Canada Lieder, totalitarianism, and the Bund deutscher Madel: girls' political coercion through song The Bund deutscher Madel (BdM), a Nazi youth organization for girls, was sponsored, organized, and promoted by AdolfHitler's National Socialist Party. The BdM instilled values and beliefs ofNational Socialism in German girls, and encouraged attitudes and behavior in them that harmonized with Party views on womanhood. Political indoctrination for girls often came through music -- especially song. Musical repertoire ofthe BdMstrongly interconnects with the organization's development, internaI structure and political philosophies. My thesis analyses the relations between music, the BdM, National Socialism, and gender. Historical perspectives are documented to clarify the function and intention of the BdM, including its politics and philosophy, its activities designed to foster 'natural' gender roles, and its emerging supremacy over other right-wing youth movements in Nazi Germany. My thesis then examines conceptions of 'natural' gender roles for girls and women in Nazi society and how these role expectations are covertly and overtly embedded in the official music book ofthe BdM, entitled Wir Madel singen! To illustrate this relationship between music, politics, and gender expectations, ten songs from Wir Madel singen! are analyzed in detai1. Lieder, totalitarianisme et le Bund deutscher Madel: la contrainte politique de filles par le chant Le Bunddeutscher Madel, une organization de jeunes filles nazis, a été parrainée, organisée et promue par le parti national-socialiste d'AdolfHitler. Le BdM inculquait les valeurs et les croyances du national-socialisme aux jeunes Allemandes et encouragait chez elles des attitudes et les comportments qui concordaient avec les perspectives du parti sur la femme. L'endoctrinement politique des filles passait souvent par la musique, et surtout le chant. Le repertoire musical du BdM était étroitment lié al'évolution, à la structure interne et à la philosophie politique de l'organisation. Ma thèse porte sur les rapports entre la musique, le BdM, le national-socialisme et les rôles des sexes. Des perspectives historiques sont présentées afin de cerner les functions et les objectifs du BdM, y compris ses caractéristiques politiques et philosophiques, ses activités visant à renforcer les rôles naturels des homes et des femmes, et sa suprématie par rapport aux autres mouvements de droite qui s'adressaient aux jeunes de l'Allemagne nazi. Ma thèse traite ensuite du rapport entre la conception nazie des rôles naturels des filles et des femmes dans la société et la façon dont cette conception était ancrée, ouvertement ou non, dans Wir Madel singent, livre de musique officiel du BdM. During this time, the Bund deutscher Madel sought to instill the values and beliefs of National Socialism in them, including strict instruction about the "essence" offemininity as being separate from masculinity. This dualist perspective became impressed upon girls in the Bunddeutscher Madel through gendered education and work. In both subtle and obvious ways, these guided experiences perpetuated attitudes and behavior in young German girls that harmonized with Party views on womanhood. A common path to political indoctrination for and about girls came through music -- in particular, through the medium ofsong. Musical repertoire ofthe Bunddeutscher Madel strongly interconnects with the organization's development, internaI structure and political philosophies. My thesis will begin with a sketch ofchanging politics and society in Germany at the turn ofthe twentieth century that gave rise to the Wandervogel movement. This early youth movement merits discussion for two reasons: their community values paralleled the Bund deutscher Madel in significant ways, and its folk music repertoire survived the movement itselfto both influence and become a part ofthe organizational identity ofthe Bund deutscher Madel. 1will also enumerate the 1920s predecessors ofthe Bund deutscher Madel that embraced the political right in the aftermath ofthe Versailles Treaty. The second part ofmy thesis will examine the emerging supremacy ofthe Bund deutscher Madel over other right-wing youth movements. Its development, consolidation, and organization will be detailed. Proclamations by Nazi leaders regarding gendered 2 notions ofwork, recreation, and education will frequently buttress my analysis ofthe Bund deutscher Madel, and later prove to be indispensable in understanding the group's choice ofmusical inventory. Last, but not least, the final sections ofmy thesis will present assertions by various Nazi music leaders about the values and importance ofmusic for indoctrinating girls in the Bund deutscher Madel. Their statements about music provide a pivotaI link between generalized Party proclamations about girls' roles in National Socialism, and Bund deutscher Madel song selections. Using the official Bund deutscher Madel songbook entitled WirMadel singent, 1will select ten examples to detail relations between text and music, taking into account analyses ofkeys, meters, melodic ranges, tempi and text settings.     Abstract Title of Document: AMERICAN BLACKNESS AND VERGANGENHEITSBEWÄLTIGUNG IN TWENTY- FIRST CENTURY GERMAN LITERATURE AND FILM Christina Wall, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Directed by: Professor Elke P. Frederiksen, Department of Germanic Studies This study represents a unique examination of the convergence of constructs of Blackness and racism in twenty-first century novels and films by white Germans and Austrians in order to demonstrate how these texts broaden discourses of Vergangenheitsbewältigung. The increased prominence of minority voices demanding recognition of their national identity within Nazi successor states has transformed white German perceptions of “Germanness” and of these nations’ relationships to their turbulent pasts. I analyze how authors and directors employ constructs of Blackness within fictional texts to interrogate the dynamics of historical and contemporary racisms. Acknowledging that discourses of ‘race’ are taboo, I analyze how authors and directors avoid this forbidden discourse by drawing comparisons between constructs of American Blackness and German and Austrian historical encounters with ‘race’. This study employs cultural studies’ understanding of ‘race’ and Blackness as constructs created across discourses. Following the example of Toni Morrison’s Playing in the Dark (1992), my textual analyses show how these constructs create a “playground for the imagination” in which authors confront modern German racism. My study begins with a brief history of German-African American encounters, emphasizing the role American Blackness played during pivotal moments of German national identity formation. The subsequent chapters are divided thematically, each one comprised of textual analyses that explore discourses integral to Vergangenheitsbewältigung. The third chapter examines articulations of violence and racism in two films, Oskar Roehler’s Lulu & Jimi (2008) and Michael Schorr’s Schultze gets the blues (2008), to explore possibilities of familial reconciliation despite historical guilt.

Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Konrad Jarausch Karen Auerbach Karen Hagemann © 2020 Madeline James ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Madeline James: Domesticating the German East: Nazi Propaganda And Women’s Roles in the “Germanization” of the Warthegau during World War II (Under the direction of Konrad Jarausch and Karen Auerbach) This thesis utilizes Nazi women’s propaganda to explore the relationship between Nazi gender and racial ideology, particularly in relation to the Nazi Germanization program in the Warthegau during World War II. At the heart of this study is an examination of a paradox inherent in Nazi gender ideology, which simultaneously limited and expanded “Aryan” German women’s roles in the greater German community. Far from being “returned to the home” by the Nazis in 1933, German women experienced an expanded sphere of influence both within and beyond the borders of the Reich due to their social and cultural roles as “mothers of the nation.” As “bearers of German culture,” German women came to occupy a significant role in Nazi plans to create a new “German homeland” in Eastern Europe. This female role of “domesticating” the East, opposite the perceived “male” tasks of occupation, expulsion, and resettlement, entailed cultivating and reinforcing Germanness in the Volksdeutsche (ethnic German) communities, molding them into “future masters of the German East.” This thesis therefore also examines the ways in which Reich German women utilized the notion of a distinctly female cultural sphere to stake a claim in the Germanizing mission.

I’ve watched films and read books on it for many years. Last summer my grandpa and I were watching a documentary on National Geography about The Hitler Youth. It was fascinating to me how millions of children could believe the ridiculous rhetoric the Nazis preached. I decided it would be a fascinating project and proceeded to rid of my research from my old topic I had thought of. To begin, I started with doing background research. I learned some interesting information about how the group was started and what kind of activities they took part in from The Holocaust Memorial Museum and books. After some time, I decided I should try to find books written by people who were actually in the Hitler Youth, and found quite a few. After that, I began researching how the Hitler Youth was able to thrive. By that time I had established that the barrier they broke through, which was their ignorance and prejudice, so I started researching how they were able to break through that barrier. Using this knowledge, I looked for textbooks the Nazis had used for the Hitler Youth to teach them, and I also looked at education standards at the time. I looked at letters and diaries written by the Hitler Youth at the time to understand how their feelings and perspectives, and how those thoughts progressed after the war.

    PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI I, 2017 KATARZYNA JEDYNAKIEWICZ-MRÓZ Łódź BETWEEN GRETCHEN AND VALKYRIE1 THE MODEL OF WOMANHOOD IN THE CONCEPTS AND PRACTICE OF THE LEAGUE OF GERMAN GIRLS (1933–1945) The history of the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädel, BDM) has long remained a marginal topic in research concerning the history of the Third Reich. The organisation has been presented either as an element of the history of the Hit- lerjugend2 or in the context of analyses of the position of women in the structure of the Nazi state.3 It was only in 1983 that a monograph was published by Martin Klaus devoted in its entirety to the BDM, being a development of that author’s doc- toral thesis.4 Further academic studies concerning the League would not appear for almost another two decades. In 2000 a book by Sabine Herring and Kurt Schilde was published about the Glaube und Schönheit (“Faith and Beauty”) organisation, a structure set up in 1938 within the BDM.5 Deeper knowledge about the League itself was also supplied by a work by Gisela Miller-Kipp6 and a collection of texts edited by Dagmar Reese.7 The first Polish article about the history of the structure 1 The terms “Gretchen” and “Valkyrie” come from a 1937 article in the magazine Das Deutsche Mädel.
