NATIONALN A T I O N A L FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN POLICY NFAP POLICY BRIEF » J U N E 2 0 1 4 IMMIGRANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE NBA AND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2014 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs are an example of how successful American enterprises today combine native-born and foreign-born talent to compete at the highest level. With 7 foreign-born players, the Spurs led the NBA with the most foreign-born players on their roster. Tony Parker (France), Boris Diaw (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina) played alongside Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kawhi Leonard (U.S.) to bring the team its 5th NBA championship since 1999. The San Antonio Spurs are part of a larger trend of globalization in the NBA. In the 2013-14 season, the National Basketball Association (NBA) set a record with 90 international players, representing 20 percent of the players on the opening-night NBA rosters, compared to 21 international players (and 5 percent of rosters) in 1992. Professional baseball started blending foreign-born players with native-born talent earlier than the NBA. On the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) opening-day roster there were 213 foreign-born players, representing 25 percent of the total, an increase of 2 percentage points from an NFAP analysis of MLB rosters performed in 2006. Leading foreign-born baseball players include 2013 American League MVP Miguel Cabrera, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz and Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish. JUNE 2018 COACHING NOTEBOOK – PICKANDPOP.NET The art of the cut (The Athletic) -When the Sixers call Point, B-Deny or another play that involves Redick running off a screen, he doesn’t view it as his turn to shoot. Instead, he phrases it as “a time to move bodies and potentially move the ball.” From there, it’s up to the Sixers to figure out what the defense is giving them. Brad Stevens and the Celtics have a special brand of toughness (ESPN.com) -Brett Brown, the Philadelphia 76ers head coach, is fond of saying, "The pass is king." As the Boston Celtics extended to a 3-0 lead against Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference semifinals, making seemingly every big play, some Celtics staffers began whispering their own version: "Toughness is king." The last slide of the film edit that Brad Stevens, Boston's coach, showed his team before Game 3 in Philadelphia contained a definition of toughness Stevens found recently in a book (he can't recall which one; he reads a lot): "Toughness is being able to physically and emotionally perform your task through any condition." -"If things are going really well in a home game, do you get caught up in that, or do you keep playing the right way?" Stevens asked in a chat with ESPN.com the day after Boston's Game 3 win in Philadelphia. "If things are going like they were in the second quarter last night [when the Sixers went on a run], do you say, 'I have a job to do and I'm going to do it, and I don't care that everyone is going nuts over this [Joel] Embiid dunk?' That is toughness.

Williams did it again Tuesday night, scoring 33 to send the Clippers to their fourth consecutive win, 113-105 over the Memphis Grizzlies. The standout reserve shot 8 of 15 from the fi eld. Continu- ally driving to the basket, he hit all 15 of his free throws. “He’s obviously a great scorer, but when you draw that many fouls and get to the free throw line that many times, you’re almost impossible to C M guard,” Memphis interim coach Y K J.B. Bickerstaff said. Williams leads NBA reserves in scoring at 21.6 points per game. He scored 40 off the bench in his last game against Charlotte. He has scored at least 30 off the bench eight times this season, tied for the second-most in NBA his- tory.

  • Raw Deal by Reg P. Wydeven February 6, 2013
Raw Deal By Reg P. Wydeven February 6, 2013 In the fall of 1998, some buddies and I attended the World Wrestling Federation’s ‘Raw is War’ event at Milwaukee’s Bradley Center. The event took place the day after the ‘Judgment Day’ pay-per-view event where chairman Vince McMahon fired the WWF’s biggest star, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. To celebrate, every single wrestler currently under contract with the WWF and several retired stars made their way to the ring as balloons and confetti fell. McMahon gave a speech and toasted the firing of Austin. After the party, we got to see wrestling legends the Road Warriors and my favorite grappler, Mankind, in action. Superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wrestled, followed by the brothers Kane and the Undertaker in a ‘casket match.’ The night ended with recently ousted Steve Austin showing up to kidnap Vince McMahon, causing the chairman to wet his pants. My buddies and I just kept looking at one another in shock, for we couldn’t believe that we got to see literally every wrestler in the WWF, along with some incredible matches between huge stars. The show we saw was worth ten times what we paid for the tickets. But not every spectator is as lucky as we were. Last fall, the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs had a brutal six-game road trip. To rest his aging veterans, coach Gregg Popovich sent star players Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Danny Green home early, so they missed the trip’s finale against the Miami Heat.

  • 23 Qualities of a Great Teammate
23 Qualities of a Great Teammate Being a great teammate is far more important than being a great player. Let’s face it… Chances are that you will never coach a player who goes on to play professional basketball at a high level (the chances are slim). And if you do, the number will pale in comparison to the number of players you coach who will never play any basketball professionally. But every single one of the players you’re coaching are going to grow up, get a job, and will be expected to be a contributing member of their community. So how can we best prepare our players for the rest of their lives? By teaching them how to be great teammates. Many of the qualities that players develop on their journey to being a great teammate will help their future out tremendously. In fact, every one of the 23 qualities of a great teammate listed below are the exact qualities that make someone a great co-worker. Your players might not recognize the importance now, but they will one day. And they will thank you. Here are 23 qualities all great teammates possess… www.basketballforcoaches.com By Coach Mac 1. A great teammate develops real relationships with their teammates Great relationships between teammates is an important foundation for the success of any team. Success does not necessarily mean winning (although it includes it), but rather the enjoyment had by those involved on the team throughout the season and looking back on it. To develop deep and real relationships between teammates, players must get to know their teammates as more than people they throw around a basketball with on the court a few times a week.

  • Racial Double Standards? the Case of Expected Performance and Dismissals of Head Coaches In
Racial double standards? The case of expected performance and dismissals of head coaches in NBA Carlos Gomez-Gonzalez, Julio del Corral, Andrés Maroto ABSTRACT Professional basketball in the US provides an opportunity to test racial differences in the labor market. In contrast to other professional sports, such as baseball or American football, and, more deeply, to other economic sectors, black Americans are represented in influencing positions as head coaches in this competitive setting. The paper investigates the influence of the race of the coach and performance (winning ratio and an efficiency index relative to expectations) on dismissal decisions. The data includes coach- team information over a 20-year period of time in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the analysis uses several probit models. The results show that black head coaches are more likely to be fired and less prone to quit than white head coaches, ceteris paribus. Both measures of performance (efficiency and victories) also play a significant role in dismissals. Keywords: Basketball, Coaches, Dismissal, Efficiency, Race, Performance, NBA 1 1. Introduction In the words of Samuel Johnson, racial discrimination was a fact "too evident for detection and too gross for aggravation" in the American society of the first part of the 20th century (Arrow, 1998, p. 92). African Americans had a strictly limited access to certain jobs, which prevented them from creating a social network and reaching top positions (Ibarra, 1995). In recent years, although African Americans still face barriers to access leadership jobs in certain sectors, they have successfully scale top positions in professional sports, particularly in basketball.
