Città di Palermo are the clubs from the 40 who are participating in the group stage of this season's UEFA Cup whose campaign is their first UEFA club competition. • Bolton entered the competition after finishing sixth in last season's English Premiership. • The English side overcame PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1936 in the first round of the competition. The Bolton captain reacted quickest to a rebound in the 24th minute to slot the ball past Kamil Čontofalský in Zenit's goal. • Portuguese substitute Ricardo Vaz Té salvaged a point for Bolton as their Matchday 3 fixture at Vitória SC came to a dramatic conclusion. The 19yearold found the target with three minutes remaining, finishing with a fierce drive after a neat layoff from El Hadji Diouf.
