Preface Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I was going to study in Delft. Which study exactly remained unknown until the day before my high school graduation. There I was, reading a flyer about aerospace engineering and suddenly I realized: I was going to study aerospace engineering. During the bachelor it soon became clear that space is the best part of the word aerospace and thus the space flight master was chosen. Looking back this should have been clear already years ago: all those books about space I have read when growing up... After quite some time I have come to the end of my studies. Especially the last years were not an easy journey, but I pulled through and made it to the end. This was not possible without a lot of people and I would like this opportunity to thank them here. First of all, my supervisor Ron Noomen. Thanks for your input and com- ments. But mostly, thank you for your understanding, patience and kind words when I needed them the most. P.de Jong, Delft, November 2018 iii Abstract It is expected that the use of low-thrust propulsion for spacecraft in orbit around Earth will increase in the upcoming years. Compared to conventional chemical propulsion, low-thrust propulsion has a higher energy density per unit of mass, resulting in a significant reduction of propellant mass required for a given velocity increment to be gained. Due to the small acceleration force of low-thrust propulsion and the long travel time, perturbations have a large influence on a low-thrust transfer orbit. Numerical methods are required to ob- tain a feasible and precise solution of a trajectory problem, but these methods can be computationally time consuming. An analytical first-guess approximation, which takes perturbations into account, is thus desired. This can then be used as a base-line for the numerical optimization. The perturbations acting on a spacecraft in an orbit around Earth are currently modelled analytically in the Simplified General Perturbations Model 4 (SGP4) model, which is used to propagate spacecraft forward in time. In this thesis research, the SGP4 method is combined with an existing analytical method for a low-thrust trajectory. This is the solution suggested by Edelbaum and improved by (Kechichian, 1997). This resulted in the SGP4-LT tool. An iterative SGP4 version version was required. In the development of this tool, various modifications had to be made. In order to successfully implement this low-thrust solution, an iterative ver- sion of SGP4 was developed. To convert osculating orbital elements in mean orbital elements, an existing procedure was corrected and improved. Originally, this solution had poor convergence rates, but after the correction and modifications, a convergence rate of 99.5 % was reached for 17542 objects of the satellite cat- alogue. Convergence was not reached in case of combinations for inclinations smaller than 0.05° and eccen- 6 tricities lower than 4 10¡ . It is expected that this is caused by floating-point errors in the conversion process. ¢ It was shown that SGP4-LT combines perturbations and low-thrust acceleration correctly. Due to the per- turbations, the transfer time will increase slightly and the evaluation of the semi-major axis and inclination showed similar behaviour for a pure Edelbaum solution. When looking at the orientation of the orbit, the right ascension of the ascending node changed with a rate as expected by SGP4 at its corresponding altitude. Normally, a time-consuming numerical integration is required to obtain data to plot the trajectory. SGP4-LT requires only 5 seconds to produce the data required to plot trajectories with flight times of 180 days. The versatility of the SGP4-LT tool is shown by applying the tool to three different applications. Orbit rais- ing, non-coplanar orbit changes and altitude maintenance in low Earth orbits were considered. SGP4-LT obtained expected results for the orbit raising and non-coplanar orbit change. The altitude maintenance is based on the GOCE spacecraft, which used an ion engine to fly drag-free in a low Earth orbit. It was found that for the lowest thrust acceleration possible, 27.18 kg xenon propellant was required to maintain the altitude during the mission life time. Using historical TLE GOCE data, this was found to be a reasonable first approx- imation of the propellant mass. Although too low, the values obtained were in the range of the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE)’s thruster and similar results to GOCE’s mission can be obtained when a higher thrust acceleration is used. In conclusion, a correct functioning tool has been developed which obtains a first approximation solution for transfer trajectories performing whilst orbiting around Earth.     Appendix A Orbits As discussed in the Introduction, a good ¯rst approximation for satellite motion is obtained by assuming the spacecraft is a point mass or spherical body moving in the gravitational ¯eld of a spherical planet. This leads to the classical two-body problem. Since we use the term body to refer to a spacecraft of ¯nite size (as in rigid body), it may be more appropriate to call this the two-particle problem, but I will use the term two-body problem in its classical sense. The basic elements of orbital dynamics are captured in Kepler's three laws which he published in the 17th century. His laws were for the orbital motion of the planets about the Sun, but are also applicable to the motion of satellites about planets. The three laws are: 1. The orbit of each planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one focus. 2. The line joining the planet to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal times. 3. The square of the period of a planet is proportional to the cube of its mean distance to the sun. The ¯rst law applies to most spacecraft, but it is also possible for spacecraft to travel in parabolic and hyperbolic orbits, in which case the period is in¯nite and the 3rd law does not apply. However, the 2nd law applies to all two-body motion. Newton's 2nd law and his law of universal gravitation provide the tools for generalizing Kepler's laws to non-elliptical orbits, as well as for proving Kepler's laws.

    Electric propulsion system scaling for asteroid capture-and-return missions Justin M. Little⇤ and Edgar Y. Choueiri† Electric Propulsion and Plasma Dynamics Laboratory, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, 08544 The requirements for an electric propulsion system needed to maximize the return mass of asteroid capture-and-return (ACR) missions are investigated in detail. An analytical model is presented for the mission time and mass balance of an ACR mission based on the propellant requirements of each mission phase. Edelbaum’s approximation is used for the Earth-escape phase. The asteroid rendezvous and return phases of the mission are modeled as a low-thrust optimal control problem with a lunar assist. The numerical solution to this problem is used to derive scaling laws for the propellant requirements based on the maneuver time, asteroid orbit, and propulsion system parameters. Constraining the rendezvous and return phases by the synodic period of the target asteroid, a semi- empirical equation is obtained for the optimum specific impulse and power supply. It was found analytically that the optimum power supply is one such that the mass of the propulsion system and power supply are approximately equal to the total mass of propellant used during the entire mission. Finally, it is shown that ACR missions, in general, are optimized using propulsion systems capable of processing 100 kW – 1 MW of power with specific impulses in the range 5,000 – 10,000 s, and have the potential to return asteroids on the order of 103 104 tons. − Nomenclature

    AAS 09-372 A DESCRIPTION OF FILTERS FOR MINIMIZING THE TIME REQUIRED FOR ORBITAL CONJUNCTION COMPUTATIONS James Woodburn*, Vincent Coppola† and Frank Stoner‡ Classical filters used in the identification of orbital conjunctions are described and examined for potential failure cases. Alternative implementations of the filters are described which maintain the spirit of the original concepts but improve robustness. The computational advantage provided by each filter when applied to the one versus all and the all versus all orbital conjunction problems are presented. All of the classic filters are shown to be applicable to conjunction detection based on tabulated ephemerides in addition to two line element sets. INTRODUCTION The problem of on-orbit collisions or near collisions is receiving increased attention in light of the recent collision between an Iridium satellite and COSMOS 2251. More recently, the crew of the International Space Station was evacuated to the Soyuz module until a chunk of debris had safely passed. Dealing with the reality of an ever more crowded space environment requires the identification of potentially dangerous orbital conjunctions followed by the selection of an appropriate course of action. This text serves to describe the process of identifying all potential orbital conjunctions, or more specifically, the techniques used to allow the computations to be performed reliably and within a reasonable period of time. The identification of potentially dangerous conjunctions is most commonly done by determining periods of time when two objects have an unacceptable risk of collision. For this analysis, we will use the distance between the objects as our proxy for risk of collision.

(If it does not, or you would like to add another satellite later, you can click on the Insert menu at the top and choose New…) The Orbit Wizard is an easy way to add satellites, but we will choose Define Properties instead. We choose Define Properties directly because we want to use a maneuver-based tool called the Astrogator, which will undo any initial orbit set using the Orbit Wizard. Make sure Satellite is selected in the left pane of the Insert window, then choose Define Properties in the right-hand pane and click the Insert…button. 4) The Properties window for the Satellite appears. You can access this window later by right-clicking or double-clicking on the satellite’s name in the Object Browser (the left side of the STK window). When you open the Properties window, it will default to the Basic Orbit screen, which happens to be where we want to be. The Basic Orbit screen allows you to choose what kind of numerical propagator STK should use to move the satellite.

    New Closed-Form Solutions for Optimal Impulsive Control of Spacecraft Relative Motion Michelle Chernick∗ and Simone D'Amicoy Aeronautics and Astronautics, Stanford University, Stanford, California, 94305, USA This paper addresses the fuel-optimal guidance and control of the relative motion for formation-flying and rendezvous using impulsive maneuvers. To meet the requirements of future multi-satellite missions, closed-form solutions of the inverse relative dynamics are sought in arbitrary orbits. Time constraints dictated by mission operations and relevant perturbations acting on the formation are taken into account by splitting the optimal recon- figuration in a guidance (long-term) and control (short-term) layer. Both problems are cast in relative orbit element space which allows the simple inclusion of secular and long-periodic perturbations through a state transition matrix and the translation of the fuel-optimal optimization into a minimum-length path-planning problem. Due to the proper choice of state variables, both guidance and control problems can be solved (semi-)analytically leading to optimal, predictable maneuvering schemes for simple on-board implementation. Besides generalizing previous work, this paper finds four new in-plane and out-of-plane (semi-)analytical solutions to the optimal control problem in the cases of unperturbed ec- centric and perturbed near-circular orbits. A general delta-v lower bound is formulated which provides insight into the optimality of the control solutions, and a strong analogy between elliptic Hohmann transfers and formation-flying control is established. Finally, the functionality, performance, and benefits of the new impulsive maneuvering schemes are rigorously assessed through numerical integration of the equations of motion and a systematic comparison with primer vector optimal control.
