The estate then descended in direct male line until John Carne died without male issue, the estate passing to his brother, William Carne. William's son and heir was Sir Edward Carne. The estate then descended in the male line until the death in 1798 of the Rev. John Carne (d. 1798), rector of Plumtree, Nottinghamshire, and prebendary of Llandaff, whose only daughter, Eleanor died without issue in 1842. The estate then devolved under entail upon Eleanor Carne, daughter of Captain Charles Loder Carne who married secondly the Rev. Robert Nicholl of Dimlands, (1763-1849), 6th son of Whitlock Nicholl (1720-1788) of The Ham, Glamorgan, and brother of the Rev. Iltyd Nicholl (1743-1787), rector of Treddington, Worcestershire. The Rev. Robert Nicholl inherited the Nash estate in right of his wife and assumed the surname Carne. He was succeeded by Robert Charles Nicholl-Carne who died in 1869. The Nicholl family have been seated at The Ham, Glamorgan, for nearly 300 years, and before that were found at Llantwit Major. Iltyd Nicholl of Llantwit Major acquired The Ham in Glamorgan, following his marriage to Cecil, daughter and heiress of Edmond Turberville of The Ham.

Robert Nicholl (1763-1849), of the Ham, Llantwit Major, ordained in 1787, curate of Chevenage, Gloucestershire, 1788-1789, and later rector of Port Eynon, Glamorgan, (1795) and Llanmaes, Glamorgan (1824). Robert received bequests in 1783 and 1786, and an annuity of £105 under the will of his father, Whitlock (d 1788). This enabled him to purchase, in 1791, the estate of the late Thomas Lewis in Llanblethian, Glamorgan, but he remained heavily dependent on donations from relatives until his marriage to Mary Woodward, of Chevenage. In 1795, they moved to Llanmaes House, and he paid more attention to the estate in Llantwit Major. From his father, he had inherited 99 acres, mostly near Dimlands and Frampton, but set about concentrating his estate around Dimlands, and began construction of a mansion there in 1799; up to his death in 1849, he continued to acquire property in the nearby parishes of Llanblethian and Llanmaes and further afield: he acquired land at Brynsach, 1817, by exchange, Westfield, by purchase, and Sheeplays farm, 1835, at an auction of Bute property.

  • Project Newsletter Constitute Volume 1
    EDITORIAL In this issue, as well as continuing with the 'A to Z' of place-names (we have reached letter 'C'), we are re-printing by kind permission of Mr J.M.Cleary of Acton, Wrexham, an excellent short article which he wrote for 'The Illtydian'(XXII.3.1950), the magazine of St Illtyd’s School, which was of course in Splott before it was moved to its present location in Llanrumney. It is fascinating to learn that Mr Cleary was born in what is now The Great Eastern Hotel in Metal Street, the former 16th century house of Thomas Bawdripp which became the homestead of the Upper Splott Farm. The name Bawdripp constantly crops up in our Roath records. We hold copies of the P.C.C. will of 1628 of William and the Llandaff diocesan will of Catherine (29.8.1662) and these will no doubt be referred to in later issues. Another forthcoming attraction is a second article by Mr J.M.Cleary, originally published in 'The Illtydian’ Summer 1964 entitled ‘Forty Years in Splott’. We also intend to publish the Surveys of the Manor of Roath Keynsham for 1650 and 1702. The first 10 numbers of the Project Newsletter constitute Volume 1. The burden of producing issues at monthly intervals is proving rather too heavy and thought will have to be given at the forthcoming A.G.M. to changing to a quarterly issue without reducing the quality or quantity of the annual output of material. FIELD VISITS The numbers attending some of our recent meetings have been disappointingly low, due no doubt to the holiday season being with us.
