Solitary Sandpipers Breeding in Montana Progress Report for the 2020 Field Season and Summary of Past Work Montana Bird Advocacy, Missoula, Montana 2 March 2021 Most Solitary Sandpipers (Tringa solitaria) breed in Alaska and Canada near wetlands surrounded by boreal forest habitat. They were first confirmed breeding in the contiguous United States in northern Minnesota in 1973 (Savoloja 1973). Additional nesting attempts (dependent young, not nests with eggs) were documented annually in Minnesota from 1982–1984 and in 1987, 2012, and 2013 (Hoffman and Hoffman 1982, Pfannmuller et al. 2017). Solitary Sandpipers were strongly suspected to have nested in Oregon several times between 1981 and 1995 (Sawyer 1981, Lundsten 1996), but no nest or dependent young were observed. The species had never been documented nesting in Montana prior to our work in 2018 (Marks et al. 2016). Recent observations from Glacier National Park (GNP) suggested that they bred in the state. Single adults were observed at two wetlands during the summer of 2007 and at a third location in 2010, 2011, and 2016 (see Tables 1 & 2) as they vocalized and perched in trees, which are typical behaviors of breeding birds but not of migrants (Paulson 1993). These three sites were on the west side of the park. Also, birds that may have been territorial were seen at two unnamed lakes near the eastern boundary of the park in June and July of 2013 (Steve Gniadek, pers. comm.). Habitat at these sites is similar to that at breeding sites in Canada. We documented the first nesting attempt known for Solitary Sandpipers in Montana in 2018 at Sondreson Meadow just outside the boundary of GNP (Fig. -

NOTES Gannets robbing gulls.—On 5th August 1957, I spent the day at sea in Dingle Bay, Co. Kerry, in the trawler "Ros Brin". As soon as trawling operations began, we were accompanied by a few Storm Petrels (Hydrobates pelagicus), Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis), Great Black-backed Gulls (Larus marinus), Lesser Black-backed Gulls (L. fuscus), and large numbers of Herring Gulls (L. argentatus). During the gutting periods, and especially when any small waste fish were thrown over-board, six to eight Gannets (Sula bassana), would join in the feast. Any fish that sank too deep for the gulls were immediately taken by the Gannets by the normal manner of diving, but on numerous occasions when a gull sitting on the surface had a fish it could not swallow quickly—i.e. small plaice, dabs and other flat fish—one or other of the Gannets would plunge in a shallow-angled frontal dive at the gull, entering the water about two yards away and snatching the fish from the gull's bill on breaking the surface. The fish was swallowed on the surface. This was repeated many times, and the Gannets also frequently fluttered along the water and snatched fish from the bills of other gulls which they passed. On several occasions, too, a Gannet was seen to lunge into the air after a retreating gull that was attempting to rise from the water with a fish; the Gannet "treading water" with wings half-open and neck fully extended upwards in its endeavour to snap the fish from the slowly rising and heavily gorged' gull. -

Green Sandpiper
Green Sandpiper The Green Sandpiper (Tringa ochropus) is a small wader of the Old World. The genus name Tringa is the New Latin name given to the Green Sandpiper by Aldrovandus in 1599 based on Ancient Greek trungas, a thrush-sized, white- rumped, tail-bobbing wading bird mentioned by Aristotle. The specific ochropus is from Ancient Greek okhros, "ochre", and pous, "foot". The Green Sandpiper represents an ancient lineage of the genus Tringa and its only close living relative is the Solitary Sandpiper (T. solitaria). They both have brown wings with little light dots and a delicate but contrasting neck and chest pattern. In addition, both species nest in trees, unlike most other scolopacids. Given its basal position in Tringa, it is fairly unsurprising that suspected cases of hybridisation between this species and the Common Sandpiper (A. hypoleucos) of the sister genus Actitis have been reported. This species is a somewhat plump wader with a dark greenish-brown back and wings, greyish head and breast and otherwise white underparts. The back is spotted white to varying extents, being maximal in the breeding adult, and less in winter and young birds. The legs and short bill are both dark green. It is conspicuous and characteristically patterned in flight, with the wings dark above and below and a brilliant white rump. The latter feature reliably distinguishes it from the slightly smaller but otherwise very similar Solitary Sandpiper (T. solitaria) of North America. It breeds across subarctic Europe and Asia and is a migratory bird, wintering in southern Europe, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and tropical Africa. -

We flew from Delhi to Guwahati, located in the far northeast of India. A long drive later through the hectic traffic of this enjoyable country, we arrived at our lodge in the evening. (Photo by tour participant Robert Warren) We enjoyed three full days of the wildlife and avifauna spectacles of the famous Kaziranga National Park. This park is one of the last easily accessible places to find the endangered Indian One-horned Rhinoceros together with a healthy population of Asian Elephant and Asiatic Wild Buffalo. We saw plenty individuals of all species; the rhino especially made an impression on all of us. It is such an impressive piece of evolution, a serious armored “tank”! On two mornings we loved the elephant rides provided by the park; on the back of these attractive animals we came very close to the rhinos. The fertile flood plains of the park consist of alluvial silts, exposed sandbars, and riverine flood-formed lakes called Beels. This open habitat is not only good for mammals but definitely a true gem for some great birds. Interesting but common birds included Bar-headed Goose, Red Junglefowl, Woolly-necked Stork, and Lesser Adjutant, while the endangered Greater Adjutant and Black-necked Stork were good hits in the stork section. -

We documented the highest vertebrate scavenger diversity of any study to date (39 birds and mammals). Scavengers represented 10.9% of local birds and 28.3% of local mammals, emphasizing the diversity of food-web vectors supported by pumas, and the positive contributions of pumas and potentially other subordinate, apex felids to ecological stability. Scavenger diversity at carcasses was most influenced by the length of time the carcass was sampled, and the biological variables, temperature and prey weight. Nevertheless, diversity was relatively consistent across carcasses. We also identified six additional stalk- and-ambush carnivores weighing > 20 kg, that feed on prey larger than themselves, and are subordinate to other predators. Together with pumas, these seven felids may provide distinctive ecological functions through their disproportionate production of carrion and subsequent contributions to biodiversity. -

NISBET IT IS NOW generally accepted that the American waders which occur each autumn in western Europe have crossed the Atlantic unaided, in many (if not most) cases without stopping on the way. Yet we are far from being able to answer all the questions which are posed by these remarkable long-distance flights. Why, for example, do some species cross the Atlantic much more frequently than others? Why are a few birds recorded each year, and not many more, or many less? What factors determine the dates on which they cross? Why are most of the occurrences in the autumn? Why, despite the great advantage given to them by the prevail ing winds, are American waders only a little more numerous in Europe than European waders in North America? To dismiss the birds as "accidental vagrants", or to relate their occurrence to weather patterns, as have been attempted in the past, may answer some of these questions, but render the others still more acute. One fruitful approach to these problems is to compare the frequency of the various species in Europe with their abundance, migratory behaviour and ecology in North America. If the likelihood of occurrence in Europe should prove to be correlated with some particular type of migration pattern in North America this would offer an important clue as to the causes of trans atlantic vagrancy. In this paper some aspects of wader migration in North America will be discussed from this viewpoint. -
