FUTURITY A WORK OF ART FOR KLIMT GETS Kaleem Shah=s Klimt (Quality Road) sailed home an easy LAST LAUGH IN HOPEFUL 4 1/4-length winner of Monday=s GI , a race won the last two seasons by subsequent GI winners () and Nyquist (Uncle Mo). Breaking from the outside in a field of six, Klimt was within striking distance in fourth down the backstretch as favored and fellow >TDN Rising Star= Straight Fire (Dominus) took the field through a quarter in :22.33. The favorite was pressed through a half-mile in :44.38 and looked well in control, but Klimt was gobbling up ground and drew on even terms with the pacesetter at the top of the lane. He turned back the favorite with a furlong to run and drew clear effortlessly. AComing to the top of the stretch, I knew he was loaded and I said, >I just hope that other horse [Straight Fire] doesn=t have another gear,=@ said trainer Bob Baffert, who was winning his 13th Futurity. AIt was very exciting to watch.@ Cont. p5 Practical Joke | Sarah K Andrew Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence=s Practical Joke (Into IN TDN EUROPE TODAY Mischief) provided a fitting close-day exclamation point on a IDAHO CONFIRMED FOR LEGER; NAVAN OUT Saratoga meeting dominated by trainer Chad Brown and jockey Idaho (Ire) ( {Ire}) heads 15 remaining in Saturday’s G1 Jose Ortiz with his late-running victory in Monday=s GI Hopeful S. Bitumen (Mineshaft) began to move outside him at the three-eighths pole, but dropped away suddenly after that, allowing Practical Joke to swing out smoothly three wide at the top of the lane. Closing strongly outside of emboldened pace players Royal Copy (Bodemeister) and Pretty Boy Flash (Gone Astray), Practical Joke just got up in the nick of time to nail the former by a neck. AJose gave him an unbelievable ride and he looked like he was extending away in the stretch so I don't think any added distance will be an issue,@ said Brown, who extended his Saratoga record to 40 wins at the meet with the victory. AIt's been a pleasure to train for these guys Seth Klarman [of Klaravich Stables] and William Lawrence. Next out, we'll probably point to the [Oct. 8 GI] Champagne.@

A narrowly beaten second behind the reopposing Takeover Target (Harlan=s Holiday) while suffering a wide trip in his first start in over a year in the May 21 GII Dixie S., Ring Weekend raced keenly after getting pinched back at the break and checked in sixth in the Fourstardave. Favored to make amends Monday, Ring Weekend sat just off the pacesetters while saving ground along the hedge behind fractions of :23.26 and :46.59. He tipped out a path in upper stretch, reeled in pacesetting Take the Stand and outbattled Jay Gatsby, who was trying to desperately rally between those two foes in the dying strides. Connections had to then sweat out an inquiry into the tight finish, but jockey John Velazquez was always confident the victory was secure. AI was pretty certain when the horse [Jay Gatsby] got between us, I went to lean a little bit, but I saw the horse on the inside start coming out with him at the same time,@ Velazquez explained. AYou can see how far out we came from the rail because the horse on the inside was coming out, so I was not concerned about the inquiry.@ Terry Finley of co-owner West Point Thoroughbreds, admitted he was confident Ring Weekend would return with a good effort Monday. AThe day after the Fourstardave, Graham [Motion] said, >I think we=ve got a shot to run him back at the end of meet= and it kind of took me back a little bit,@ said Finley. AAll week long, he=s trained great and I had a great feeling. I don=t ususally tell everybody, but I told everybody I thought he would be very tough today. I had no reservations about bringing him back because Graham=s got a really good sense of this horse and he really loves this horse. All those things put together, we had a lot of confidence in putting everything together towards this outlook and we have great partners.@

Pedigree Notes: Ring Weekend=s victory gave leading sire Tapit his second graded victory of the afternoon after Scuba=s win in the GIII Greenwood Cup S. Tapit also had a pair of dead-heat winners in the GI Spinaway S. in Sweet Loretta and Pretty City Dancer at Saratoga Saturday. Multiple stakes placed Free the Magic produced a full-sister to Ring Weekend in 2015 who is catalogued as hip 839 at the upcoming Keeneland September sale. The mare was bred back to the Gainesway stallion this year. Her Danish-bred dam Pompoes (Den) (Belmont), a French Group 1-placed juvenile, is also the dam of MGSP Three Generations () and GSW Forest Wind (Green Forest).

One day after Moves Like Ali won a MSW at Saratoga becoming the seventh first out winner and 11th individual maiden winner for Maclean’s Music, Made Me Shiver ran to her odds in the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth prevailing by a length and a quarter at the wire for an easy victory. Now two wins in three starts, the talented juvenile filly is being pointed for the Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont.

Maclean’s Music has sired winners at Saratoga, Santa Anita, Monmouth, and .

CAVORTING PART OF A TREND In a bid to put what follows into perspective, the world-famous Galileo--Danehill nick is currently credited with an impressive 17% black-type winners, with 76% starters and 56% winners. And Galileo=s flourishing partnership with Danehill Dancer mares is challenging the status quo, with 16% black-type winners. But even these celebrated nicks are currently being overshadowed by Bernardini=s achievements with daughters of Carson City. Twelve of Carson City=s daughters have produced 16 foals of racing age to 2006=s champion 3-year-old colt. Thirteen have started (81%), 11 have won (69%) and five of them have become black-type winners--a terrific 31%. Those five Cavorting | Sarah K Andrew black-type winners would be impressive enough is they were merely listed winners, but they are not. Two of them--the recent GI Personal Ensign S. winner Cavorting and the Frizette S. winner A. Z. Warrior--have scored at Grade I level. Another of the five--Wilburn--won the GII Indiana Derby, while Gala Award landed the GIII Palm Beach S. on turf. The quintet is completed by the graded-placed La Appassionata. This achievement is made all the more meritorious by the fact that each of the four graded winners is out of a different mare. Bearing in mind that Bernardini=s fee has never been lower than $60,000 and has often been in six figures, it is fair to assume that these particular Carson City mares ranked among the former Overbrook stallion=s high achievers. Sure enough, Wilburn=s dam Moonlight Sonata was a Grade III winner, in addition to being a half-sister to the Grade I-winning Bevo; A. Z. Warrior=s dam Carson Jen was stakes placed; and, although Gala Award=s dam Wilshewed failed to win, her dam So Cosy produced four black-type winners. Arguably best of the four, though, was Cavorting=s dam Promenade Girl, who retired with earnings in excess of $670,000. Her most important success came in the GII Molly Pitcher S. over 1 1/16 miles, after which she was third in a couple of Grade Is, including the Juddmonte Spinster S. Cont. p13

Her credentials were good enough for her to fetch $1.125 million at the end of her racing career. It is hard to believe now that her price fell to $335,000 when she reappeared at Keeneland five years later, in foal to none other than War Front. The War Front filly she was carrying recouped most of that price, selling for $290,000 and Promenade Girl=s next foal, a colt by Bernardini=s son Stay Thirsty, added another $240,000 to the bankroll when he was sold as a weanling.
