Call for Papers

Jacques Derrida: Democracy to Come

This special issue of Symposium will honor the life and work of Jacques Derrida by focusing on the concept of "democracy to come," elaborated in recent texts as an (a)temporal coming of an unforeseeable other or event beyond calculation. With this com pelling formulation Derrida invites us to rethink democracy in light of current global politics. How can we speak about democracy? He asks in Rogues. Is it possible to speak against democracy? What happens to democracy when freedom is no longer determined as power or the ability to do as one pleases? How do we negotiate the two incompatible desires of democracy: to welcome only the "citizens, brothers and compeers," excluding the "bad citizens, rogues, and noncitizens," yet to offer hospitality to all those ex cluded?

We invite submissions in English or French devoted to any of these or other questions relating to the theme of democracy to come. The issue will be published as Volume 10, No. 1, Spring 2007. Please submit two hard copies or an electronic copy of your paper along with a disk by August 15, 2006 to the following address (notifications of acceptance will be sent after the dead line):
