Gee Walker, 49, watched as Paul Taylor, 20, and Michael Barton, 17, pleaded not guilty to killing Anthony in Huyton, Merseyside, in July. A-level student Anthony, 18, right, was bludgeoned with an axe. Taylor and Barton also deny conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm to Anthony and to his cousin Marcus Binns. Yesterday's hearing was held at Preston Crown Court and a jury of people from the Preston area was selected. From today the trial will be held at Liverpool Crown Court. The judge Mr Justice Leveson told the court that selecting out-of-town jurors for such high-profile cases was not unusual. The trial is expected to last for two weeks. All rights reserved. A COUSIN of soccer star Joey Barton yesterday dramatically admitted the axe murder of black teenager Anthony Walker. Paul Taylor, 20, far left, changed his plea to guilty just before the trial at Liverpool Crown Court. The Manchester City player's relative admitted attacking Anthony, left, in Huyton, Merseyside, in July. Anthony, an 18-year-old A-level student was set upon in a park as he walked home with his girlfriend and cousin. He died later in hospital. In court the jury formally returned a guilty verdict on jobless Taylor on a direction from judge Mr Justice Leveson. As a result Taylor, of Huyton, will not face a charge of conspiracy to cause Anthony and his cousin Marcus Binns, 17, grievous bodily harm. The killer will be sentenced at the end of the trial of a second defendant, Michael Barton, 17 -brother of Premiership star Joey -who denies murder. The trial of the Huyton teenager is due to begin today. (C) The Sun, 2005 Document THESUN0020051117e1bg0000l Page 4 of 77 © 2017 Factiva, Inc. All rights reserved. Court hears how mountaineer's pick was driven 7cms into Anthony's skull THE fearsome axe which killed A-level student Anthony Walker was buried up to SEVEN CENTIMETRES deep in his skull, a court heard yesterday. Anthony, 18, was struck "with considerable force" on the left side of his head with a single blow from the specialist mountaineering ice axe -wielded from behind. Friends found him lying poleaxed in a park in a pool of blood -with the weapon still embedded in his skull. He died in hospital six hours later from a "massive and catastrophic" brain injury, Liverpool Crown Court was told. Pathologist Brian Rodgers said the blow caused "extensive disintegration" of the brain to a depth of seven centimetres. Damage to the area suggested the axe had been moved while still in Anthony's skull. Jurors were shown a DVD graphic detailing the angle at which the weapon struck. Prosecutor Neil Flewitt QC told them Anthony may already have been

  • In the Eye of the Storm: the Referees' Perspective
In the eye of the storm: the referees' perspective Howard Webb Who would want to swap places with referee Howard Webb in a potential Premier League title-decider between Manchester United and Chelsea? After the championship race was blown open amid a spate of officiating errors in games involving the title contenders, Webb faces an unenviable task at Old Trafford, with players, managers, fans and pundits ready to pounce on any perceived mistake. The last Premier League meeting between the two sides led to United manager Sir Alex Ferguson incurring a five-match touchline ban for his criticism of referee Martin Atkinson's performance in Chelsea's 2-1 victory. And Ferguson has already ramped up the pressure on Webb by claiming Chelsea benefited from "great decisions" in their 2-1 victory over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. So how do referees prepare for such monumental encounters? How do they keep their heads while all around them are losing theirs? And how do they deal with the inevitable criticism which follows? We asked former Premier League referees Alan Wiley, Jeff Winter and David Elleray, who took charge of many crunch matches during their long careers in the top flight, to provide a window on to the world of an official on the day of a big game, and assess the challenges facing Webb and his assistants on Sunday. PRE-MATCH PREPARATION Winter: "In the week before a game, referees would talk to each other. I would look at which ref did the reverse fixture earlier in the season and ask them: 'Were there any problems?' "A ref does have it in back of his mind how important the game is and he will, just like the teams, have a game plan.
