  • Caribbean Pirates and the Representation of Colonialism
Abstract Tales of piracy are influenced by popular media that romanticize it. For instance, Treasure Island and Pirates of the Caribbean created a romantic pirate image, with specific pirate tropes that now everyone is familiar with. This romantic pirate image is based upon Caribbean pirates from the Golden Age of Piracy. A current game, namely; Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (Ubisoft Montreal, 2013), that is settled within this Golden Age of Piracy in the colonial Caribbean around 1715 also deals with the romanticization of piracy. This is because consumers have certain expectations when it comes to pirates. This period of time being dominated by colonialism causes that the representation of piracy in popular media is tied up with the representation of colonialism, and consequently the subaltern. A romantic representation of Caribbean pirates could therefore be problematic for their representation. For this reason, this research adds to the existing debate surrounding postcolonialism and game studies by focusing on how/whether romanticization affects the representation of colonialism, and consequently the subaltern. The research uses a plurality of play, because play explains whether the subaltern is controlled or been given agency, and because playing in a different way than following the game allows for new insights. Hereby have implied play and exploratory play been used to investigate how piracy is represented while playing according to the rules. Transgressive play is further used in order to investigate what the boundaries of the representation of piracy are, and what the role of the player is. All of this has then been placed in relation to the romantic pirate genre, and representation of the subaltern.

Constructing the Identity of the Popular Pirate The Outlaw, Marginal Identities, and Utopia in Black Sails (2014-2017) and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013) Susanne J. Dirksen Student number: 3997448 MA Thesis, Cultural History of Modern Europe Utrecht University Supervisor: dr. Jeroen Koch Date of submission: August 5, 2019 Word count: 16.533 Abstract This thesis investigates how the Golden Age of piracy and the identity of pirates is reconstructed in the recent popular television series Black Sails, and the videogame Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. By building upon recent literature on the connection between pirates in popular culture and history, it asks: How is the identity of the popular pirate constructed in the recent television series Black Sails (2014-2017) and the videogame Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013)? In order to answer this question, this thesis is divided into three chapters which elaborate on the following three themes: outlaw identity, gender and ethnicity, and utopia. Each theme will be discussed in relation to pirates in popular representations by providing a discussion of (recent) literature, and a subsequent application of the discussed ideas on both Black Sails and Assassin’s Creed IV by elaborating on a few key moments. Discussing the way pirates are represented in popular media grants insights into the way the past is invented on screen, how pirates are idealized, and how videogame- and filmmakers alike create and maintain a sense of believability in stories which mix (historical) fact with fiction. As the appeal of the outlaw and the pirate outlaw is widespread, they have been interpreted in countless (fictional) stories, and this, in turn, has created a persistent image of a mythical pirate, which is even further articulated because of the fact that so little is known about the historical pirates of the Golden Age.

  • Stay Your Blade
Article Stay Your Blade Connie Veugen Faculty of Humanities, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, De Boelelaan 1105, 1081 HV Amsterdam, The Netherlands; jil.veugen@vu.nl Received: 14 June 2018; Accepted: 28 June 2018; Published: 3 July 2018 Abstract: In their article ‘Transmedial worlds: Rethinking cyberworld design’, Klastrup and Tosca show that the core elements of a Transmedial World are: Mythos, the lore of the world, the central knowledge necessary to interpret and successfully interact with events in the world; Topos, the setting and detailed geography of the world; and Ethos, the explicit and implicit ethics and (moral) codex of behaviour. Though other terms are used, in essence similar distinctions are made in game worlds and storyworlds. In this article, I will first discuss the game world and the storyworld and show that the storyworld in games is different from that in non-interactive narrative media. I then focus on the Mythos and Ethos elements in the world of the Assassin’s Creed series as both govern the moral choices in the series and, by doing so, subtly direct the behaviour of the player. Keywords: transmediality; transmedia storytelling; game worlds; storyworlds; transmedial worlds; Mythos; Ethos; Assassin’s Creed 1. Introduction In 2003, Henry Jenkins wrote “A good character can sustain multiple narratives and thus lead to a successful movie franchise. A good ‘world’ can sustain multiple characters (and their stories) and thus successfully launch a transmedia franchise” (Jenkins 2003, §13). Jenkins’ observation was made in the context of convergence culture and transmedia storytelling. However, storyworlds are also an important part of games, especially MMORPG’s (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games), such as World of Warcraft.

  • Gaming the Golden Age of Piracy
Gaming the Golden Age of Piracy SETH RUDY Introduction IN ITS annual earnings report for 2014, the French multinational video game developer and publisher Ubisoft announced that it had shipped more than 11 million copies of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (7). Set roughly between the end of the War of the Spanish Succession in 1713 and the death of Bartholomew Roberts in 1722, the best-selling ACIV is the second of four major installments in the franchise set in the 1700s: the events of Assassin’s Creed III, released in 2012, take place during the American War of Independence, while Assassin’s Creed: Rogue and Assassin’s Creed: Unity (both 2014), take place during the Seven Years’ War and the French Revolution, respectively. Downloadable content and spinoff games expand the series’ coverage to the mid-1730s (Freedom Cry), the decade following the French and Indian War (Liberation), and an alternate history of the 1780s in which George Washington is crowned king of a new American monarchy (The Tyranny of King Washington). Together, these games have provided hundreds of hours of immersive play to tens of millions of people across the planet.1 With respect to the computer and video game segments of the popular entertainment market, Ubisoft all but owns the eighteenth century. The entire series’ engagement with history necessarily resonates in the modern world. As Ian Bogost suggests, the very nature of game is such that the world of the player is not separate or separable from that of the simulation. Rather than the artificial and self-contained spaces described by play theorist Johan Huizinga as “magic circles,” Bogost explains, games create “a two-way street through which players and their ideas can enter and exit the game, taking and leaving their residue in both directions.”2 This “gap” in the magic circle allows for the ideas created within and conveyed by both worlds to interact with and inform each other (135).

Article ‘Requiescat in Pace’. Initiation and Assassination Rituals in the Assassin’s Creed Game Series F. (Frank) G. Bosman Department of Systematic Theology and Philosophy, Tilburg University, 5037AB Tilburg, The Netherlands; F.G.Bosman@uvt.nl Received: 16 April 2018; Accepted: 18 May 2018; Published: 21 May 2018 Abstract: The Assassin’s Creed game series (Ubisoft 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013a, 2013b, 2014, 2015, 2017) revolves around an alternative interpretation of human history as an ongoing battle between two rival factions: the Assassin Brotherhood (modelled on the historical Nizar Isma’ilis) and the Templar Order (inspired by the historical Order of the Knights Templar). Both factions compete over the possession of mythical artefacts, called the ‘Apples of Eden’, which once belonged to a now extinct proto-human race. The possession of these artefacts gives the owner incredible knowledge and the ability to manipulate large numbers of people. The Templars strive for world domination, while the Assassins want to prevent this; their aim is to develop human consciousness and individual freedom. Considering games as ‘playable texts’, I make an inventory of three in- game rituals, two of the Assassin Brotherhood and one of the Templar Order. Both initiation and assassination rituals are quite elaborate given the context of the games in which they are displayed. Progression and regression can be observed in terms of ritual practices within the primary series of the game series, which stretches from ancient Egypt to modernity. This article describes the three ritual practices mentioned within the Assassin’s Creed series, and links them to the larger metanarrative of the series.
