Breeders' Cup Flash Notes Breeders’ Cup World Championships Odds & Ends Sunday, November 2, 2014 Contact Notes Team (626) 254-1352 Smith Extends Lead in Breeders’ Cup Victories Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, 49, extended his lead for Breeders’ Cup victories with one win to bring his total to 21. His victory came in the DraftKings Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint with Judy the Beauty. Three jockeys won their first Breeders’ Cup races with Stephane Pasquier capturing the Breeders’ Cup Mile aboard Karakontie, Florent Geroux scoring with Work All Week in the Xpressbet Breeders’ Cup Sprint and Irad Ortiz Jr. taking the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf with Lady Eli. Pasquier and Geroux won with their first mounts. Four Trainers Get First Breeders’ Cup Wins Four winners of the 13 Breeders’ Cup races over the weekend were greeted by trainers winning their first Championships test, two of them with their first starter. Winning with their first starters were Roger Brueggemann (Work All Week – Xpressbet Breeders’ Cup Sprint) and Leandro Mora (Goldencents – Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile). Other first-time winners in 2014 were Keith Desormeaux (Texas Red – Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile) and Wesley Ward, who won twice with Judy the Beauty (Filly & Mare Sprint) and Hootenanny (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf). The leader board for victories among trainers underwent only minor changes with only D. Wayne Lukas and Bob Baffert adding to their totals. Lukas earned his record 21st Championship win with Take Charge Brandi in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies while Baffert picked up his 11th tally with Bayern in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Breeders’ Cup Repeat Winners W.C. Racing’s 4yo Goldencents went into the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Championships as one of five previous winners of a Breeders’ Cup race to compete and emerged as the lone winner when he went wire-to-wire to win the Dirt Mile Friday under regular jockey Rafael Bejarano. The son of Into Mischief scored by 1¾ lengths to give trainer Leandro Moro his first Breeders’ Cup winner after serving as assistant to Doug O’Neill when the colt scored last year over the same Santa Anita track and distance. Also Friday, Christopher Dunn and partners’ 3yo filly Ria Antonio, winner of the Juvenile Fillies last year (on disqualification of She’s a Tiger), stepped up to the Longines Distaff and finished a respectable fourth behind favorite Untapable. -MORE- 2-2-2-2 Mike Pegram and partners’ 5yo Secret Circle finished second to longshot Work All Week Saturday after capturing that race last year for trainer Bob Baffert. The son of Eddington also won the 2011 edition of the short-lived Juvenile Sprint at Churchill Downs. Two former Breeders’ Cup winners went to the post for the Filly & Mare Turf. James Wigan’s 5yo mare Dank won the race here last year for trainer Sir Michael Stoute and ran well to finish third Saturday behind Dayatthespa. Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s 5yo mare Stephanie’s Kitten won the 2011 edition of the Juvenile Fillies when trained Wayne Catalano and finished a game second Saturday to give trainer Chad Brown a one-two sweep. A possible sixth returning champion was Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith’s 4yo Magician, who was set to defend his title in the Longines Turf for trainer Aidan O’Brien, but was forced to miss his chance after being withdrawn early last week because of lameness. The son of Galileo will now take up stud duty at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Lexington, Ky. Breeders’ Cup Stars from Coast-to-Coast and World Wide The 13 Breeders’ Cup World Championships winners Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita converged from major racing centers from coast-to-coast and Europe. The three resident California trainee winners were led by Classic hero Bayern, preceded by Goldenscents in theDirt Mile Friday and Texas Red earlier Saturday in the Sentient Jet Juvenile. Five winners trained and/or raced in New York for the most part, led by trainer Chad Brown’s triple tally with Lady Eli (Juvenile Fillies Turf), Dayatthespa (Filly & Mare Turf) and Bobby’s Kitten (Turf Sprint). Trainer Graham Motion sent out 5yo gelding Main Sequence to post his fourth straight Grade 1 score, one at Monmouth Park and two in New York, while based at Fair Hill training center in northern Maryland. The outstanding 3yo filly Untapable began her campaign with two victories at Fair Grounds in New Orleans before capturing the Kentucky Oaks for trainer Steve Asmussen and spent the late spring and summer training at Saratoga. She shipped to Santa Anita early after victory in the Cotillion Stakes at Parx on Sept. 20. Trainer Wesley Ward’s two winners (Hootenanny (Juvenile Turf) and Judy the Beauty (Filly & Mare Sprint) spent the bulk of the season at Keeneland in Kentucky while D. Wayne Lukas had Take Charge Brandi (Juvenile Fillies) at Churchill Downs with the exception of some time at Saratoga during the summer. Sprint winner Work All Week was based at Arlington International Racecourse. The European team near 30-strong had another successful foray to Santa Anita with French- trained Karakontie, the first Japanese-bred to win a Breeders’ Cup race, leading a one-two-three finish in the Mile and a solid showing by England’s Toast of New York as runner-up in the Classic behind Bayern for trainer Jamie Osborne and Flintshire second in the Turf for French legend Andre Fabre. -MORE- 3-3-3-3 More Breeders’ Cup World Championships Odds and Ends Four post-time favorites won Breeders’ Cup races this year. The winning favorites were Judy the Beauty (Filly & Mare Sprint); Untapable (Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff); Lady Eli (Juvenile Fillies Turf); and Goldencents (Dirt Mile). The highest priced winner this year was Take Charge Brandi (61.70-1) in the Juvenile Fillies. Funny Cide’s Epic Kentucky Derby Victory is Ten Years Old By Bill Heller Can it be ten years since a three-year-old gelding named Funny Cide, and a yellow school bus carrying a group of high school friends who owned him, rearranged the racing industry’s position on New York- breds? “I don’t believe it,” his retired Hall of Fame jockey Jose Santos said Tuesday. “It went by too fast.” Funny Cide’s trainer, Barclay Tagg, agreed: “I do have trouble believing that.” Asked what’s the first thing that comes to his mind when someone asks him about Funny Cide, Jose said, “That he was the best three-year-old in my racing career.” These days, Jose has a new career running a feed company, Instride International, which began operating in 2012 and now serves three Florida tracks: Calder, Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows. “Basically, I’m running the whole thing,” Jose said. “I’ve been selling to the trainers. They are friends of mine.” His client list includes a bunch of New York trainers who winter in Florida, including Todd Pletcher, John Kimmel, Linda Rice, Rick Violette and John Terranova. Funny Cide, a son of Distorted Humor out of Belle’s Good Cide by Slewacide, was bred by WinStar Farm and foaled at Joe and Anne McMahon’s Thoroughbred farm just outside Saratoga Springs. He was originally purchased for $22,000 before Tagg bought him for $75,000 for Sackatoga Stable, an entity formed when several old friends got together for a Memorial Day barbecue in their home town of Sackets Harbor.

  • Scat Daddy Stars at Craven Cont
THURSDAY, 19 APRIL, 2018 and the second time I loved him. He is still developing all the SCAT DADDY STARS time and he looks ready to go. This is probably the last sale where you can get them to [Royal] Ascot so I don't think he'll be AT CRAVEN waiting around too long." Hillen was acting for an existing client, who wished to remain anonymous, but was able to confirm that the colt will be staying in Britain. "Scat Daddy has obviously been a great sire and I think nearly all his that breezed last year have won," Hillen added. "I bought one for 60 grand tonight and one for 900, so that's two ends of the spectrum." Even Scat Daddy, then, is not immune to the feast-or-famine flavour of the sector this spring. "It's polarised," confirmed Hillen. "There have been horses going through today I bought on spec, just because they were too cheap. I had a longer list today, I thought they were better horses, but it's a buyers' market. It is easier to get 300 grand than it is to get 75Cwhen there's not the gulf in class. It's all or nothing." cont. p2 The 900,000gns sale-topping son of Scat Daddy | Tattersalls IN TDN AMERICA TODAY TDN Q & A: OGDEN PHIPPS II By Chris McGrath The TDN speaks with Ogden Phipps II on his recent NEWMARKET, UK--The sickle moon hanging over the appointment to the NYRA board and his family’s stable. • Tough Road Ahead= for Post-Brexit Horse Transport
SUNDAY, 17 JANUARY 2021 >TOUGH ROAD AHEAD= ABDULLAH=S FAMILY AVERY COMMITTED@ TO JUDDMONTE FOR POST-BREXIT HORSE It will be business at usual at Juddmonte Farms after Juddmonte Group Chief Executive Douglas Erskine Crum told ITV TRANSPORT on Saturday that there will be Ano change@ following the death of the global operation=s founder Prince Khalid Abdullah last week. Abdullah had raced 118 Group or Grade I winners since entering the game just over 40 years ago, of which he bred 102 of those. He owned stud farms in the UK, Ireland and Kentucky. AThe family has been for some time and still is very committed to keeping Juddmonte as it is going, focusing on the broodmare band, focusing on the homebred operation,@ Erskine Crum told ITV Racing. AOne of the last decisions in which the prince was involved was the matings for this year, in other words where his 200-odd broodmares are going to go. Whether they are going to go to Frankel, Kingman or some of the great stallions across the world. Cont. p5 Horse transport between Britain and the EU has become much more complicated | Getty Images By Emma Berry While Britain, Ireland and France are competing nations in the racing and breeding world, in recent years the Tripartite Agreement (TPA) has significantly eased the regular interaction between the three, particularly in regard to transporting broodmares and racehorses. The TPA recognised the high health status of Thoroughbreds and allowed for free equine movement between the countries. All that changed, however, when Britain=s departure from the European Union was finalised with the end of the transition period on Dec.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2020 KNICKS GO ADDS DASH TO A NEW HEIR TO WAR FRONT=S THRONE AT CLAIBORNE PAYNTER'S PALETTE by Katie Ritz War Front is undoubtedly heralded as one of America=s top turf sires, but Claiborne=s Bernie Sams said he finds any stereotype that the stallion is solely a grass producer unjustifiable. AI think War Front has been labeled to some extent as a turf sire, but unfairly so because he got his start with dirt stakes winners,@ he said.
