NATIONALN A T I O N A L FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN POLICY NFAP POLICY BRIEF » J U N E 2 0 1 4 IMMIGRANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE NBA AND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2014 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs are an example of how successful American enterprises today combine native-born and foreign-born talent to compete at the highest level. With 7 foreign-born players, the Spurs led the NBA with the most foreign-born players on their roster. Tony Parker (France), Boris Diaw (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina) played alongside Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kawhi Leonard (U.S.) to bring the team its 5th NBA championship since 1999. The San Antonio Spurs are part of a larger trend of globalization in the NBA. In the 2013-14 season, the National Basketball Association (NBA) set a record with 90 international players, representing 20 percent of the players on the opening-night NBA rosters, compared to 21 international players (and 5 percent of rosters) in 1992. Professional baseball started blending foreign-born players with native-born talent earlier than the NBA. On the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) opening-day roster there were 213 foreign-born players, representing 25 percent of the total, an increase of 2 percentage points from an NFAP analysis of MLB rosters performed in 2006. Leading foreign-born baseball players include 2013 American League MVP Miguel Cabrera, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz and Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish. Humphreys∗ Candon Johnsony West Virginia University West Virginia University July 31, 2017 Abstract Economic models predict that \superstar" players generate externalities that increase at- tendance and other revenue sources beyond their individual contributions to team success. We investigate the effect of superstar players on individual game attendance at National Basketball Association games from 1981/82 through 2013/14. Regression models control for censoring due to sellouts, quality of teams, unobservable team/season heterogeneity, and expected game out- comes. The results show higher home and away attendance associated with superstar players. Michael Jordan generated the largest superstar attendance externality, generating an additional 5,021/5,631 fans at home/away games. Keywords: superstar effect, attendance demand, censored normal estimator JEL Codes: Z2,L83 Introduction A substantial literature in economics examines the presence of superstar effects in specific markets. Superstar effects refer to the presence of specific individuals or organizations earning far more than others and dominating activities. Superstar effects can exist in a number of settings, including corporate CEOs, graduate schools, researchers, classical and popular music performers, movie stars, textbook markets, and sports. The presence of superstar effects can explain observed differences in the distribution of earnings across individuals. -

March Coaching Notebook 2018
JUNE 2018 COACHING NOTEBOOK – PICKANDPOP.NET The art of the cut (The Athletic) -When the Sixers call Point, B-Deny or another play that involves Redick running off a screen, he doesn’t view it as his turn to shoot. Instead, he phrases it as “a time to move bodies and potentially move the ball.” From there, it’s up to the Sixers to figure out what the defense is giving them. Brad Stevens and the Celtics have a special brand of toughness (ESPN.com) -Brett Brown, the Philadelphia 76ers head coach, is fond of saying, "The pass is king." As the Boston Celtics extended to a 3-0 lead against Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference semifinals, making seemingly every big play, some Celtics staffers began whispering their own version: "Toughness is king." The last slide of the film edit that Brad Stevens, Boston's coach, showed his team before Game 3 in Philadelphia contained a definition of toughness Stevens found recently in a book (he can't recall which one; he reads a lot): "Toughness is being able to physically and emotionally perform your task through any condition." -"If things are going really well in a home game, do you get caught up in that, or do you keep playing the right way?" Stevens asked in a chat with ESPN.com the day after Boston's Game 3 win in Philadelphia. "If things are going like they were in the second quarter last night [when the Sixers went on a run], do you say, 'I have a job to do and I'm going to do it, and I don't care that everyone is going nuts over this [Joel] Embiid dunk?' That is toughness.
