NATIONALN A T I O N A L FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN POLICY NFAP POLICY BRIEF » J U N E 2 0 1 4 IMMIGRANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE NBA AND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2014 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs are an example of how successful American enterprises today combine native-born and foreign-born talent to compete at the highest level. With 7 foreign-born players, the Spurs led the NBA with the most foreign-born players on their roster. Tony Parker (France), Boris Diaw (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina) played alongside Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kawhi Leonard (U.S.) to bring the team its 5th NBA championship since 1999. The San Antonio Spurs are part of a larger trend of globalization in the NBA. In the 2013-14 season, the National Basketball Association (NBA) set a record with 90 international players, representing 20 percent of the players on the opening-night NBA rosters, compared to 21 international players (and 5 percent of rosters) in 1992. Professional baseball started blending foreign-born players with native-born talent earlier than the NBA. On the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) opening-day roster there were 213 foreign-born players, representing 25 percent of the total, an increase of 2 percentage points from an NFAP analysis of MLB rosters performed in 2006. Leading foreign-born baseball players include 2013 American League MVP Miguel Cabrera, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz and Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish. PUBLICATION: ESPN.Com DATE: 1/20/15
PUBLICATION: ESPN.com DATE: 1/20/15 Best of 2014-15 season's first half By: ESPN.com We're halfway home in 2014-15. Who's been tearing it up thus far? Our esteemed panelists make their picks for the best of the NBA season's first half. 1. Which is the best team of the season's first half? J.A. Adande: Golden State Warriors . It's rare we can slap the label of "best" alongside "most entertaining," but the Warriors consistently play fun games -- and consistently win them. When Andrew Bogut joins Stephen Curry , Klay Thompson , Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes in the starting lineup, the Warriors are 22-1. Bogut brings the interior defense to go with the Warriors' stellar backcourt. Bring back the "We Believe" -- only this time it's time to believe the Warriors can win it all, not just a series. Kevin Arnovitz: Golden State Warriors. Versatility is golden. When you have four or five guys on the floor for 48 minutes who can move the ball, shoot from distance, defend multiple positions and make sound decisions, it's difficult to lose. That's increasingly true with or without a healthy Andrew Bogut, although they're a better team when he's on the floor. Tom Haberstroh: Golden State Warriors, with the NBA's nastiest defense by a mile and an offense that's even scarier as of late. They're 22-1 with Andrew Bogut and Klay Thompson in the starting lineup, and they're averaging 118.6 points over their past 10 games. -

Jason Kidd's path from future Hall of Fame point guard to unproven coach of the Brooklyn Nets didn't begin with his 10 All-Star appearances or his 2011 title with the Mavericks. It started with a notebook. "It was something I started during my second time in Dallas," said Kidd, who played for the Mavericks from 1994-96 and 2008-12. "After a game, I would write about different situations and how different coaches handled things. Our coach at the time was Rick Carlisle, and the notebook [which later morphed into a smart phone] was about what kinds of things he did that I agreed with, disagreed with, and what worked for him and what didn't. It also detailed what our opponent's coach might be doing. So I took notes with the idea of, If I was ever in that situation how would I handle it? What would I do? "There was one game at Golden State where we were on a 20-0 run and they took a timeout. They come out and go on a 4-0 run, and our coach calls a timeout. You could feel the air come out of us; you could feel the momentum swinging toward them because of the timeout. -

March Coaching Notebook 2018
JUNE 2018 COACHING NOTEBOOK – PICKANDPOP.NET The art of the cut (The Athletic) -When the Sixers call Point, B-Deny or another play that involves Redick running off a screen, he doesn’t view it as his turn to shoot. Instead, he phrases it as “a time to move bodies and potentially move the ball.” From there, it’s up to the Sixers to figure out what the defense is giving them. Brad Stevens and the Celtics have a special brand of toughness (ESPN.com) -Brett Brown, the Philadelphia 76ers head coach, is fond of saying, "The pass is king." As the Boston Celtics extended to a 3-0 lead against Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference semifinals, making seemingly every big play, some Celtics staffers began whispering their own version: "Toughness is king." The last slide of the film edit that Brad Stevens, Boston's coach, showed his team before Game 3 in Philadelphia contained a definition of toughness Stevens found recently in a book (he can't recall which one; he reads a lot): "Toughness is being able to physically and emotionally perform your task through any condition." -"If things are going really well in a home game, do you get caught up in that, or do you keep playing the right way?" Stevens asked in a chat with ESPN.com the day after Boston's Game 3 win in Philadelphia. "If things are going like they were in the second quarter last night [when the Sixers went on a run], do you say, 'I have a job to do and I'm going to do it, and I don't care that everyone is going nuts over this [Joel] Embiid dunk?' That is toughness. -

PUBLICATION: AJC DATE: 1/23/16 Budenholzer says Blatt deserves another opportunity By Chris Vivlamore PHOENIX — And then there were two. Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer is one of them. With the Cavaliers firing head coach David Blatt on Friday, two of the NBA’s final four coaches from last year have been let go this season. The Rockets fired Kevin McHale earlier this season. That leaves the Warriors’ Steve Kerr and Budenholzer from the coaches who led their teams in the conference finals. Kerr joked on Friday that perhaps he and Budenholzer should be worried. For the record, Budenholzer is not concerned. “It’s just hard in our league to see somebody who has had that much sucess, that’s done that well, that’s that well-respected, not just among coaches but the whole basketball world has great respect for David Blatt,” Budenholzer said. “That’s hard anytime you see a coach go when they make a change. Hopefully, he’ll get another opportunity. He deserves another opportunity. He’s a great coach. “I think Steve Kerr had a line the other day that he and I need to be nervous. I don’t think he’s very nervous. … I’m not either.” Blatt’s Cavaliers swept the Budenholzer’s Hawks in the Eastern Conference finals. They went on to lose the NBA Finals to the Warriors. The Cavaliers made the coaching change with a three-game lead in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks are third, behind the Raptors, five and a half games back. . -

Williams did it again Tuesday night, scoring 33 to send the Clippers to their fourth consecutive win, 113-105 over the Memphis Grizzlies. The standout reserve shot 8 of 15 from the fi eld. Raw Deal by Reg P. Wydeven February 6, 2013
Raw Deal By Reg P. Wydeven February 6, 2013 In the fall of 1998, some buddies and I attended the World Wrestling Federation’s ‘Raw is War’ event at Milwaukee’s Bradley Center. The event took place the day after the ‘Judgment Day’ pay-per-view event where chairman Vince McMahon fired the WWF’s biggest star, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. To celebrate, every single wrestler currently under contract with the WWF and several retired stars made their way to the ring as balloons and confetti fell. McMahon gave a speech and toasted the firing of Austin. After the party, we got to see wrestling legends the Road Warriors and my favorite grappler, Mankind, in action. Superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wrestled, followed by the brothers Kane and the Undertaker in a ‘casket match.’ The night ended with recently ousted Steve Austin showing up to kidnap Vince McMahon, causing the chairman to wet his pants. My buddies and I just kept looking at one another in shock, for we couldn’t believe that we got to see literally every wrestler in the WWF, along with some incredible matches between huge stars. The show we saw was worth ten times what we paid for the tickets. But not every spectator is as lucky as we were. Last fall, the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs had a brutal six-game road trip. To rest his aging veterans, coach Gregg Popovich sent star players Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Danny Green home early, so they missed the trip’s finale against the Miami Heat.
