Drought-Tolerant and Native Plants for Goleta and Santa Barbara County’s Mediterranean Climate Drought tolerant plants for the Santa Barbara and Goleta area. In the 1500's California went through an 80 year drought. During the winter there were blizzards in Central California, the Salinas River froze solid where it flowed into the Monterey Bay. During the summer there was no humidity, no rain, and temperatures in the hundreds for many months. During one year in the 1840's there was no measurable rain in Santa Barbara. (The highest measured rainfall in an hour also was in Southern California, 11 inches in an hour) The same native plants that lived through that are still on the hillsides of California. California native plants that do not normally live in the creeks and ponds are very drought tolerant. The best way to find your plant is to check www.mynativeplants.com and do not water at all. Classification of the Vegetation Alliances and Associations of Sonoma County, California Volume 1 of 2 – Introduction, Methods, and Results Prepared by: California Department of Fish and Wildlife Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program California Native Plant Society Vegetation Program For: The Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District The Sonoma County Water Agency Authors: Anne Klein, Todd Keeler-Wolf, and Julie Evens December 2015 ABSTRACT This report describes 118 alliances and 212 associations that are found in Sonoma County, California, comprising the most comprehensive local vegetation classification to date. The vegetation types were defined using a standardized classification approach consistent with the Survey of California Vegetation (SCV) and the United States National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) system. This floristic classification is the basis for an integrated, countywide vegetation map that the Sonoma County Vegetation Mapping and Lidar Program expects to complete in 2017. Ecologists with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the California Native Plant Society analyzed species data from 1149 field surveys collected in Sonoma County between 2001 and 2014. The data include 851 surveys collected in 2013 and 2014 through funding provided specifically for this classification effort. An additional 283 surveys that were conducted in adjacent counties are included in the analysis to provide a broader, regional understanding. A total of 34 tree-overstory, 28 shrubland, and 56 herbaceous alliances are described, with 69 tree-overstory, 51 shrubland, and 92 herbaceous associations. This report is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 (this volume) is composed of the project introduction, methods, and results. It includes a floristic key to all vegetation types, a table showing the full local classification nested within the USNVC hierarchy, and a crosswalk showing the relationship between this and other classification systems. -

March 2008 Draft Vegetation Communities of San Diego County Introduction San Diego’s vegetation communities owe their diversity to the wide range of soil and climatic conditions found in the County. The County encompasses desert, mountainous and coastal conditions over a wide range of elevation, precipitation and temperature changes. These conditions provide niches for endemic species and a wide range of vegetation communities. San Diego County is home to over 200 plant and animal species that are federally listed as rare, endangered, or threatened. The preservation of this diversity of species and habitats is important for the health of ecosystem functions, and their economic and intrinsic values. In order to effectively classify the wide variety of vegetation communities found here, the framework developed by Robert Holland in 1986 has been added to and customized for San Diego County. To supplement the original Holland Code, additions were made by Thomas Oberbauer in 1996 to account for unique habitats found in San Diego and to account for artificial habitat features (i.e., 10,000 series). -

Thorne Plant geographers and floristic taxonomists in recent years have become more insistent that monographers define their categories more accurately than they have in the past. Instead of accepting passively the infraspecific rank, usually variety or subspecies, available in the taxonomic literature, authors of floras are deciding from their own, often considerable knowl edge of the plants involved what the appropriate infraspecific category should be and making needed combinations. Among such recent authors who have thus chosen to make their own combinations are Munz ( 1958, 1974), Keck (1958), Calder and Taylor (1965), Hulten (1967, 1963), and Taylor and MacBryde ( 1978). Understandably they had become impatient with the inability of the botanical taxonomic community to reach general agreement on the definition of taxa. Zoological taxonomists without undue rancor or polemics seem to have rather early achieved general agreement upon the use of subspecies for their geographically significant infraspecific category. The variety ( varietas) through most of early botanical taxonomic history has been the infraspecific term generally used to represent all infraspecific ranks from near-species or major race with great geographic and ecologic significance (subspecies) to minor genetic variants, perhaps in many in stances controlled by a single gene, that occur haphazardly throughout the range of the species (forma). -

Woody Plants at Jasper Ridge, by Toni Corelli An overview of the Jasper Ridge (JR) vegetation communities map (2012) shows a majority of the landscape dominated by woody plant communities including chaparral (Birch leaf mountain mahogany, California sagebrush scrub, Chamise chaparral, Coyote brush scrub, Leather oak chaparral, Poison oak scrub), and woodland (Blue oak woodland, California bucheye groves, Coast live oak woodland, Douglas fir forest, redwood forest, Riparian scrub and forest, Shining willow groves, Valley oak). Our non-woodland communities take up less space on the vegetation map and include the California annual and perennial grassland, and Cattail marsh. The herbaceous plant life forms include annuals, biennials, and herbaceous perennials (non- woody). JR woody plant life forms can be grouped into trees, shrubs, subshrubs, woody vines: • trees have one erect trunk and have a height of 4 meters (~13 feet) or more • shrubs are multistemmed at the base and are mostly shorter than 4 meters • subshrubs are shrub-like, the lower stems are somewhat woody, the upper stems and twigs are less woody; the plant may die back seasonally (e.g. blue witch, golden-yarrow, sticky monkeyflower) • vines are trailing or climbing woody plants (e.g. Clematis spp. and hairy honeysuckle) The total number of vouchered plants classified as woody plants at JR is 126. This represents 16% of the 787 vouchered plants that are listed in the JR vascular plant list. However, the number of vouchered herbaceous plant species, 661, or 84% far outnumbers the woody plant species at JR. As shown in the table the percentages for the Santa Cruz Mts.
