The Development Innovations project is funded by USAID and implemented by DAI. This report presents a narrative of program highlights, administrative activities, and challenges faced during the current reporting period. START UP STATUS: Completed All key start-up milestones have been completed during this and the preceding quarters: Work Plan finalized and accepted; Project registration completed; Catalyst Fund Grants Manual completed and approved; Catalyst Grant Fund launched via RFA posting (abbreviated); MEP completed/approved; Move into project offices and Lab premises completed; Official Project Launch/Lab Opening, March 18, featuring a Tech Expo; Board of Advisors list for Lab and its business plan submitted to USAID Organizational meeting of Board of Advisors held. Technical Activities Events and Training: Development Innovations continued an intensive level of programming with 26 events during the quarter, encompassing a broad variety of subjects and attracting a large and diverse audience. Highlights of the event schedule during the quarter included: Global Leaders: “Digital Security: Threats and Realities”, April 29 Mobile Monday Phnom Penh launched, May 5 Education Technology Workshop for Teachers and Trainers, May 14 Mobile App Expo in conjunction with Transparency International’s Bribespot launch and live demo, May 29 Google Business Group Women in Cambodia, organizing event, May 31 “Trends in Information Security”, Workshop for CSOs, June 9 Google Developer Groups Phnom Penh: “Are You a Developer? Additionally, the project began a key series of trainings during the quarter: DEVELOPMENT INNOVATIONS PROJECT 8 “Information Security Training – Introduction Level” was presented two times during the quarter, June 23-24, and June 25-26, in collaboration with USAID’s ISC project. Additional trainings in the series will be offered during the next two quarters. Transparency International Youth and Civic Engagement Trainings, co- sponsored by Development Innovations, were completed during the quarter, having trained 401 youth (52% girls) in 10 provinces in the responsible use of social media for civic engagement 5D Lab: Having only opened in March 2014, the 5D Lab is at work building a community. Its Innovation Resource Center’s services have already attracted a large number of CSO interested in finding ICT solutions for their development work. IRC: Engagement letters signed by 11 of 32 groups consulting with the IRS: 27 CSOs, 3 TSPs, 2 Individuals.. Lab Membership: There were 213 lab members at 6/30/14. Lab events, equipment /software, an energetic, welcoming manager, and the space itself are attracting members and groups who use it as a place to create, as a space for meetings and work sessions, and a place to connect with others and to learn something new. The Lab hosted16 events with subjects as diverse as a WikiMeetup to write new articles about the World Cup, 3 orientation sessions for new members, and a Supernet brainstorming session on how a fiber optic network could be put to community and development use. DEVELOPMENT INNOVATIONS PROJECT 9 1.0 INTRODUCTION The rapid uptake of information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as mobile phones, the Internet, and social media offers expanded opportunities to accelerate development. ICTs have the potential to decrease cost, increase efficiency, and overcome geographic and societal limitations of accessing information and participation by Cambodians. The Development Innovations project will enable and grow a community of public and private sector actors that have the vision and capacity to realize the potential of technology to support Cambodia’s development goals. The environment in Cambodia is ripe for social innovation. A majority of Cambodian citizens can reliably access mobile
