Seeding Controversy: Did Israel Invent the Cherry Tomato? Abstract This research brief explores the controversial history of the cherry tomato and analyzes its role in the construction of Israel's national identity. Since 2003, mentions of Israel having “invented” the cherry tomato have appeared in both Israeli and international media. However, such claims have sparked outrage on various blogs and websites, and questions have been raised about the veracity of Israel's claims—as well as about the true origin of the cherry tomato. I explore the history of the cherry tomato, tracing mentions of it from the Renaissance period to modern times. In addition, I clarify the assertions of Israeli scientists credited with the development of the cherry tomato—that their research transformed the cherry tomato into a commodity in the 1980s. Finally, I discuss the cherry tomato claim in light of the Israeli government's hasbara (Hebrew for “explanation”) efforts, which attempt to counter negative images of Israel in the international press. While much previous scholarship on food and nationalism has focused on the relationship between the cultivation, preparation, or consumption of a food and the construction of a national identity, the present work focuses on the relationship between the food's invention narrative and national identity.

Husband, age forty-five and the commander of Columbia. Commander Husband was a colonel in the United States air force. McCool, age forty-one and the pilot for the mission. He was a commander in the United States navy and a former test pilot. Commander McCool became an astronaut in 1996, and this was his first space flight. His home was Lubbock, Texas; Michael P. Anderson, age forty-three and the payload commander for Columbia. Lieutenant Colonel Anderson was an air force man who grew up as the son of an air force man. Selected as an astronaut in 1994, he had previously logged over two hundred eleven hours in space.

REVIEWED BY GILBERT ACHCAR Ilan Pappé is well known to the readers of this journal as a prolific author of Palestine studies and one of the Israeli intellectuals who engaged most radically in the deconstruction and refutation of the Zionist narrative on Palestine. This book is primarily an incursion, by Pappé, into Israel studies: it is a work not directly about Palestine, but rather about Israel. More precisely, it is about the battle over “the idea of Israel” (i.e., the representation of the Zionist state that prevails in Israel and the challenge Israeli intellectuals pose to that representation). In many ways, Pappé’s new book is a continuation and expansion of his autobiographic Out of the Frame: The Struggle for Academic Freedom in Israel (2010), in which he describes his personal trajectory. In his new book, he provides the wider picture: the historical, intellectual, and political context that led to the emergence, rise to fame, and dwindling of the group of New Historians and “post- Zionist” figures of the Israeli academic and cultural scenes, of which Pappé was and remains a prominent member. The Idea of Israel starts by setting the backdrop to this development. In a short first part, Pappé sketches the main contours of the academic and fictional representation of Israel that complemented official Zionist ideology during the state’s first decades. Gleichzei- tig legen wir im Deutsch-Israelischen Jahr der Wissenschaft und Technologie ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften. Denn sie tragen in besonderer Weise zur Reflexion über Vergangenes, Gegenwart und Zukunft bei und sie zeigen der Politik Optionen für zukünf- tiges Handeln auf. Wir wollen deshalb auch die Vernetzung des wissenschaftli- chen Nachwuchses fördern.
