Gaertner) Wood Kamile TIRAK HIZAL1*, Nurgün ERDİN2 Abstract Due to the increasing demand and consumption of structural wood and the continuous development of forest industries, plantations of fast-growing trees became important for sustainability of industrial wood raw material. Black alder tree (Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertner) is naturally fast grown tree in North of Turkey. The aim of this research was to determine radial variation of annual ring width and fiber diamensions in planted and natural stands of black alder. The observations were made in young (28 years of age) and in mature trees (38-88 years of age). Three of planted trees were cut from Meryemana-Yeniköy, three of natural alder trees were cut from Maçka-Yüzüncüyıl in Trabzon. From the breast height a disc was taken and determined the South and North side of them. For fiber dimensions wood blocks were taken along the radial direction at three positions (near the pith, middle and periphery). The statistical analyses on the mean differences of the measured variables performed by ANOVA (analysis of variance) at %5 probability. The mean annual ring width was 4.08 mm for planted alder, 1.86 mm for nature alder. There was a significant difference between planted and mature alder wood annual ring width. The mean values of fiber length were 1115.1 and 1119.43 µm; fiber diameter were 27.27 and 26.46 µm; fiber lumen width were 18.68 and 17.32 µm while the mean values for fiber double cell wall thickness were 8.59 and 9.14 µm for natural and planted black alder wood respectively. There was significant difference between section of disc (inner, middle, outer) for fiber dimensions. Fiber length, fiber diameter and double cell wall thickness of fiber increased with age for natural and planted black alder wood; however fiber lumen diameter decreased with age for natural trees. The results of this study provide for understanding the differences between planted and natural tree annual ring and fiber properties and encourage to determine the other wood properties. Key Words: Natural grown black alder, Planted black alder wood, Fiber, Radial variation. 1Düzce University, Forestry Faculty, Vocational School of Forestry [email protected] 2İstanbul University, Forestry Faculty, Forest Industrial Engineering Department (retired) *This study was prepared from a part of doctorate thesis in Istanbul Universiy, Institution of Science, Forest Industrial Engineering Department. 1 Introduction Wood is one of the most important raw material used by man. (Fabaceae), which belongs to subfamily Papilionoideae and is endemic to northwestern Turkey. The ovary is monocarpellate and the mature ovule is anatropous, bitegmic and crassinucellate. Differentiation of the outer integument determines a Y- shaped micropyle aperture. The nucellar epidermis is poorly developed. The inner parietal layers of the integument differentiate into a thin layer of endothelium. The hypodermally oriented archesporium is distinguished as one cell. Archesporium produces a parietal cell and a primary sporogenous cell. The primary sporogenous cell enlarges to form megasporocyte. After meiotic division, megaspores organize in an isobilateral manner of tetrad. Only one megaspore functions and it is one of the chalazal members of the tetrad. The functional megaspore develops into an embryo sac, which gives rise to a Polygonum type. The synergids lying above the egg cell are typical in structure. The antipodals are ephemeral and degenerate earlier without leaving any remnants. Embryo development is of Onagrad type. Suspensor degenerates at the globular embryo stage. The primary endosperm nucleus divides mitotically in a free nuclear manner and it is rich for insoluble polysaccharides and protein. © 2013 Friends Science Publishers Keywords: Lathyrus undulatus; Megasporogenesis; Megagametogenesis; Embryo; Endosperma Introduction studies were reported on the anthers of Lathyrus undulatus in detail (Vardar and Ünal, 2011a; 2011b; 2011c; 2012).

  • A HISTORY of the PELASGIAN THEORY. FEW Peoples Of
A HISTORY OF THE PELASGIAN THEORY. FEW peoples of the ancient world have given rise to so much controversy as the Pelasgians; and of few, after some centuries of discussion, is so little clearly established. Like the Phoenicians, the Celts, and of recent years the Teutons, they have been a peg upon which to hang all sorts of speculation ; and whenever an inconvenient circumstance has deranged the symmetry of a theory, it has been safe to ' call it Pelasgian and pass on.' One main reason for this ill-repute, into which the Pelasgian name has fallen, has been the very uncritical fashion in which the ancient statements about the Pelasgians have commonly been mishandled. It has been the custom to treat passages from Homer, from Herodotus, from Ephorus, and from Pausanias, as if they were so many interchangeable bricks to build up the speculative edifice; as if it needed no proof that genealogies found sum- marized in Pausanias or Apollodorus ' were taken by them from poems of the same class with the Theogony, or from ancient treatises, or from prevalent opinions ;' as if, further, ' if we find them mentioning the Pelasgian nation, they do at all events belong to an age when that name and people had nothing of the mystery which they bore to the eyes of the later Greeks, for instance of Strabo;' and as though (in the same passage) a statement of Stephanus of Byzantium about Pelasgians in Italy ' were evidence to the same effect, perfectly unexceptionable and as strictly historical as the case will admit of 1 No one doubts, of course, either that popular tradition may transmit, or that late writers may transcribe, statements which come from very early, and even from contemporary sources.

  • Alexander's Lysimacheia: Anna Comnena 15.7.8 Abstract
[Historia 64 (2015) 301-305; preliminary version] ALEXANDER’S LYSIMACHEIA: ANNA COMNENA 15.7.8 ABSTRACT: Anna says that Alexander founded “Lysimacheia in Ethiopia.” Aithiopia should be emended to Aetolia; Lysimacheia in Aetolia was founded in the 280s under the auspices of Lysimachus. Anna’s statement about Alexander, though mistaken, can nevertheless suggest that Lysimachus’ agent in the foundation may have been his son Alexander, whom Anna or her source confused with Alexander the Great. Praising her father as founder of numerous cities, Anna compares, a bit dismissively, the city foundations of Alexander the Great (Alexiad 15.7.8): ὁ μὲν οὖν Ἀλέξανδρος ἐκεῖνος ὁ Μακεδὼν αὐχείτω μὲν ἐπὶ τῇ κατ’ Αἴγυπτον Ἀλεξανδρείᾳ, ἐπὶ τῇ κατὰ Μήδους Βουκεφάλῃ, ἐπὶ τῇ κατ’ Αἰθιοπίαν Λυσιμαχίᾳ. Well then, let that Alexander of Macedon exult in Alexandria in Egypt, in Bucephala among the Medes, in Lysimacheia in Ethiopia. At this last city, a reader surely must pause and ask directions.1 The valuable index prepared by F. Kolovou and D. R. Reinsch hints at an explanation: “urbs de Lysimacho Alexandri Magni comite nominata,” and of 15.7.8 “re vera ad Hellespontum.”2 This might suggest that being Alexander’s companion was enough of a connection to attribute the foundation of Lysimacheia to Alexander. But Lysimachus’ capital on the Thracian Chersonese was founded in 309 B.C., long after Alexander’s death; no connection of Alexander with that city is possible. Nor was Ethiopia ever visited by either Alexander3 or Lysimachus. Anna may have | [302] known the

FÝLÝZ VARDAR*, MERAL ÜNAL Marmara University, Science and Art Faculty, Department of Biology, Göztepe, 34722, Ýstanbul, Turkey. In Lathyrus undulatus Boiss. (Fabaceae), the young microspore stage of anther develop- ment was characterized by the enlarged secretory tapetal cells, which presented an intense reaction with regard to protein, insoluble polysaccharides and lipids. At bicellular pollen stage, the middle layer and the tapetum degenerated. After degradation of the tapetum, epidermis and single row U-shaped endothecium existed in the mature anther wall, and pollen grains remained in the locus. Young microspores had a spherical and centrally lo- cated nucleus with one or two nucleoli, many spherical lipid bodies and starchy plastids. A mature pollen grain contains insoluble polysaccharides, proteins, lipids and calcium. The mature pollen had the following morphological characteristics: 3-zonocolporate, prolate, tectate (imperforate) type of exine and perforate type of structure. The intine formed an important constituent portion of the wall, and consisted two sublayers: an outer intine (exintine) and an inner intine (endintine).
