Clagon, Rider A total of four Edinboro wrestlers came away with championships in the Clarion Open. The most surpris‐ ing was Mitchell Port, who was the obvious favorite but was expected to wrestle the night before in the NWCA All‐Star Classic. When his bout was cancelled he made the drive from Philadelphia to Clarion and then won all five of his matches to take home first place at 149 lbs. Port claimed a 9‐6 decision over Clar‐ ion’s Brock Zacherl in the final. In addition, Dave Habat was the winner at 149, Austin Matthews took first at 157 lbs., and Vic Avery was the champion at 184 lbs. Habat went 5‐0 on the day, defeating Lehigh’s Laike Gardner in the finals. Matthews had an impressive debut as a Fighting Scot, going 5‐0 with two falls and two major decisions at 157 lbs. He won a 9‐0 major decision over Colt Shorts of Cal Poly in the cham‐ pionship match. Avery defeated Thomas Sleigh 10‐4 in the 184 lb. finals to cap a 4‐0 day. All told, 12 Fight‐ ing Scots placed, including freshman heavyweight Billy Miller, who was wrestling unattached. Miller came in second, suffering a 3‐2 loss to former national qualifier Riley Shaw of Cleveland State in the finals. Two Fighting Scots placed at 174 and 165 lbs. Nick Mitchell was second and Patrick Jennings third at 174 lbs., while Casey Fuller was third and Kasey Burnett‐Davis fourth at 165 lbs. Fuller defeated Burnett‐Davis 10‐5 in the consolation finals.
