Farmers’ Field Day

Action site: Fergana Valley

Objectives: • Demonstrate the performance of recently released and pipeline varieties of winter wheat to the men and women farmers, seed producers, extension workers, policy makers and researchers. • Jointly evaluate experimental lines and identify superior lines for further evaluation and release consideration. • Observe, discuss and learn from seed production demonstration plots to produce quality seed.

Delivery: (Fergana, Uzbekistan) • Field day was organized in the research, demonstration and seed multiplication plots established under CRP-DS as collaborative activities among ICARDA, research institute, district administration office, and district level department of agriculture in Fergana, Uzbekistan. • The participants were welcome and addressed by Dr. Amir Amanov (Director of Uzbek Research Institute of Plant Industry), Imomaliev Bakhromjon (Head of Agriculture and Water Rsources Department), and Dr. Jozef Turok (ICARDA-CAC Regional Coordinator) • The participants were given information about the adaptive trials, varietal demonstration plots and seed production demonstration plots by national wheat research coordinator of Uzbekistan Dr. Amir Amanov and ICARDA wheat breeder Dr. Ram Sharma. • In the first step all the participants moved together from plot to plot and discussed performance of each variety (Figure 1). • In the second step, the participants individually evaluated relative performance of each variety and experimental line, and recorded their observations • At the end of the half day field visit, the participants individually expressed their comments on best varieties in their evaluation, management of the experiments and demonstration plots, and their need for winter varieties in the following year. • In particular, the farmers were impressed with the new varieties in the demonstration plots. • The most preferred released varieties were “Yaksart”, “Hazrati Bashir” and “Byniodkor” and the most liked candidate cultivar was “Shams”. • The farmers put up urgent request to the Head of the Regional Agricultural Department to make available seeds of their preferred new, yellow rust resistant varieties to replace the currently grown old, yellow rust susceptible varieties.

Delivery: (Khujand, Sugd, ) • Field day was organized in the research, demonstration and seed multiplication plots established under CRP-DS as collaborative activities between ICARDA and Sugd Breanch of the Tajik Farming Institute (TFI). • The participants were welcome by Dr. Saidjamol Saidov (former Director of TFI), head of the district agricultural department, and Dr. Ram Sharma (ICARDA wheat breeder). • The participants were given information about the adaptive trials, varietal demonstration plots and seed production demonstration plots by Dr. Saidov and Dr. Sharma. • In the first step all the participants moved together from plot to plot and discussed performance of each variety (Figure 2). • In the second step, the participants individually evaluated relative performance of each variety and experimental line, and recorded their observations. • At the end of the half day field visit, the participants individually expressed their comments on best varieties in their evaluation, management of the experiments and demonstration plots, and their need for improved varieties of winter wheat, barley and chickpea for the next crop season. • The most preferred released variety was “Alex” and the most liked experimental variety was “KR12-10”. • The participants also observed and evaluated chickpea and barley demonstration and seed multiplication plots.

• Farmers Day was conducted in Kuva district Fergana Province on 9 September 2014 with the active support of local government (Khokimiyat) and district’s Water Users Association. • Total 130 farmers participated on this event, including 118 women and 12 men. • A demonstrational field was initiated in “Akmal Matmusaev” farm on a total area 0.6 ha. The following new varieties were cultivated: mungbean (Durdona, Zilola, Marjon and Turom), vegetable soybean (Sulton and Universal) and yard-long bean (Oltin soch). New varieties cultivation technology and its’ characteristics were explained to participants. During discussion farmers expressed a very big interest and whishes to grow these varieties in a future.

Outputs:

(i) Three farmers’ field day organized to demonstrate performance of winter wheat and mungbean, and observe quality seed production of wheat, barley, chickpea, and mungbean. Outcomes:

(i) Fifty four participant farmers, researchers, extension workers and policy makers learned about new varieties and pipeline materials of winter wheat, barley and chickpea and seed multiplication plots. (ii) One hundred thirty participant farmers, researchers, extension workers and policy makers learned about new varieties mungbean (Figure 5) and wheat-mungbean crop rotation.
